Chapter 196

Seoul, Korea
University Hospital of Seoul

Evie stood there, glaring down at the inept Detective that was trying to throw his weight around and push them out of the bombing investigation that nearly took their son from them.

The man’s greasy graying hair was combed over to hide his balding. His wrinkled shirt had staining under the arms and neck from excessive perspiration, and his jacket had oil stains down the front of it from lunch.

There was nothing intimidating about the man in the least, and it was an insult to their station and reputations to have the local detective, that somehow managed to infiltrate the private floor, in front of them now.

Mauri didn’t have it in him to fight with the man, so he was holding Lucien’s hand and praying for him to wake up while his wife took care of it.

If needed, Mauri would help her throw the body out the window to make it look like a suicide.

“You all are suspects in my investigation,” Detective Kang repeated, for the fifth time since neither of them had said anything or rebutted him.

The senior detective was at the end of an abysmal career. A bombing and murder would have helped save his reputation in the department, but his only suspects were three foreigners that had yet to say anything and were not intimidated by his authority in the least.

“The body of Manager Bak was located in her apartment and the cause of death is leading towards homicide-” his words cut off when there was a knock at the door.

In walked a man dressed in a pristine black suit with a white dress shirt and black tie.

“Madame,” Agent Han greeted with a bow. “Detective, your services are no longer required and your credentials have been revoked from the hospital. Please leave.”

Detective Kang snorted and puffed his chest out. “And who in the hell do you think you are?! These foreigners, that never checked in properly when they arrived in Korea, are suspects of interest in a murder and bombing.”

Agent Han gave him a look, one that more than conveyed he wasn’t intimated or impressed with the detective. “The investigation you were leading have been classified as a threat to national security, and you and your team have been pulled from it. All gathered information and the body have been taken into NIS (South Korea’s National Intelligence Service) custody.”

“Wait, what?” Detective Kang stammered. “Who in the Hell do you think you are?”

Agent Han pulled a sealed letter from his inside jacket pocket then handed it to the detective. “Those you are suggesting are responsible for the bombing in the Gwangjin District and the untimely demise of a suspected serial killer, have unquestioning diplomatic immunity. You even being here, in their presence, is an insult to their respective organizations.”

Detective Kang read through the official document that was signed off on and handed down by the highest court in South Korea. “You can’t be serious,” he said, looking between Evie and Agent Han. “These crimes took place on Korean soil, not Japanese or French! A Korean was murdered-”

“A Korean that was suspected of the untimely deaths of her eleven husbands,” Agent Han interrupted. “A woman that had killed many, and is now suspected of killing the former tenants that were in the unit where the bomb was. It was in your jurisdiction and yet you were none the wiser to Manager Bak’s criminal actions. That does not speak well for your detective skills or those of your men, Detective Kang.”

Detective Kang glared at him. “You little punk,” he sneered, raising his hand as if he was going to smack the agent.

“I would strongly advise against that. Please leave without making a scene otherwise you will be forcibly removed,” Agent Han said, his tone level and devoid of anything that hinted of emotion.

The detective glared at him.

“Whether it is my agents that remove you,” Agent Han warned, “or you are removed on a stretcher after Madame Blanchar or Master Yasuhiro address your tone and accusations against them, it is your choice. I have to warn you now, the Frenchwoman you have insulted is even more lethal than her husband who is ‘the’ Imperial Guard all guards have failed to measure up to.”

Detective Kang glared at them then turned on his heels and went storming out of the room and down to the elevators at the end of the hallway where more NIS agents were standing guard.

“My apologies, Madame Blanchar,” Agent Han said with a bow. “My men will stay posted for your privacy and security. If there is anything you need, do not hesitate to ask,” he said with another bow.

Evie nodded then reclaimed her seat next to her husband and to wait for her son to wake up.

Down the hallway, Detective Kang pouted, waiting for the elevator. “Stupid punk,” he grumbled under his breath. “Who does he think he is?”

When the elevator signaled its arrival, he stepped inside and one of the Agents standing guard joined him and hit the button for the lobby.

“Great, a babysitter,” he sneered.

The Agent ignored him and stood there, his attention straight ahead.

As the doors closed, a tall, broad man carrying a small woman turned and headed down the hall towards the room he was just removed from.

The woman in the man’s arms looked over his shoulder and made eye contact with Detective Kang, offering a small, apologetic smile, just as the doors closed.

“Who is that and why is she familiar?” Detective Kang mumbled, pushing his hand through his hair in frustration. “Another potential suspect? She looks Korean. That would be my jurisdiction.”

The Agent snorted. “Myo Mi-Sun is the farthest thing from being a suspect. Korea’s Sweetheart is engaged to the eldest child of the two that just removed you from the case and kicked you out of the hospital,” he amusingly informed him.

Detective Kang looked at the smug, overly amused young agent. “She isn’t a subject of interest, but her fiancé is now.”

“Her fiancé is the nephew of the Emperor of Japan, and is untouchable, is highly regarded in multiple countries as a solider, Imperial Guard, and personal protection agent, and was on the other side of Seoul when the explosion happened. Even entertaining him as a person of interest will only result in your untimely retirement and a humiliation you will never recover from.”

Once the elevator reached the lobby, the doors opened and the Agent motioned him to exit.

Detective Kang headed for the exit, even more irritated than he was before. His men that were waiting for him got to their feet and hurried after him.

“Boss, what’s going on?” Detective Pyo asked, hurrying after the senior detective. “I thought you were arresting them on suspicion of murder and terrorist activities?!”

Detective Kang shook his head. “Apparently it is a matter of national security and we have been taken off the case and all evidence and the body have been taken into custody by the National Intelligence Service.”

“No!” They gasped. “Can they do that?!”

He held up the document that proved they could, and they snatched it from him and started reading it.

“They just did,” Detective Kang sneered, getting in his car.

“Where are you going, Boss?” they asked.

“To the scene to get what I can before it’s completely locked down,” he said, slamming the door.
