Chapter 187

Gangnam Business District
Offices of Kim & Ko

The two lawyers sat on one side of the large conference table, their eyes wide and at a loss as to why the woman on the other side of the table was there seeking their representation.

When they saw a Seon Rain as a last minute appointment squeezed into their already busy schedule, they were prepared to cancel. But when she walked in and they realized who Seon Rain was, they cancelled the rest of their appointments that day.

“Myo Mi-Sun, we are big fans,” Lawyer Ko Sam humbly said with a bow.

“And it is an honor that you have graced us with your glowing presence today,” Lawyer Kim Korain added with a smile, bowing.

Rain smiled. “It is an honor that you made time in your busy schedule to see me. You may call me Seon Rain if you like. Myo Mi-Sun is my stage name.”

They bowed again.

“This is your retainer,” she said when Kita pulled an envelope from his inside jacket pocket then slid it across the table to them. “Once the retainer is accepted I would like to sign the non-disclosure agreement before we continue.”

The lawyers looked at each other.

That wasn’t normal, and they weren’t sure why she was there trying to retain their services. They were family court attorneys, not entertainment or personal injury lawyers. Korea’s sweetheart wouldn’t be there now unless she needed help with something of a family nature…

Lawyer Ko Sam gasped. “Are you pregnant?” he blurted out before getting smacked upside the head by his partner. “Sorry. That was rude, but I’m not sure how we can help you unless it is a family court matter or a paternity issue.”

Rain continued to smile.

Lawyer Kim Korain opened then envelope and eyed the check inside and his complexion paled and eyes widened.

Absently he smacked his partner, trying to get him to look.

“What?” Lawyer Ko Sam asked.

Lawyer Kim Korain handed him the envelope. “Uh, what?” he asked, eying the check. “This is too much for any service of ours.”

Kita next placed a legal sized envelope with non-disclosure agreements and retainer agreements inside on the table for them to sign before they continued.

Rain patiently waited while the lawyers read the contracts before they signed.

Chairman Hu didn’t support her doing this, but Rain was doing what she knew was the right thing to do in her heart. Pan Jin deserved to be safe and happy, to know her family and to know what love is. To Rain’s surprise, though it shouldn’t have been, Kita supported her full heartedly.

Once the lawyers signed the forms, they replaced them in the envelope.

“You have our attention,” Lawyer Kim Korain said.

Rain offered a slight bow of the head. “You two are inarguably the best family law lawyers in the country,” she said. “Your reputations are golden, and you are passionate about fighting for those without a voice. I need that passion and conviction now.”

They nodded, waiting for her to get to where their services were needed, but it was nice to hear such glowing accolades from one of their favorite actresses.

“In your private waiting room my cousin Hu Dae-Ho sits with a young woman,” Rain continued. “That woman is Pan Jin, his half-sister we just learned existed.”

“Oh,” they said, seemingly understanding.

“She is also my half-sister,” Rain said, causing their eyes to widened.

Now the size of the retainer and the thickness of the non-disclosure and retainer agreements being what they were made sense.

This was scandal making.

Kita gave them a copy of the DNA test that confirmed Pan Jin was biologically related to Seon Rain and Hu Dae-Ho. “The results are from one of the most reputable labs in Paris,” he said. “To prevent any conflicts of interests the work was outsourced and the identities of those being tested were kept private. A second facility in Tokyo with no ties to the first confirmed the results for absolute certainty.”

“Pan Jin’s mother is the same vile person that abandoned her son and husband when she learned she was pregnant with her,” Rain explained. “She is also the person that was giving my mother anti-depressants to help with her postpartum depression… The pills she was supplying she was stealing from a neighbor and my mother had an adverse reaction to them, which caused her to kill herself and her husband, as well attempted to kill their daughter.”

Scandal in the making was an understatement.

Kita supplied them the reports from the autopsies, accident report, as well as the confidential information from the drug company that pulled the postpartum depression medication because of those side-effects which were in Soo’s system at the time of her death.

“I learned of my half-sister’s existence through fate and a ridiculously observant late night dinner date,” Rain said, looking at Kita and he offered a small smile. “When Dae-Ho learned of their shared mother, she was vicious and attacked them. Currently she is still in jail because no one will post the bail. There has been a long history of mental, emotional, and physical abuse that Pan Jin has been at the hands of. I do not want her going back with her mother.”

Why Myo Mi-Sun was there in front of them, now made sense.

“The courts,” Lawyer Kim Korain started, “have very strict stipulations when it comes to granting a change in custody or guardianship of a dependent. I’m assuming it was your father that fathered Pan Jin?”

Rain nodded. “I was unaware of his adultery but I do not blame him for it. My mother was a stranger to us because of the pills she was taking to help her get over her depression so she could be a loving mother and wife. Dae-Ho wanted to petition the court for guardianship of his little sister, but he is not in a position to meet the court’s very strict requirements. I am,” she said.

Kita gave them a folder from the briefcase that he brought. “Financial records, investment and real estate portfolios, as well as a trust that has been set up in Pan Jin’s name.”

They took the folder then looked over the information provided.

It was impressive and professionally put together. It was everything that a court would require…

Except for one thing.

“Pan Jin’s mother is alive and well,” Lawyer Ko Sam said. “And the courts look at that. A single woman, or a single man, are very difficult to sell the courts on when it comes to a change in custodial guardianship of a dependent. All the money and fame in the world will only drag it out until Pan Jin is of age in the eyes of the courts.”

Lawyer Kim Korain shook his head. “The courts would leave her in the custody of her mother until proceedings are concluded.”

Rain nodded her understanding. “That is why Dae-Ho and Pan Jin are not in here now,” she said, motioning for Kita do present the needed information.

Kita presented them another folder. “Financial statements, real estate holdings, a very impressive investment portfolio, and background check,” he said.

They looked from him to the provided information.

“Very impressive security clearance,” Lawyer Kim Korain commented. “But that’s to be expected for a bodyguard, isn’t it?”

Kita nodded. “If I were her bodyguard, yes, it would be. Keep looking,” he instructed in a level tone.

When they got to the back pages, their eyes widened.

“Will that meet and exceed the courts requirements to give Seon Rain guardianship of Pan Jin?” Rain asked.

Absently they nodded.

“We will prepare the necessary paperwork and present it to the courts this afternoon,” Lawyer Kim Korain said.

“And we’ll proposition the court for an emergency placement of Pan Jin until we go in front of the court,” Lawyer Ko Sam promised. “That will keep her safe and in your custody even if it isn’t signed off on by the courts yet.”

Rain offered a slight bow before getting to her feet. “Thank you. Your reputations truly do you no justice, but I am very grateful you are helping me protect my family. Please, if there is anything else you require or I can do, don’t hesitate to reach out,” she said and Kita offered them a business card.

They bowed before exiting the office and went to retrieve Pan Jin and Dae-Ho so they could grab lunch before getting to the office to meet Ong Se-Ri.
