I overheard the truth
Larisa’s pov
Despite my lingering anger towards my mother, I couldn't resist the invitation from Taylor's mother to visit their home. Eagerly, I prepared myself and made my way to their house, leaving Taylor with all his troubles. Taylor's mother greeted me with genuine delight, and as we sat down for dinner, an unexpected visitor interrupted our meal with persistent knocks on the front door.
"I'll get it!" I said, rising from my seat, while Justin and Sadie turned their attention and followed me. Opening the door, I was met by the sight of a tall, striking young woman. Our eyes met, and it was evident that we were strangers to each other.
"Please come in," I shrugged, gesturing towards the dining table.
"Who is that?" Sadie inquired, noticing the fleeting exchange between us.
"Good evening, Mrs. Sadie," the newcomer greeted as she entered, her presence now visible to both Justin and Sadie.
"Tessy!" Justin exclaimed. "You came?" he said, while I secured the door. By this time, Tessy had approached the dining table, and I followed suit.
"Please, have a seat," Sadie offered, her gaze shifting between Tessy and me. Before Tessy took her place, she leaned in and asked in a hushed tone,
"Where is Dylan?"
"I believe you came because of him," Sadie responded, and they all smiled, except for me. I attentively listened to their conversation as we continued our meal.
"You should have come earlier. He left a few days ago. Something urgent came up," Sadie replied.
"Oh! I'm sorry, I haven't introduced you both," Sadie interjected, shifting her gaze between Tessy and me. "Tessy, meet Larisa, Taylor's girlfriend. Larisa, meet Tessy, Dylan's girlfriend."
I couldn't help but notice a brief pause before Sadie mentioned that Tessy was Dylan's girlfriend. Nevertheless, it was of no concern to me. I had no involvement with Dylan. Tessy joined us at the table, and we all dined together, though I finished my meal first. Just as I was nearing the end of my dinner, my phone began to ring. Justin was the first to notice the ringing tone.
"Your phone is ringing," he informed me. I excused myself and headed upstairs, overhearing Tessy's remark as I made my way to my room.
"Isn't this the lady pregnant with Taylor's child?" I caught a snippet of her conversation. Entering my room, I discovered it was Taylor who had called, and the call had ended. I felt no inclination to return the call or rejoin the dining table when my phone rang once more.
"Hello, Taylor!"
"My dearest, how was your day?" Taylor asked.
"Didn’t you see Bridget’s phone number to call?"
"Could you please sound reasonable for once? Let your response bring me joy. How is the baby doing?"
"Your baby is doing well." I decided to inject more cheerfulness into my voice.
"Thank you so much. You have no idea how my heart leaps when you change the tone of your voice. Remember, I'll be coming tomorrow to pick you up."
"Hmmm..Yes, I'm aware!"
"Thank you so much. I love you."
"I don’t love you," I replied, and silence fell between us. I chose not to say anything more. As usual, he assumed I had ended the call, but this time, I let it linger. I waited for him to end it, but he mistakenly believed I had already hung up, and I overheard a snippet in the background...
"Gabriel, I'm so happy. If your girlfriend hadn't told you that Larisa is pregnant, I would have never known. If anything happens to my baby, I will hold Larisa responsible for murder…"
*************************
Taylor's words to Gabriel held the utmost significance in my current life situation. Overwhelmed by emotions, I collapsed onto the bed, tears streaming down my face. A wave of emotional healing washed over me, causing the intense hatred I harbored for Dylan to instantly dissipate. Simultaneously, I felt remorseful for all the hurtful things I had said to Dylan. I hadn't allowed him any room for trust, convincing myself that he was the worst person I had ever encountered. How would I face him now? I couldn't even trust my own heart, which trembled with fear whenever Dylan looked into my eyes while speaking. Though I could sense fragments of truth, anger still overshadowed everything.
However, silently crying on my bed wouldn't resolve the underlying issue. I needed to reach out to Dylan and I blocked his phone number. I wiped away my tears and unblocked his number before dialing Dylan's phone number. As it rang, a tingling sensation coursed through my fingertips. Someone I had once loved had transformed into someone who emotionally drained me. The phone continued to ring, but he didn't answer. I called Dylan's number three times, and each time he declined to pick up. He was right not to answer; he may have believed that I intended to accuse him over the phone, even after he had left. So, I unlocked my phone and composed the following message:
"Hi Dylan, I'm sincerely sorry for how I treated you. I wrongly accused you of something you didn't do, and that was unfair considering how much I loved you. I didn't think things through before pointing fingers at you. Instead of silencing any part of me that wanted to believe in you, I should have trusted you. The doctor who examined my tests informed Taylor about it. Taylor is Gabriel's girlfriend, who happens to be Taylor's closest friend. Is there any way you can find it in your heart to forgive me for everything I've said and done? I love you, and even during those accusations, my heart was pounding, filled with fear of losing you. All I want to convey is my apology. Please, answer my call."
I sent the message to Dylan and waited anxiously to see if he would call me back. While waiting, I heard a knock on my door, and upon opening it, I found Sadie standing there.
"I hope you're doing okay? You left and didn't return," she said.
"Oh, yes. Taylor called, and I also have a slight headache, so I decided to lie down for a while."
"Okay," she replied. Just as she was about to leave, she added, "I almost forgot, Tessy is about to leave, and I thought you might want to say hello to her. It's beneficial for both of you to get to know each other. Your good communication will contribute to the peace and unity of the family. I'm sharing this with you because you're now part of this family, and your child will be our first grandchild. If you and Dylan's girlfriend can establish a connection, it will foster a special bond. I want Dylan and Taylor to be close, and if that can happen through you and Tessy, it will bring us joy. Would you like to meet Tessy before she leaves?" Sadie asked. At that moment, I gently touched my belly, knowing that anything I reveal about my pregnancy will be received with care.
"I would love to, but I'm feeling some itching in my belly..."
"Oh sorry," she said, gripping my hand gently. "You need to rest."
"Yes," I grimaced, forcing empathy upon myself. Dylan's mother carefully supported me around the waist and guided me to the bed, where I lay down with care. She lovingly kissed my forehead and as she moved away, Dylan's call came through. Swiftly, I turned my phone face-down on the bed, ensuring she couldn't see who was calling. Waiting until I was certain she had gone downstairs, I judged the distance by the sound of her footsteps. By then, Dylan's call had ended. Without delay, I dialed his number and we both remained silent, waiting for one another to initiate the conversation.
"I saw your message," he said, breaking the silence. When I stayed quiet, he continued, "How is your baby doing?"
"My baby is doing well," I replied softly. "I'm truly sorry..." I added.
"Don't worry, I read your explanation. I was concerned about how you were yelling at me and wondered if it would impact your health and the baby's."
"Does that mean you've forgiven me?" I asked, filled with hope.
"Love can forgive many mistakes. It was just a misunderstanding. Your reaction stemmed from the fact that I was the only person you had confided in about the pregnancy. It was an impulsive response. So, there's something you'll have to make it up to me for, something very special to me."
"What is it?" I began laughing.
"You know what it is."
"I can't wait for you to hold me close," I said.
"Who said anything about your body?" he playfully asked.
"If you're not referring to my body, then you'll have to do me a favor," I said.
"What favor?"
"My back is sore. I need a warm bath..." and we both burst into laughter.
"I miss you so much, Larisa. I wish I could have kissed you that morning when you were so angry."
"Why didn't you kiss me?" I asked, moving my upper body as if he were about to kiss me right then. "I'm so bored lying in this bed. What are you up to before you come and whisk me away?" I added.
"But you're far away. Can you defy the odds and come to NewYork by tomorrow? I'll be ready to meet you at the airport, just like how you welcomed me when I arrived," he said.
"That would be the best thing, to hold your hands and have you embrace me. I'm ready to do that for you. Although, Taylor is coming tomorrow to take me to his house. But before he comes, I want to be in your arms. Whenever I hear your voice, I feel like shedding all my clothes. What have you done to me? You always overpower me, and I want to be by your side for the rest of my life.”
This was one of the liveliest nights since I met Dylan. We conversed as usual and talked late into the night. The following morning, before leaving my room, I called my mum. After exchanging greetings, I said,
"Mum, I'm heading to New York today for a job interview. I'm not sure how long I'll be there. My phone might not work properly, but I wanted to let you know."
"Are you really going for a job interview, or are you going to meet Dylan? I overheard both of you when he came to my house. I hope it's not what I am thinking?" she asked.
"How could I be pregnant with Taylor's child and go to see Dylan? Please, I don't want you to mention that name again. I'm going for a job interview." And my heart raced after the call. It means my mum lied to me and said she only heard the word ‘swearing..’
I took a shower that morning and couldn't help but smile. Joy radiated from me, noticed by Sadie and Justin as we prepared to have breakfast.
"I can't wait to attend your wedding with my son. I can see that you're brimming with joy because Taylor is calling today," Sadie remarked, and all I could do was smile and quickly finish my food. Ten minutes later, while Sadie and Justin were still in the living room, I stepped out of my room wearing a short red dress and a black bag, saying,
"Let me quickly grab a few things from a nearby grocery store. I'll be back soon," I told Sadie. But miles away, the love of my life was waiting for me. The first thing I would ask him to do is to bathe me with warm water.
