Chapter 9
Mary pov
Yesterday I was told that Jesse was last seen walking toward the woods. No one could tell me if he was mad or anything. Tim told me the last time he talked to him was when he brought the bucket with the chicken waste. The dinner with the frosts is tonight and our fathers will be home soon. This is so unlike Jesse. If you were to ask anyone here who the most responsible person here was they would all say, Jesse.
Jesse was the kind of person that would help anyone with anything all they had to do was ask. He was great with the pups along with the elders. So him being gone and telling no one where he was going is odd. When our fathers were fighting for the alpha title I had secretly hoped that Mr. Cambell would win. He and Jesse have been the best people we had met in a long time. We lived always on the run the fear of other wolves attacking us hunters and the humans. When father had run across Mr. Cambell one day looking for food for mother and it was the best day ever. He invited us to his farm for food. All the while father started talking to him about the area and if there was work. Father seeing that another wolf family had a permanent home in the area had decided to see if he might be able to settle close by himself. When Mr. Cambell offered his father a job mother soon spook up about working for room and board as well. Our fathers seemed to hit it off fast like long-lost friends.
Together they grew the farm to what it is now. There are many wolves here now helping run the farm and living a happy life. So if anyone deserved to be the leader of this new pack of wolves it was him. Jesse had been so nice in the beginning I thought it was a lie but no that is just the way he is. He will care about you unless you give him a reason to not.
Both of us have daily chores that have to be done. Jesse the suck-up he is always was up first and made sure his chores were done so that if anyone needed help he was there to lend a hand. Okay, not a suck-up just a morning person. On the other hand, I want to do that be up before the sun and having my daily stuff done as the sun rises in the sky. But my mind and body are always at war with each other and 100 percent of the time my body wins and I can't get out of bed. Jesse had tried helping me get out of bed a few times the last time I hit him so hard he had a black eye for a few days. So that ended that he said and I quote “you can't pay me enough. My life means more” and he ran from the room. Soon I’m laying half on the bed half on the floor I hear the mother yelling for me to get my bum down there now. No one messes with their mother she may be small but she runs this place.
“mother I can't find him anywhere I’m starting to worry this is not something Jesse would do even if he was mad. He was not in his special place. I don’t know where else to look.” I know panic has made its way into my voice but I can't help it Jesse is my first friend and my best friend. I secretly hope he's my mate. Pacing the kitchen as mother cooks I see her eyes go blank and soon Tim and tom are the best of the best wolves we have here besides Jesse and my fathers. “beta female you wanted to see us.” I hate when they talk at the same time it's creepy. “yes Jesse is missing I need you two to go look for him. He was last seen walking to the tree line alone after the alpha and beta left for the hunting run I sent them on.” they nodded and left. I hear the cracking of bones so I know they shifted. I waited a few minutes then went out and gathered their clothes. I'll wash them and hang them to dry.
Heading to the washing barrel I see the alpha and father break through the tree line. They are both carrying a huge elk. I can see from here they are both field dressed and ready for skinning and butchering. a few of the women come from the house and head to start breaking down the elk once they are hung on the hooks. They head towards the house smiling at me as they walk past.
As I Finnish hanging the clothes up I hear a roar from the house. I can feel the pain and anger deep inside me. That is a roar of a very upset alpha male. Soon all the men are coming from the fields. The only ones not here are Jesse tom and Tim. And from the look on the alpha's face, he knows that Jesse is missing.
“Does anyone here know where my son is?” not a word from any of them. “who was the last one to see my son?” a young male steps forward “I believe I was the last one, alpha, I seen him walking towards the south tree line just after you left yesterday afternoon,” he says to the alpha who is staring at him for a moment after he was done talking. The alpha nods to the kid who steps back with the others. “I want you all to head to the treeline and see if you can pick up his scent. Once you do you contact me right away,” he orders then turns and heads into the house. The men turn and head south.
