Chapter 28

Kita knocked on the door and waited.

Lula opened the door to her room. “Yes?”

“Come,” he said in a clipped tone then turned on his heels and headed for the nearest exit.

Lula grabbed her laptop and followed; she knew this was coming.

They rode the elevator down in silence. Lula didn’t know what happened, but she knew something had because Kita was suddenly interested in this job. She heard their return, and listened with the door cracked as Kita escorted Rain to her room for the night. They didn’t exchange pleasantries, the young woman merely thanked him for escorting her to dinner then closed the door after wishing him a good night.

Lula had woken Lucien up and told him to keep an eye on the two while she dealt with Kita since something transpired.

When the elevator reached the lobby, they exited and headed through it and passed the front desk and security guards, then claimed a table in the restaurant in the corner.

“What are you upset over now?” Lula asked once the waitress brought them over some coffees.

Kita rolled his head, cracking his neck.

“Did you kill someone?” she asked, curious.

“Not snapping their neck was the hardest thing I have ever done,” he admitted, causing her to laugh. “When you said Myo Mi-Sun was a magnet for trouble and drama, you neglected to explain that it is not her fault.”

Lula’s smile fell. “I mentioned it in passing, though it was merely conjecture until proof was obtained.”

He cocked an eyebrow.

“I was not certain, not until I started digging more. The poor girl is a target of the tabloids because she is being used as a scapegoat for others.”

“You saw the most recent?” he asked, tossing the tabloid on the table.

She picked it up and looked over the cover then went to the article and read through it. “Why do I have a feeling you know more about this leak than I do?”

“Because I do, for once,” Kita confirmed. “Myo Mi-Sun was physically assaulted by her drunken costar, and yet she is being made the villain.”

Lula looked up at him with wide eyes. “Why do you sound as if you care?” she asked, suspicious.

“I don’t!” he snapped at her. “What I care about it knowing the extent of the sh*t you got us into with this job. Having to deal with tabloid gossip is one thing, and it usually has a shred of merit thus there is nothing we can do about it. But for my charge to be blatantly targeted and used like this makes it impossible to get in front of and protect her from! You did not do a proper job at preparing Lucien and I for this assignment. You failed on so many levels that I am disappointed to call your sister-”

Lula chuckled. “Oh this isn’t good, Brother. You care about this girl.”

“I only care that she lives so I am not considered a failure again,” he shot back. “If these rumors and abuse push her over the edge and she takes her own life because of it, that means I failed to protect her. I will not fail again, Sister.”

She shook her head before taking a drink of her coffee.

As much as she wished her personality challenged brother was less robotic and more lively like she and Lucien, it was times like this that she really longed for the robot. She’d have to press Seon Rain to find out exactly what happened on their outing, because something had.

That Lula knew without question.

And she knew that Kita wouldn’t tell her.

The young woman would since she was seemingly an open book.
