Chapter 31

Daniel pov

I have been running the border for about an hour when I see Isaac and Anthony rushing towards me. Shifting and putting my shorts on I head over to them “what's up guys?” I ask them when I make it to them. Neither one looks at me both sharing out across the border. “I don’t know alpha I just had a strong urge to come here. On the way, I saw Anthony heading this way too.” Isaac shrugging his shoulders. Anthony nods and takes a step closer to the edge. “something is coming. I can feel a pull coming from over there.” Anthony says pointing to the east of where we are standing. Linking the others to keep an eye out for anything. I have been around Bridget and aria long enough to know when one of the special wolves says something you listen. I also had a young wolf run to let Damien or Brendon know something is coming. One of them is usually up this early to take over the board patrol. We have four alpha on the pack lands right now so we have a rotating shift for us so that there is always an alpha on patrol. And with the new threat out there we have moved it so that two alphas are patrolling around the guards change overtimes. Leaving us less at risk of something happening during those times.

I had a few of the smaller wolves climb trees to keep watch over where we are. I am testing a strategy where we have smaller wolves more suited for speed and stealth scout and spy from up high as wolves usually don’t lookup. My thoughts are that if this works it leaves openings for the smaller wolves who want to be warriors but maybe just don’t have the power to be on the battlefield. On top of the stealth unit, I also have been having them train with weapons mostly silent ones as the gun power from guns can mess with our sense of smell. Throughout my shift, I will have a random wolf act as a rogue and try and sneak past us. Also, the long-range bow and arrows are loaded with paint arrows so the mark does not kill. This will help them with aim without hurting someone. They do carry real arrows as well just in case.

Just as I was starting to think the boys were just jumping I hear the bird whistle from deep in the trees. This tells me that someone saw something but they are not sure what they see. Means whatever it is, is staying in the dark shadows of the trees actively trying not to be seen. Before we could link with the four packs we set up a series of whistles to alert the others of things and it has stuck. We have found it a faster response to seeing something if we just whistle then we don’t have to keep an active link between everyone on patrol. Wolves can get chatty with an open link and bored and trying to make the last few hours of patrol go by faster.

I smell Brendon coming closer when both Isaac and Anthony take off over the border. Without thinking I took off after them knowing Brendon will follow. I hear one of our wolves yell from somewhere “stop where you are.” this has both boys running faster. It all happened so fast. One second the boys are running the next they are flying towards a small figure that seems to be half-dead running. The whistle of an arrow slicing through the air. With a loud grunting growl, they land on the figure, and the arrow in beads itself into one of their shoulders caucusing a painful howl. Both Brendon and I are pushing our alpha auras out calling for a stop. The wolf who shoot the arrow dropped from the tree she was in. Landing in front of me and Brendon with an arrow notched and at the ready. Linking for a medical team to head this way I can smell Isaac's blood filling the air. I place my hand on the young shes-wolfs shoulder letting her know to stand down.

Coming up to the pile I help Isaac to a sitting position his hands around the waist of a young girl. Anthony has her wrapped in his arms as well. Both boys have a tight hold on her. I start to ask if Isaac is okay when they both say at the same time “is she okay?” this is when I notice the girl is very underweight, dirty, and unconscious. “she's breathing that's all I can tell. I do have a medical team coming for Isaac so they can look at her too. Who is she?” I ask them even though I don’t really need to ask a wolf only risks their life for a stranger for one reason. Anthony places his hand on her cheek as Isaac's head falls to her shoulder “she's our mate” they both whisper.

The medical teams gets to us and I direct them to Isaac who at no surprise insists that they look at his mate first. They are not having it though between the two she is the less critical. Dr. Snow let him know that by saying “if she was the one looking like a kebab ready for the grill I would look at her first. Since she shows no sign of injury and is breathing fine she can wait.” she glares down at him. “now let go of her so I can fix your shoulder.” at that, I saw his whole body tense up and his arms tighten around her more. Anthony lays his hand on Isaac's arm looking him in the eye. After a moment they both nod and Isaac lets go. Anthony brings the small female into his lap holding her close to him. The way he is looking between her and his brother I can see nothing but concern for them both. Isaac and Anthony have developed a very strong bond at times it's like they can feel what the other is feeling. The way they now work together like they are one and how they seem to feel the other is something I want to test out. I had planned for tomorrow night when they are on patrol to have one on the southern border and the other on the north border and have one ambushed by a team acting as rogues. This will have to wait now there is no way I will get them away from her anytime soon.
