Chapter 206
Seoul, Korea
Lilac Suite
Will sat on the floor with three open laptops in front of him, a pile of American sweets and cans of energy drinks next to him at the ready, and a headset on to connect him to Santos.
Roland Santos was in Arlington, Virginia (United States), and was remotely piloting the drone that was shadowing the caravan as they went.
Santos was in the United States Navy and was one of the world’s best drone pilots. Will used him for testing on U.S. Government Military contracts. This wasn’t exactly what he was contracted for, but Santos didn’t mind; it was a new model of drone that was even more responsive and easier to fly than the last ones Will came up with, and the live video was so much better than current models.
On the large television in the suite, Will was watching the three black sedans race through the city.
“Seoul is pretty,” Santos said, his voice coming through the headset Will was wearing. “I’ve never been there personally.”
“It is nice,” Will said. “The street food and sweets are to die for, and make it a must go-to foodie destination.”
He chuckled. “Is there something I should be looking out for? Snipers or anything like that?”
“I hope not,” Will said. “Lula is in the third car.”
“Understood, Sir,” Santos said, well aware of who Lula was and the importance she had in Will’s life.
The trip through the city had been relatively uneventful. The traffic lights Will hacked hadn’t caused any issues or delays in traffic that were concerning. No emergency vehicles were caught in the traffic slowdown caused by the excessive green lights that went one direction. And Lula had yet to voice any concerns; her com was open so Will could hear everything.
Will didn’t agree with Lula seeing Olenev Slava Ilyich, the Russian that Kita took out at the hotel. He had yet to say anything, his prints didn’t come back with a name for the NIS; he had temporary fingerprints glued onto of his actual prints. The prints Evie pulled off the money, however, had his prints all over them and that lead to a positive identification.
Olenev Slava Ilyich is for Russian mafia turned hired muscle and nothing more.
Lula only wanted a name or means as to who or how he was hired. With that information, she and Will could easily track down the person that sent Olenev to kidnap Myo Mi-Sun and it would close out that chapter in the South Korean drama they’ve found themselves in.
Getting a stubborn Russian to talk would be nearly as hard as tracking down Myo Mi-Sun’s remaining stalkers.
The middle car swerved.
“Sir, we have a problem,” Santos said. “Vehicle two is losing control.”
Will saw that on the screen. “Switch to thermal imagery and get closer but not too close,” he instructed.
The drone dropped down closer to the swerving sedan, the video on the television switching to thermal to show what was happening inside the vehicle.
The prisoner was in the center of the backseat, the two guards on either side of her were unmoving and slumped against the doors. Ryo was fighting with the Agent in the front passenger seat, her arms over his head and the cuffs pressing against his throat, choking him out. Frantically he flailed, trying to get her off of him.
“Prisoner is loose,” Will said.
“Understood,” Lula said, rolling down the back window and leaned out it with gun in hand and aimed for the back tire. “Is it clear?”
Will flipped through traffic cams, splitting his attention between the drone footage and cams he could access. “You have thirty seconds before there will be collateral.”
“Understood,” Lula said, taking aim before pulling the trigger.
The back tire instantly started to lose pressure and the sedan swerved even more, the driver struggling to gain control.
“Why isn’t he breaking?!” Will asked himself, it didn’t make sense. “Santos, get closer.”
The drone dropped in even lower and clearly showed why the driver wasn’t stopping.
The driver was dead.
Ryo was between the front seats, steering the best she could, the driver’s foot pressing down on the accelerator causing the sedan to dangerously speed through the city.
“Get in front of it!” Lula barked out to their driver when the middle car slammed into the back of the lead car, sending it veering into a lamppost.
Agent Han was on his mobile phone, alerting operations of what is happening and to get reinforcements.
“Lula, be careful,” Will warned. “If you take out another tire, they’ll completely lose control and that will cause collateral damage I can’t save you from.”
Lula softly growled and leaned back in the car; Will was right.
There were too many people on the sidewalks and too much waiting traffic to not cause casualties. Ryo may not have cared about that, but Lula did.
“These sedans are less than a year old,” Lula said. “They have a navigation system, yes?”
Agent Han gave her a look. “Yes, why?”
“Will, hack it,” Lula said with a smirk.
“On it,” Will said. “Santos, I need you to land that drone on the hood of the car.”
Santos chuckled. “Are you serious?”
“Yes. F7 will magnetize it once it lands so they can’t shake it off,” Will explained, frantically typing away on one of his laptops. “Once in place, I can hack the onboard system. If I can’t, a small, localized EMP (Electromagnetic Pulse) will fry the entire system and shut it down. It’ll kill the drone, too, but it’s a sacrifice we have to make.”
Santos groaned. “Damn it. I liked this one,” he complained, piloting the drone then lowered it to the hood of the swerving car, locking it down. “Eagle has landed, Boss. Good luck and God’s speed,” he said.
Will snorted and killed the engine instead of trying to hack it; it was faster that way…
But not fast enough.
Ryo pulled the steering wheel as hard as she could the moment the drone landed on the hood of the sedan. When Will triggered to kill the electronics, it killed the entire car, including steering, and the car hit the curb at a high rate of speed and rolled.
