Book 2.2 At First Touch.. Chapter 1
When my parents heard of a ship heading to the new world they did everything to get on that boat. The land was said to be nothing but forest a haven for our kind. the human world closing in on them as they built more and more buildings. Cutting down the forest that helped us hide. This was a big step for my parents because wolves don’t like to be confined or stuck in a big floating box. They had to hide what they were for fear of the humans on the boat with them as they all traveled to the new world. Mother was sick the whole time they traveled the seas. Once the boat made it my parents and a few other shifters disappeared into the forest nearby.
My parents found a small piece of land in a beautiful area. They cleared out the center and built a home and farm. Raising and growing their food. Soon they were selling some to the local humans. This helped them keep the land. Over the next five years, the father would hire and board other wolves that came near looking for a quiet life. In year six mother blessed my father with me, but sadly as things go on this time didn’t make it past my birth. Heartbroken but determined not to spoil my mother's memory he raised me the best he could.
Growing up I knew my father missed my mother he told me about her every day so that I would know her as well. I was lucky though my father never blamed me for my mother's death. Once when I asked him and he said “a child who just barely took a breath couldn’t harm a fly let alone kill someone. When the goddess needs you in her realm she brings you home. Besides I still have her here with me. You have her eyes and heart. Some of the things I loved most about her. So yes I lost my mate but she gave me you.” after that I never questioned if he blamed me even a little. He was just a little heartbroken and hanging on to raise me.
The humans close by had built the one-horse supply stop into a small town. A school was built just after their church. Father wanting us to blend in sent me to the school to learn a thing or two. Not only would this help us blend in it would create long-life friendships. Being that I’m a wolf I do tend to pick things up a lot faster than the humans would so to not draw attention I watched and acted like a human. Wolves like in the wild tend to live in packs. But we live on a small farm just father and I and from time to time a lone wolf looking for some work or passing through. After a while, the farm was doing so well a few of the wolves stayed as hired hands full time. Me going to school helped my father while I was not home.
One day a wolf family showed up looking for work and a place to live. They had nothing and had been traveling a long time. They were tired of always being on the move. They had a daughter my age. Mary. Father offered her father a farmhand job and the mother offered to work as a cook and housekeeper. The house had a few rooms father agreed to this and gave them rooms to use while here. Mary’s mother Betty was a wonderful cook. Mary was to start school with me the following week. I will admit I didn’t always make friends easily. I am stronger and faster than humans so I was always worried about hurting someone. This had me keeping to myself, but with Mary around, she knew about me and I knew about here there is no hiding from each other. Mary was way better at connecting to others. She made friends fast and that included me. Soon I had several friends. Most of the males didn’t have the hardworking lifestyle I did so they expected me to be stronger than them and that helped a lot.
Over the years Mary and I became best of friends. But she also made a friend in a new girl named Edith. Edith always smiled and flirted with me but I wasn’t interested in flings. I had known from day one what a blessing a mate is and vowed to wait for my mate. Mary had been taught the same lessons. But humans don’t have mates so don’t understand the waiting for one person to show up. Edith didn’t smell like the humans but we also knew she wasn’t a wolf but still she was nice enough. She and Mary became very close.
The more wolves that came to father for work and a safe place the more land and housing we needed. Father called them all in for a dinner one night. He had decided that if they all were planning to stay then we should just form a pack. This would be helpful for many reasons. First protection for every wolf here. Second mind links would be active to all members of the pack. Father came from a pack so he knows how helpful it can be. After long talks, they agreed. Father wants this to be fairly proposed a fight for the alpha title. Each male wanting to be alpha would fight for the title. Normally this would be a fight to the death but not this time. The first one to submit loses. They would do the same for the beta title as well. For the gamma and delta would be appointed by the alpha and beta. Father and the others wrote down all the rules and laws they remembered from other packs and ones they wished had been in other packs. Those who never had been in a pack helped to keep the pack still free when a rule seemed too strict.
To say that it happened in one night would be a lie it took months of talks and rewrites of everything before everyone agreed with it. Granted not everyone was happy with everything but everyone agreed with what was written. So the fight for alpha and beta would start.
