Chapter 72

Seoul, Korea
Hotel Gym

Rain sat on the floor with Dae-Ho, waiting for the show. Will and Lula were with them, to Rain’s surprise, and waited as well.

Apparently something happened that put Lucien on Kita’s bad side, and now they were going to work that out in a way that only made sense to those of the Yasuhiro family.

“Why do they have umbrellas?” Dae-Ho asked.

Rain shrugged. “That’s what they were supposed to explain, but at the moment they’re just stretching…” her words trailed off and she smiled, eying the muscular backsides on the other side of the room.

“Seon Rain, stop objectifying me,” Kita warned without turning to regard her, causing Rain to blush.

Will smiled, readying to watch the show. “I created those umbrellas,” he smugly informed them. “They are inconspicuous personal protection instruments. With security being as tight as it is in most locations anymore, you need to be able to easily sneak in a weapon at times. They feature a reinforced carbon fiber shaft with a retractable blade in the end tip, special lightweight fabric canopy that is bullet proof, detachable titanium stretchers and ribs, and a lignum vitae handle.”

Dae-Ho cocked an eyebrow. “I have no idea what any of that means or why it’s important,” he said.

“Lignum vitae is the hardest, toughest wood in the world,” Rain said. “It’s been an export to Europe since the 16th century, but it’s native to the Caribbean and northern coast of South America.”

Now they were all looking at her.

“What?” she asked, embarrassed. “I read it in a magazine when I was ten.”

Will chuckled. “You have an eidetic memory?”

Rain shrugged.

“It means-” he started.

“Seon Rain knows what it means,” Kita said. “Ready for the demonstration?” he asked, looking to Lucien.

Lucien made a face then spun the umbrella in his hand around like a joong bong before dipping and ducking, doing impressive aerials and flips as he moved away from his brother, distancing himself from Kita.

Dae-Ho and Rain applauded.

Lucien bowed.

Kita shook his head; that wasn’t helpful.

“I’m too pretty to be bloodied by my butt-hurt big brother before a red carpet event,” he said, plopping down between Will and Rain on the floor. “And I’m too classy to humiliate you in front of your charge.”

Lula smirked, getting to her feet. “But I’m not,” she said, snapping her hands out and the collapsible baton in each hand fully extended.

Kita cocked an eyebrow. “Sister, remember we both need to be in expert condition for the red carpet,” he reminded her.

“Don’t worry, Brother, Lucien will step in for you if needed,” she said then attacked.

Expertly Lula wielded the batons in her hands, and Kita narrowly blocked each with the umbrella. Their feet moved in time, he retreated around the room, and she stepped in time with him. They moved impressively fast. Each precision swipe or jab with Lula’s batons, Kita narrowly avoided. And each jab and swipe with the umbrella Lula blocked and harmlessly knocked aside.

More than once Rain had gasped, and nearly shrieked in fear when she was certain Kita was done for. The only thing keeping her from making any noise were her hands that were firmly clasped over her mouth. She didn’t want to be the reason Kita was distracted because that would allow one of Lula’s deadly hits to make contact.

Kita used the handle of the umbrella in his hand as a hook and he pulled Lula into him by the back of the neck.

“Now, now, Sister, showing off in front of our client is truly unbecoming,” he scolded in her face.

Lula chuckled. “Now where would the fun be in that, Brother?” she mused before dipping back, away from him.

“Don’t,” he warned when she shifted her weight. “If you do, you’ll break your foot and then you’ll be out of the field until it heals.”

That, Rain understood.

“Lignum vitae!” Rain shouted. “It’ll break every bone in your foot or hand,” she said in a rush, sitting up tall.

If Lula heard her, Rain couldn’t tell.

But Kita did.
