Chapter 140

International Air
Private Jet

Rain stood back leaning against the bathroom door with the borrowed shirt and shorts hugged to her chest.

For being a jet, the bathroom was much larger than those on a commercial plane, and there was more than enough room for two people in it; vanity, toilet, and shower.

Kita was sitting on the lowered lid to the toilet, studying at his hands.

The look on his face Rain had seen before, and it was always when he was going to get closed off and lost deep in thought while he resolved.

This was supposed to be a nice mini-vacation where they could unwind.

The hectic interviews and shooting schedule was taking its toll on her bodyguard, even if he denied it. They were supposed to spend the weekend just relaxing; dinner at a fancy restaurant when all dressed up after the opera, maybe do some shopping, and sleep in and eat lots of Italian food.

But it’s turning into a nightmare for those that are supposed to protect her.

Rain took a deep breath and forced a smile then headed over to him. “You need to talk,” she said, setting the clothing on the vanity.

Kita didn’t say anything.

What was there to say?

The innocent, young woman didn’t know of the devil or have been face to face with the embodiment of evil.

Kita had.

And because he did what honor dictated he needed to do, four innocent young people were killed.

Rain stood in front of him. “Talk to me, Kita Yasuhiro,” she pleaded, caressing her fingers through his hair. “You can’t hide in here for the entire flight.”

“Yes I can,” he retorted before groaning.

Only Seon Rain could effortlessly cause his guard to slip and make him resort to a petulant child.

“Oh how lonely I’ll be out there without you to protect me from the turbulence and your shamelessly flirting baby brother,” Rain retorted, stepping into him more and split his knees. She coaxed him into her and she took his hands in hers then pulled his arms around her hips. “It’s okay to talk when you need to,” she whispered, caressing her fingers through his hair.

Kita looked up at her and Rain looked down to meet his eyes. “What you want me to say I have no longing of speaking about-”

“Because it is a failure in your eyes,” Rain finished for him.

“I did fail, and it cost Will those he holds in his heart,” he argued.

Rain nodded. “In your heart, that is what you believe to be true, but we both know it isn’t,” she informed him, massaging his scalp with her nails and his eyes fluttered.

Kita loved it when she gave him massages; it didn’t matter if it was his feet or his head, he welcomed them all.

“Of what you told me of Oni,” she continued, keeping her voice down, “she is unbelievably intelligent and cunning, manipulative and calculating. That we can agree?”

“Giving the ogre much more credit than I would like, but we are in agreement,” he guardedly admitted.

Rain smiled; when he pouted like that it always made her heart flutter. “Then what would be the purpose of targeting William Lee of all people?” she asked. “Surely that is suicide, regardless of how high her opinion of herself is or how high of a pedestal she has perched upon.”

Kita leaned back and cocked an eyebrow; that, he hadn’t thought of.

Suiko would never take on William Lee of all people, especially when Lula is at his side.

Even when they were children, Suiko has been terrified of Lula Yasuhiro; Suiko’s infatuation with Kita, even when they were kids, was insulting to her and the Yasuhiro family in Lula’s opinion.

Never would Suiko do anything so reckless and blatant, especially something that would come back on her with very little effort.

“I should have seen it sooner,” Kita whispered, his eyes moving over Rain’s face many times.

“You would have seen it eventually,” Rain said, just as softly. “Emotions are a gift, but they are also our greatest weakness because they are exploitable. You taught me that.”

Kita gave her a look. “Sounds like a lesson I should have skipped,” he said, causing Rain to giggle. “Thank you for pulling me back from the edge of losing it.”

She smiled, smoothing his hair down. “As long as you’ll allow me, I’ll always be here to pull you back when needed,” she promised.

As much as Kita liked the way that sounded, commonsense warned that Seon Rain was just being nice and trying to keep him from bringing any more dishonor to the family than he already had.

“Take your time,” Rain whispered, pulling her fingers through his hair again; she knew he wasn’t as composed as he was pretending to be.

“If we take any more time than we already have it will be considered scandalous,” he retorted, his hold on her increasing.

“Let them talk,” Rain said with a smile. “The only one with an overly creative, and perverted, imagination on the other side of the door sent me in to keep you from doing something foolish. Lucien will run interference for us, and he will come to his own conclusions as to what we are doing in here.”

Kita nodded. “Yes, that sums my baby brother accurately… I hate that you effortlessly pull me back like you do.”

She made a mocking face that made him smile. “It is a skill, but I only willingly put myself at risk for you. You’ve pulled me back from losing it more times than you know, and not once have you asked for anything in return. I hate that you don’t ask for anything-”

“I do not have to ask for anything because you give me everything, Seon Rain,” he interrupted. “I hate that you do, that you give everyone so much, but never will I complain about what you give me. It is not appropriate, and if my family honor was intact it would be something I would have to step away from-”

“But it isn’t intact,” Rain interrupted with a smile.

“No, it is not, and yes, find humor in that,” he grumbled, getting a chuckle from the woman he was holding.

“It is something we will suffer through together,” she offered.

“Privately,” he agreed.

Rain nodded; apparently that was the best she could get, and sadly, she was okay with that.
