Chapter 10
The alpha wanted to go look for Jesse himself but the frost are due in just a few hours and things still need to be done. Someone had suggested a contract with them stating that they are not here to do evil or expose us. I have to admit I trust Edith but it's also a good backup just in case.
Father pulls me aside to talk about Jesse. “do you know where he went?” “no papa I swear I searched all over I even went to his alone place and he wasn’t there.” he nodded patted my shoulder and went inside. I wanted to go help find him but I had to be at this dinner. Edith is my friend so it's my responsibility to introduce her to the alpha and my family. I head into the kitchen to help my mother cook the food. The other she-wolves are breaking down the elks and getting the fire going to cook them. The thing about wolves is we eat a lot and I mean a lot. Three elks, a hog, four chickens, and a cow are being cooked for supper. The elk is not a normal part of supper but the rest is.
It soon was close to the frost coming so I was sent to meet them as the other men still had not arrived back yet. Alpha won't make them stay out too much longer tonight as they need to eat and rest as well. If they come back with no news tonight they will break into teams to search. Still worried about Jesse I make my way to the border. There are no trails to the main house as we don’t use the horses to go into town often. Soon I see Edith an older boy who I assume is her parents heading my way. “hello Edith.” “oh Mary I’m so excited.” she says as her father stops the wagon. “hope on up and we will get going.” her father says and I just stare. “oh Mary this is my mother father and older brother heat” “nice to meet you, Mr. And Mrs. Frost,” I say bowing my head slightly. They just stared at me. “come on up Mary let's get going I’m starving.” Edith says.
Climbing up I point the way to the main house. Once there he stops the wagon. Climbing down father and the alpha comes out. “alpha William and beta Michael this is Mr. And Mrs. Frost, Edith and heath.” I say to them they nod to me and I turn around to take the horses to the barn. Seeing Tim and tom back. I hand the wagon off to them and head back to the house. Edith was waiting for me when I returned “where is Jesse?” she asks. I smile at her cause I know like me she has a crush on him. “I don’t know he's been missing since yesterday.” I tell her “what? Tell me everything.” she demands so I tell her everything I know. Soon the men are coming from the treeline in only pants from shifting. This is a normal sight for me but not for Edith whose jaw dropped as they make their way towards us. “um why are they half-naked?” she stammers out to me. “they just got back from shifting. So just grabbed trousers.” I shrug not understanding. We are used to seeing each other in less dress than they are in now being wolves. When we shift back from wolves it's not like we have clothes on.
“Tim?” I say rushing to him in hopes he has news but he just shakes his head. Looking at Edith he raises his eyebrow at me “oh this is Edith frost.” he nods looking up at the door “would you go get the alpha for me?” rushing inside to get the alpha. Seeing me come in the stands from where he was sitting talking to the frost. Heading to me I turn to look outside he nods and heads out. Following him, I want to hear to. But it was like they had their new language cause I couldn’t understand what he was saying. I just knew it wasn’t good. Looking to where I left Edith she's just staring at them. Tim heads to the barn where he and tom stayed. And the alpha went back into the house. Dropping to the top stair my elbows on my knees. My head hanging low. I know they found nothing by the look on alpha's face. “so not good news I take it.?” shaking my head “he's been missing so long its not like him. All of a sudden she snaps her head to me than the woods. Without a word she rushes in the house. “father….. father” she is yelling looking for him. Soon he comes to the door looking at Edith making sure all is well. “Edith what is it?” he asks as he looks her around “you know that tracking spell you've been trying to teach me?” he nods “could it work to find someone not of our blood?” she asks out looking at him with hope “no why its a blood to blood spell should we get separated.” “then is there something you can use to find someone that's not of your blood just like I don’t know maybe anyone who may be missing?” “of course how do you think we keep from being found the hunters dear. Now what is this all about?” “my friend Jesse is missing and they can't find him could you?” she asks.
All of us snapped our eyes to him with hope. I watch as he thinks about it then nods “I will need something of his preferably something that has his essence on it or blood.” “would a blood relative's blood work?” Mr. Frost thinks over that looking around at what he can see of the farm. “with the right herbs yes I’m sure I can make it work. Vivian dear I need you and Edith to find the herbs you know the ones. Heath gathers the elements. Alpha do you know where to find the missing boy's family.” he asks. “I do Mr. Frost he is my son.” the alpha tells him. “your blood will make the spell stronger.”
Soon he is mixing things over a small fire. Dumping water dirt and other things in a stew pot. Soon he asks for the alpha's hand slicing the palm letting his blood drip into the bowl. The thick paste soon turns to look like a stew with the blood. The longer it cooks the darker it gets. Soon it's black. Then Mr. Frost slices his palm letting his blood drip into the pot. The contents turned a bright shiny silver color. The more he stirs the more it starts looking like a ball. Then he says some words I can't quite catch. The ball glows brightly and then floats from the pot. Shining like the moon. It floats over to the alpha circling him around and around. Then shoots to the south end of the farm. We all take off after it. In the dark, it's not hard to follow a glowing flying ball of light.
Taking us deeper into the trees and over our border. I start to lose my steam and start to slow. I keep pushing but I can't go any further. Mother falls back seeing feeling me stop. She comes back laying down and I climb on her back. She then heads back to the house. “no mother the other way please.” I beg but she just keeps heading back to the house. Getting back the frosts are sitting on the steps. “well?” Edith demanded “mother brought me back I couldn’t keep up with them. Yet once I get my wolf.” while I had been talking to Edith mother went to shift and dress. “Mary comes to help the alpha reminded me that Jesse has probably not eaten since yesterday midday.” rushing to the kitchen to help make something for Jesse to eat Edith helped as well. Edith keeps watching out the window looking for them to come back.
“he will be fine won't he Mary?” “of course he's strong.” looking at her I see how much she likes him now and wonders if I should tell her about mates and how Jesse is destined to be with a wolf. A while later I hear the sounds of wolves coming. “mother they are coming back” as I rush out Edith close behind. Stopping dead as I see the alpha with a limp Jesse slung over his back. My heart stops and Edith gasps.
