Chapter 44

Seoul, Korea
City Center

Lucien sat at an outdoor table drinking a bubble tea, his attention on the woman sitting by the front windows of the restaurant on the corner. The woman wasn’t talking, was eating alone which appeared to be a normal thing for her, and she never looked away from the mobile phone she was scrolling through.

Lula sent him out to track the reporter Ong Se-Ri while she was in the heart of the business district. Something felt off, Lula had said, so she sent him out. The woman was easy to track; her social media geo-tagged her every location like a fool. That was how they were able to find the woman every time Lucien was sent to do recon.

With egotistical people and social media, it made it exceptionally easy to track a target.

Thought, it did surprise them when they discovered Myo Mi-Sun didn’t have that kind of trackability. All of her social media activity was strictly secondhand and managed by Dae-Ho. Even then, the young man wasn’t foolish enough to allow geo-tracking, and most of the location specific postings were posted well after they were gone so they didn’t invite trouble or fans.

As difficult as this job should have been from the start, the steps that were already being taken by the client actually made their job even harder because it exposed there was even more going on than they knew.

“You eat so stinking slowly,” Lucien whined.

Ong Se-Ri was taking her time eating, as if she was waiting for something and that something Lucien was supposed to discover. The woman kept coming back to this same district around this time for the past week. Lucien had crossed paths with her four times, neither of which she remembered as it should be, but he could never figure out what her purpose for being that far from her office was.

The dining in the area wasn’t that great, in his opinion, and the atmosphere was loud and polluted; busy with people, traffic, and commotion that he struggled to tune out.

“You know, if you want to know what she’s reading I can easily hack it.”

Lucien chuckled. “Stay out of my head. It’s so weird and creepy when you do that, Will.”

William Lee chuckled from all the way in Pulau Ujong, Singapore; he was bored and eavesdropping on the operation in South Korea that he provided tech for. He couldn’t see Lucien or what he was doing, for the most part, but he did own a few satellites that provided impressively clear imagery in real time. Not to mention, he got bored and hacked security and traffic cameras in the area.

“I’m bored,” Will whined. “Can’t you do something fun like a high speed chase or a shootout? Something that would be worth my time and effort to watch through hacked cameras?”

Again, he laughed. “No. Dignitary security stipulations in South Korea mandate any use of a firearm to be reported to NIS within eight-hours of the discharge otherwise you lose your carry privileges. Unlike my brother and sister, I kind of rely on a gun to do my job.”

“Uh huh,” Will said. “I’ve seen your sister do the freakishly impressive with a gun.”

“As have I,” Lucien agreed. “But she’s even more terrifying with an expandable baton.”

That was putting it mildly and they both knew it.

Lula Yasuhiro was a force to be reckoned with regardless of what weapon she was wielding.

“Shouldn’t you be worrying about the hostile takeover your Board of Directors are plotting?” Lucien asked as more of an afterthought.

“How did you hear about that?” Will asked. “Did those jerks take that threat public?!”

“Not that I’m aware of. The reboot caused the line to stay open and I heard your assistant,” Lucien admitted. “Once the patch loaded the connection ended. I wasn’t trying to eavesdrop, but I figured turnabout was fair play so I didn’t mention it sooner.”

Will groaned. “I suppose it is. And yes, they are trying to force me out. I don’t know what their problem is. Profits are soaring, we’ve gotten more government contracts then we know what to do with, the medical division is beyond profitable, and… I’m tired, Luci,” he groaned. “So, so tired.”

That Lucien understood, but the public didn’t.
