Chapter 76
Seoul, Korea
Hotel's World Cuisine Restaurant
“I did,” Kita agreed, not sure why that was surprising to her. “You put her on speaker and it would be rude to continue speaking as if I wasn’t even in the room when it is my phone. Also, she would hit me if I didn’t introduce her to the woman speaking to her.”
Evie chuckled. “It is a pleasure, Seon Rain,” she said. “Why did you allow your sister to hurt you?”
Kita shrugged, taking another bite.
“Your stubborn son shrugged,” Rain said. “I’m sorry he was hurt by his sister. They have been at odds for days, but I don’t know why. I think it’s me.”
He snorted, rolling his eyes and shoved another bite into his mouth.
Evie sighed. “I am sure it is, but you cannot take the blame for that. Lula strong-armed her brother into taking the South Korean protection detail. It was time he got back out there in the field and figured things out with his life. You cannot blame yourself for that, ChouChou. Lula and Kita fight because they are so much alike. And both are so, so stubborn, just like their father. I can only blame him for them.”
Rain giggled. “Yes, they are both very stubborn. I feel sorry for Lucien when he gets stuck in the middle.”
“Yes, my baby boy is truly his mother’s twin,” Evie agreed. “Tries to keep the peace but has no problem starting a war in order to do it. How is the protection detail going? Kita will not call me back or answer my calls. Lucien is unbelievably skilled at not answering my questions and distracting me with the inconsequential. Lula tells me everything she wants me to know and yet nothing I wanted to know. They are their father’s children, after all.”
Kita snorted. “They got that from you, Mother,” he corrected, talking with his mouth full.
“Yes, they did,” Evie mused. “You are your father’s twin. One day I had hoped you would take after your mother, but I am still waiting for that. So, how is the assignment going? Do you need additional support? My schedule is rather open.”
“Mother,” Kita warned.
Rain softly swatted him in the chest. “Be nice. If your mother wants to help her children, let her do it. It would be an honor to meet her.”
Evie purred in delight. “You truly are a sweet girl. Tell me what is going on and why it is my children are at odds with each other.”
Rain looked to Kita for permission, and to her surprise, he nodded that it was okay. “My home was burned down care of an arsonist that your children believe is one of my many stalkers. They thing one stalker is trying to prevent another stalker, which I did know about, from stalking me as she has been. That discovery caused Lucien’s implants to inflict him with unimaginable pain,” she whispered the latter, wiping away a tear.
Evie groaned. “That is what brought William to Seoul,” she surmised.
“Will was able to isolate the signal and is working on tracing that unknown second stalker,” Rain confirmed. “They didn’t tell me, my cousin did. Lula used the courts to take out the stalker I knew about, but it won’t stop the persistent reporter… Your children keep much from me,” she said, looking at Kita. “They don’t need to spare my feelings or keep things from me. They have a really bad habit of doing that.”
Kita offered a small, apologetic smile.
“Yes, they do,” Evie agreed. “Son, this assignment is much different than your last. In order to protect the young woman, you need to involve the young woman in her protection.”
“Yes, Ma’am,” he said.
“And you, ChouChou, need to fight them when they exclude you,” Evie warned Rain. “My children are learning a new form of protection while in the field. What Lula initially thought would be a simplistic babysitting job has turned into anything but. You cannot blame yourself for that, ChouChou. If one stalker Lula was able to take out, and a second is unknown, that most likely means there are even more out there.”
Rain gasped.
Kita shook his head; he wished his mother had a bit more tact but he expected nothing less from her.
“Are they all dangerous?” Evie rhetorically asked. “No. Because you are famous that fame comes with fans, many of which could be considered stalkers due to their idol worship or level of support of your career. The problem Lula and the others face when it comes to protecting you is trying to untangle those threats. Do not allow them to force you out of your own protection detail. You are critical for their success. Do you understand?”
It was a struggle, but Rain eventually swallowed the lump that had formed in her throat.
“Yes, Madame,” she whispered.
“Good,” Evie said, sounding pleased with herself. “Now, tell me all about your upcoming schedule? What is in store for you and my children?” she beamed.
Kita sighed; he walked into this one. He motioned for Rain to tell his mother whatever she wanted because she had already inadvertently invited his mother into the fold.
