Chapter 176
Yeonhui-Dong, Korea
Blue Lantern and Seishu-Sushi House
Mauri sat on the bench outside the theater and watched his son sway the young woman in his arms from side to side while he hummed under his breath a song that was only meant for them to hear.
The moment the movies concluded, and over a dozen bottles of sake were gone, the smiling, giggling young woman wanted to dance. And to Mauri’s surprise, his son was more than happy to facilitate that request while they waited for their ride to get there.
It truly warmed his heart that his eldest child has found someone that makes him happy.
And yes, Kita was unbelievably happy regardless of the front he puts on for the others. That was, perhaps, why Kita wanted Mauri to join them tonight, so he could show his father the growth he’s most recently had and where his heart was?
It was amusing to watch, really.
At first Kita maintained the bodyguard and client pretense, for the most part, but after two bottles of sake the stick was removed from his ass and Mauri got to see the side of his son that only Seon Rain had seen. Kita smiled, laughed, entertained her when she asked for a martial arts lesson, and allowed her to feed him.
There truly was nothing Kita would not do to make Seon Rain happy, and that was more than apparent now.
All Mauri has to do was figure out how to keep the stick out of his son’s ass when he wasn’t drinking.
Rain and Kita had undeniable chemistry, even though they were polar opposites, and the attraction was already there. His son watched everything the smiling young woman did with adore clearly visible in his eyes. And when he talked or did something, she watched him with a smile. They were always touching; knees touching under the table, his hand rested on her lower back, she rested her head on his shoulder, absently he caressed the inside of her arm, she pulled her fingers through his hair, absently wrapping a lock around them as she watched the movie.
It was cute, and something Lula would throw a fit about, Mauri knew, so he’d have to act fast and let his wife know what he was scheming before Lula and Kita had an epic blowup over it.
When Kita dipped Rain backwards, he smiled when she squeaked in surprise before he pulled her back into him.
“Aw, young love,” Mauri sighed with a smile.
Along the road, parked in front of the theater, Lula and Evie sat, watching them.
They arrive fifteen minutes ago and had been sitting there waiting for them to join them.
“What are they doing?” Lula groaned.
Evie shook her head. “Be nice. They are dancing. It is a lovely night for dancing. Does William not dance with you?” she asked, knowingly.
William Lee has two left feet and everyone knew it.
“It isn’t right, Mother,” Lula argued. “She is the client-”
“And your father was the target,” Evie interrupted. “William Lee was the client. Riku was the potential client. What is your point?”
Lula rolled her eyes. “Mother, he could do better.”
Evie looked at her scowling daughter, her eyes moving over her tight expression studiously. “It has nothing to do with Seon Rain’s status in society or the broken home she comes from, is it? You do not know how to deal with your brother being happy, do you?”
That was putting it mildly.
Growing up, Kita was always serious and the ever vigilant solider. Since he was the eldest male heir, Kita knew what his future held and it was one he accepted with much reluctance. He didn’t smile and laugh, didn’t enjoy life or anyone’s company.
Lula didn’t know what Kita did or was like as an adult because he was so closed off, angry and indifferent.
Seon Rain brought him out of his shell, and Lula hated her for it.
“On your vacation we joined you on,” Evie started. “Your brother and the young woman were not with you when we arrived. Where were they?”
Lula made a face. “Kitty planned the entire vacation around Seon Rain and her likes. They did weird tourist things like make pottery and learned to blow glass. He made all the arrangements and wouldn’t let anyone join them. Luci followed, of course, and reported back it was completely mundane things like stomping grapes and making handmade butter, lessons on cooking region specialty foods, and I don’t know what else. When they are together, he’s happy and I hate her for it.”
Evie shook her head in disappointment. “You hate her because she has taken the solider from you. It is all business with you, is it not?”
“Isn’t it with you?” she retorted, watching her father dance around by himself as the other two swayed even though there wasn’t music playing.
“It was,” Evie admitted with a smile, watching her husband. “Then I met your father. My life was the never same after meeting him, and I would not have wanted it any other way. Love is never easy, ask William. You are like your mother, yes, and scared of change. But change is the only constant in the field and life. Do not fight it, and do not attack it as if it is the enemy, Lula. Embrace the one your brother has let into his heart, even if it is temporary, and if I find out you did anything to take that from him, I will kill you,” she warned, looking at her daughter.
Lula snorted. “I welcome your attempt, Mother,” she said before laying on the horn, stealing the others attention.
Mauri smiled wide and danced over to the car. “My beautiful wife,” he cooed, leaning into the car and kissed his wife. “Our little Seon Rain has amazing taste in movies and skill when it comes to planning date nights.”
Evie chuckled. “You are ridiculous when you drink, you old fool,” she said.
“But you still find me charming,” Mauri said, sliding in the backseat then hugged his wife that was sitting in the front seat. “The hangover tomorrow will cause me to be a mortal enemy of Seon Rain, but for tonight she is a daughter to us.”
Lula groaned.
“Yes, she is a daughter to us,” Evie agreed, watching Kita and Rain in the distance; he pulled her into his arms and was speaking softly to her.
What they were talking about, she didn’t know, but the smile filling Rain’s face strongly suggested they were words of endearment.
When they joined them, Rain sat between Kita and Mauri in the backseat and used her bodyguard as a pillow.
Mauri smiled. “Tonight you are a daughter in my heart, but tomorrow you will be my mortal enemy, Seon Rain, for the hangover that will surely follow will be worthy of death,” he warned.
Kita chuckled. “That is lovely, Father, thank you.”
Rain giggled. “I promise you, Mauri Yasuhiro, that the hangover shall be temporary at best. I prepared my should be patented hangover broth before we left so it would be ready for Kita and you tomorrow when needed.”
“You have a remedy for a hangover?” Mauri asked with a smile.
“She does,” Kita confirmed. “It kept me from letting her stalker get her. I was very close to shooting her myself.”
Again, Rain giggled. “Yes, I’m a tiny smiling demon. Isn’t that was you called me?”
“Yes, I did, and my opinion is the same on how demonic you are, Seon Rain,” Kita reminded her and she smiled wide.
Again, Lula groaned. “I hate you all,” she complained, putting the car in gear then pulled away from the theater.
Evie softly swatted her daughter. “Be nice to Chouchou other she will be the only daughter in our family,” she warned, and Kita laughed, loudly, startling them.
“You are not nearly as funny as you think you are, Mother,” Lula grumbled under her breath.
Evie smiled. “Yes, I am.”
