Chapter 38
Seoul, Korea
Chairman Hu's Residence
Kita went over to one of the two windows and looked outside but didn’t see anything of concern; the back of the residence looked out over a manicured garden that was more river rock than grass with stone benches and a hammock. The tall privacy fencing was double layered wood that you couldn’t see through the slits of and was surprisingly sturdy. Eight-inches from the wooden fencing on the inside of the garden was a second fence; wrought iron that was in points along the top.
“Impressive, Chairman Hu,” Kita commented.
If someone was foolish enough to make it over the first fence, they would be impaled on the second fence.
“I can’t shake the feeling… Lucien!” he barked out.
The sound of his brother taking the stairs three at a time was followed by the man appearing in the doorway, wearing an undershirt and apron.
Kita didn’t ask about his attire.
“Did you bring a kit?” he asked in French.
Lucien nodded. “What’s wrong?” he asked.
“Eyes,” Kita whispered, looking around. “I feel as if I’m being watched.”
Lucien stepped into the room then instantly froze and jerked, nearly falling over and Kita hurried over and caught him. He quickly covered Lucien’s ears for him so he wasn’t assaulted more than he already had been and lead him out into the hallway away from the source of the signal.
“A little warning next time,” Lucien choked, trying to regain his bearings. “They’ll be calling-” he started to warn when his phone rang.
Kita nodded. “Report back and let them know you’ll provide insight to what caused the interference once I get the room broke down, then bring in the kit and I’ll take care of it.”
Lucien nodded, answering the phone. “Bonjour,” he whispered, stepping around Rain when she reached the top of the stairs.
“What is going on?” Rain demanded. “What did you do to Lucien? Tears are flooding his eyes and he’s pale.”
Kita blocked her from going into her room and motioned for her to stay in the hall. “I couldn’t shake the feeling of being watch,” he said quietly under his breath. “And Lucien’s implants usually pick up certain frequencies that are of concern, but not like that. Something’s wrong.”
Rain’s eyes widened and her hands covered her mouth to keep her squeak of surprise from breaking past them.
Then something occurred to Kita.
He looked from Rain to the bed cubby and back again.
She knew!
Kita motioned for Rain to go back down stairs with him; Lucien had to check in with IT in regards to the interference spike and the possible recalibration of his hearing units. They were experimental, he was one of twenty-five Beta testers worldwide, but Lucien’s were tweaked for the job. Once he brought in the kit Kita would take care of it.
“Why do you sleep in a cubby?” Kita asked, joining Rain in the kitchen.
Rain shrugged.
“Is it because you feel as if someone is watching you?” he pressed; when she looked away from him, he had his answer. “Please, wrap this up as quickly as you can because I’d like to get you back to the hotel… What is that?” he asked, sniffing.
“Have you ever had Sam Gae Tang?” she asked, dishing him up a bowl of the stuffed chicken and ginseng soup then offered it to him.
Kita gave her a look. “We don’t have time for this.”
His stomach growled.
“You didn’t eat breakfast, I can tell,” Rain said, offering him a spoon. “Please eat. How are you supposed to protect me if you are hungry?”
What option did he have?
Seon Rain wasn’t giving him one, and he was hungry.
Kita took the spoon and bowl. “Thank you.”
Rain smiled wide and gave him two thumbs up.
“Damn it,” Kita grumbled before shoving a heaping spoonful in his mouth.
He was in trouble, and not in the usual way.
