Chapter 153

Firenze, Florence
Morosini Villa

Kita’s lips had parted when Rain’s did, but she ignored their silent call and leaned up over him and kissed his forehead instead.

Kita didn’t want a platonic kiss.

And he didn’t want to be the one to tell Rain what he wanted.

Kita wanted Rain to tell him what to do and what to say!

It would easier that way since he didn’t know what he wanted, what to do, or what to say.

But Rain was making him figure it out.

Did that mean she knows what she wants to hear from him?

She knows what she wants when he doesn’t?!

“Since I scared you,” Rain whispered, blushing, “I’m going to freshen up in the bathroom. Then, if you want, we can sneak into town and get something to eat. I’m starving.”

Kita nodded. “When are you not hungry?” he asked, trying to distract her from the stir of arousal she effortlessly caused.

“True, but this feels like I haven’t eaten in at least forty-eight hours.”

He looked at her curiously before pulling his mobile phone from under his pillow and unlocked it.

Kita sat up in a rush, knocking Rain backwards to the floor. “This cannot be right… Sorry,” he added as more of an afterthought.

“What’s wrong?” Rain asked, sitting up.

“I have been sleeping for forty-one hours,” he said, showing her his mobile phone.

She looked at it then giggled, taking the phone from him. “Did Lucien take that photo?” she asked with a smile.

Kita’s eyes widened and he tried to take his phone back but she pulled it away from him.

The wallpaper was a picture from the Coex Aquarium with two small, darkened figures sitting together on a bench in front of a wall of bright blue water filled aquatic life. Rain knew it was them; Kita was sitting with his back straight with an umbrella resting across his lap, and she was resting her head on his shoulder, enjoying the show.

“Why didn’t you send that to me? I would have used it as a wallpaper, too,” she said, playfully smacking him in the chest.

Kita shrugged, watching her.

That wasn’t the reaction he expected, but at the same time it was.

It wasn’t professional by any means, having a picture of his charge as a wallpaper on his mobile phone, but when his mother forwarded him the picture that Lucien had sent her, he couldn’t bring himself to delete it.

“There, I forwarded it to my phone since I know you won’t,” she smugly informed him, handing him back the phone. “Slept for more than forty-four hours, haven’t eaten in over fifty hours… You know what that means!” she beamed, bouncing with excitement.

Kita groaned. “Yes, yes I do. Take a shower and I will see if I can find my siblings. They should have woken us up.”

Rain leaned into him and kissed him on the lips, it was just a quick peck, then got to her feet and hurried to the bathroom, skipping with happiness, the door closing behind her.

Kita’s eyes were wide.

“Seon Rain just kissed me?!” he said in a whisper, touching his lips. “She kissed me.” He chuckled, looking to the closed bathroom door. “Seon Rain actually kissed me.”

“It was a peck.”

Instantly his smile fell and he looked to the doorway on the opposite of the room.

“Mother?” Kita asked, confused. “What happened? Why are you here?”

Evie gave him a look. “That is a lovely way to greet your mother. I expect the accusatory tone, but not the irritation clearly visible in your expression.”

“You would look the same if someone interrupted you after getting your first long awaited kiss with the person that rooted in your heart when you least expected it,” Murai scolded from behind her.

Kita’s eyes widened. “Father?” he asked, scrambling to his feet then bowed.

“Son,” Murai said, stepping around his wife then bowed. “We need to talk.”

Kita stayed bowed. “Of course, Sir. Allow me to get presentable-”

“Freshen up and we will meet you downstairs,” Evie said. “Your siblings are out with the others and staying in the city so we can have privacy.”

“Yes, Ma’am,” Kita replied.

Murai gave his wife a warning look. “That is enough, My Dear. Son, freshen up and we’ll talk downstairs.”

Kita bowed again as they closed the door behind them.

He quickly called Lucien, but it went to voicemail.

Not wanting to hear it from Lula, he pocketed his mobile phone.

Something happened.

Something that would change their plans and possibly force Kita to end his contract in Korea with Seon Rain.

That would destroy his heart and crush his soul.

For the first time in his life, he was actually happy! And that was solely because of the smiling young woman that’s rooting in every aspect of his life and heart.

Could Kita so easily give Seon Rain up?

Would he be able to go back to the life he knew without her in it?

If Kita were to be honest with himself, it took strength he didn’t know he possessed to simply keep from pulling her into his arms and kissing her senseless.

Kita was tired of pushing her away, tired of the rules, his rules as she pointed out, that he was hiding behind. Yes, it was a family trait to fall into bed with those commissioned with protecting or killing, as in the case of his parents. But Kita didn’t want to follow in that aspect of his parents’ footsteps. When he was ready, he wanted to do it right…

But when would Kita be ready if he kept his heart hidden behind a wall of rules that he wanted to break?!

Perhaps this was the in he needed?

Being forced from the job would mean he’d no longer be contractually obligated to keep it professional and stay separated on a personal level. Chairman Hu demanded that his niece’s image stay squeaky clean; no scandals, no romances, and no tabloid fodder.

So far, in only a couple of months, they had failed at nearly all of the requirements of the contract. The only thing Kita hadn’t failed at was keeping her safe.

That, he would do with his life regardless of being on the clock or not.

“That is it then,” Kita whispered, pushing his hand through his disheveled hair. “I either stay and keep her safe and at arm’s length, or I quit and follow the more dangerous path,” he said.

Kita looked to the closed bathroom door and it felt as if his heart was breaking in his chest.
