Chapter 297 Ashley Belongs to Me
It had been a minute since Ashley last saw Sean. She nodded and smiled, "Are you in court today too?"
Sean gave a slight nod, "Just wrapped up, waiting on the verdict. What about you?"
With perfect manners and no extra fuss, Ashley made everyone feel at ease.
Half-joking and a bit frustrated, Ashley said, "Brown and I are up against each other today. He's a tough nut to crack. The case is still stuck and will be retried next week."
Sean listened closely, nodded, and then glanced at Brown, "You're a top-notch lawyer and a senior. You can teach Ashley a lot. She's still young."
With a cool and calm demeanor, Sean carried himself like someone in charge.
Brown sneered, "Sean, haven't you gone up against her before? Don't you know if she needs any newbie lessons?"
Sean had lost to Ashley in the past, and Brown never missed a chance to mock him for it.
It seemed Sean's loss wasn't just because of Ashley's skills but also because she had KM Group and Damian backing her up!
So, Brown never really thought Ashley was all that great.
Sean said calmly, "I'm fine with losing to Ashley. The study of law never ends; if you stop, you'll get left behind."
Brown cursed under his breath, thinking Sean was just talking big, and sneered, "Are you blinded by a pretty face?"
Sean replied seriously, "Recognizing others' strengths is how you keep getting better. You might want to try it."
"Hmph! I don't need to!" With that, Brown stormed off.
Ashley watched Brown leave in a huff and smiled, "Sean, you just made me look good in public. Brown's definitely going to see you as an enemy now. He really hates me."
Sean said, "Brown's a tricky one. Don't go head-to-head with him; he plays dirty."
Ashley sighed, "Too late for that. We're back in court next week."
Sean had heard about the divorce case Ashley was handling. His uncle had mentioned it, and since Robert and Brown were related, they saw Ashley as a big problem. Brown would definitely pull out all the stops to beat her.
"Did he push for the trial next week? Be extra careful these days, for your safety and your client's. You can ask for protection if needed," Sean advised.
Ashley knew the risks and wasn't taking any chances, "Got it, I'll be careful."
Sean saw the seriousness in her eyes but was still worried, "Don't hesitate to ask for help if you need it."
"Thanks, Sean," Ashley said.
Sean had to stick around for the verdict, so he walked Ashley to the courthouse entrance, "Next week, the School of Politics and Law is having a seminar. The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Capital City will be there. I'll send you an invite. You should come."
Ashley didn't want to miss such a great opportunity, replying, "Sure, I'll make time for it."
Meanwhile, Robert was chain-smoking and cursing, "Damn it, how did Ashley get a video of me at the club!"
Brown tossed his briefcase into the back seat, got in the driver's seat, and loosened his tie, "How many times did I check with you? You kept saying there'd be no evidence. Now what?"
Robert laughed, "You're the best lawyer at the Rochester City Prosecutor's Office. Can't you handle this? Can a secretly recorded video even be used as evidence?"
Brown didn't feel like giving a law lesson and, with bloodshot eyes, asked, "Have you cut ties with that woman? Stop messing around and lay low for a while."
"It's over, way over. I'm not in the mood for it! Last time at the club, that was..." Robert trailed off as he spotted Ashley coming out of the courthouse, walking confidently with her long hair tied up, showing off her graceful neck.
Brown smacked him on the head, "What are you staring at? Women are trouble. At a time like this, you're still ogling them!"
If he'd known Robert was hiding so much, he wouldn't have taken the case, even out of respect for their elders. It could seriously mess up his reputation in the legal world.
"No," Robert mumbled, "that woman!"
"That's Ashley, your wife's attorney!" Brown said.
Robert squinted, "You mean she's Ashley? Did she take the video?"
"Don't know if she took it, but it's in her hands," Brown said, clearly annoyed.
Robert's eyes followed Ashley until she got into a car, then he said uncertainly, "I think I've seen her before. She looks a lot like the new hostess in the private room, especially the neck and chin."
Brown, suddenly interested, stopped loosening his tie and stared at him, "Explain clearly."
Robert thought hard, "That day, Amy brought a newcomer to the private room. She looked a lot like Ashley, but she had heavy makeup on, so I couldn't recognize her. I feel like it was her."
Brown laughed loudly, shaking the car. "Ashley actually used this trick to find evidence. That's clever, very clever!"
Meanwhile, Harold called Ashley and Lynn to his office.
He poured two cups of tea and gestured for them to sit, "Please sit, you two really did a good job, uh?"
The sarcasm was thick.
Lynn kept a straight face, "No, Thank you, Mr. Brin."
Harold slammed the cup down, put his hands on his hips, and shouted, "Impressive! Very impressive! I asked you to work together on a case, and you ended up undermining each other! Do you still want to stay at Sky Balance Law Firm? If not, get out!"
Ashley stayed silent, letting him rant.
Harold ranted for ten minutes before saying, "Ashley, why didn't you present the evidence earlier?"
Ashley said, "Sorry, I only got the evidence right before the trial and didn't have time to inform you."
Harold didn't buy it. "Fine, you've learned from Brown. Presenting evidence suddenly and claiming you just got it, very good, learning on the job."
Lynn sneered.
"And you, Lynn, I heard you went undercover to investigate Robert?" Harold said.
"Mr. Brin, I just wanted to get the evidence quickly, so I was in a hurry," Lynn said.
"Shut up! A female lawyer using herself to find the defendant's flaws is very touching! Next time, will you become someone's lover?" Harold said.
Lynn hurriedly explained, "No! This was the first and last time."
Ashley stayed silent.
After scolding them enough, Harold felt it was time to stop, "Both of you, write a 2,000-word reflection."
Ashley stayed silent.
After scolding them, Harold got a call from Hendrix.
"Did you install surveillance in my office?" Harold said.
Hendrix, lying at home with his leg in a sling, said, "I heard about it. They both made mistakes, but Lynn was wrong at first. Ashley was just responding."
"Get to the point," Harold said.
Harold knew Hendrix had a soft spot for Ashley and would naturally speak well of her.
Having worked together for many years, he knew Hendrix was capable and loyal but not great with matters of the heart.
Hendrix said, "Brown won't let Ashley off. You should find someone to protect her secretly."
Harold rubbed his temples, "I'll try."
"Forget it, I don't think you can. Give me special authority. Before the trial next week, Ashley is under my protection," Hendrix said.
