Chapter 6
‘Is this guy for real? Does he really think he is some kind of Vampire-Werewolf Hybrid?’ Jessica thought to herself. “Dude, did you bump your head or something? Do you guys think for real you are vampires and werewolves? “Jessica asked, standing up from the chair.
“You are a Werewolf yourself! You have a mental block on, perhaps go talk to your parents about it. Before you go, what is your surname? We need to un-mate,” Wynn pleaded.
Jessica, with a big smile on her face, decided to play his game. “So if fairy tales about werewolves are true, then that means you won’t hurt a hair on my body?”
“This is not some fairy-tale! Please let us un-mate!” Wynn begged again.
Jessica sat on Wynn’s lap facing him, and even though she had to admit that he kind of smelled irresistible and she just wanted to lean in and kiss him she kept her face away from him far enough because he was her best friend's boyfriend. Wynn wrapped his arms around her, overtaken by his wolf that has longed for a mate, and was about to kiss Jessica when she broke out of his tempting embrace. “In your dreams, lover boy.”
Unable to do any harm to Jessica, he watched her leave the classroom. Wynn stayed seated, hopeless.
Jessica quickly made her way to the Cafeteria to tell Ann how crazy her boyfriend and his friends were when they almost ran into her, coming around the corner. They all stopped in their tracks, looking at Jessica.
“Some crazy friends you made yourself, let us go. I have an assault to report! On my freaking birthday!” Jessica said, trying to lock her arm in with Ann. Jessica felt caught off guard when Ann rejected her.
“Jessica, please let us talk about it. Surely, they meant no harm,” Ann tried to calm her.
“Your boyfriend choked me till I passed out! And they believe they are Vampire-Werewolf Hybrids!” Jessica said, stepping back out of reach. Jessica wanted to say that Wynn claimed to be her werewolf mate, but doesn't want to hurt her best friend’s feelings. She saw that Ann was not at all surprised to hear what she was saying. “Oh, my word! Not you too?” Jessica asked, shocked that her best friend believed that she was a Vampire-Werewolf Hybrid. “You guys are nuts! I am out of here!” Jessica speedily made her way to the cafeteria before any of them can grab her again.
Wynn came out of the classroom, and they all just stared at him.
“Why did you let her go?!” Paris asked angrily.
Shysie recognized the lovesick puppy eyes. “Oh, boy.” Shysie was not happy about the new developments, knowing that Wynn will dump Ann without hesitation if he and Jessica didn't break the werewolf-mate bond.
“Can't you just compel her to forget? Why did you choke her?” Ann asked Wynn, not knowing him as the violent type.
Shysie took Ann by the arm. “Let us find a place to talk. You guys go ahead. Wynn, I’ve got this, don’t worry.”
“I’m not worried,” Wynn responded, having lost all feelings for Ann.
Ann gave a confused look at Wynn while Shysie walked with her arm locked in with hers.
“Wait, I want to know what is going on!” Ann protested, annoyed but felt she also wants to obey her new best friend, Shysie.
“Come, I will explain,” Shysie said, forcing Ann to sit on a nearby bench. Shysie gave the two guys a look, meaning for them to leave.
Paris and Wynn walked on. “What is going on? Why did you let her go?” Paris asked.
“When she came to it, my wolf side took over and mated us. I tried to reject her as my mate, but she didn’t want to give me her surname, and she thinks we are crazy.”
“Oh boy. What about Ann?” Paris asked, worried and kind of happy at the same time, wondering if Ann will be so heartbroken that she will give him a chance.
“What about her? All feelings lost the moment I mated with Jessica,” Wynn said, making his way to the cafeteria.
“I don’t think we should go after Jessica right now,” Paris tried to steer Wynn away.
“Don't you get it? I must reject her! The bond will just grow stronger until it is irreversible.”
“I did not know that,” Paris said. He knew that Ann will obviously know Jessica’s surname, but should he help Wynn?
On the bench, Shysie put a hand on Ann's shoulder. “You know that Wynn is a hybrid, and therefore the possibility for him to have a mate connection with another werewolf is always there. We believed that he must be in his werewolf form to be able to find a wolf mate connection again, but I guess we are wrong.”
“Can’t he just reject her? Like in the movies?” an un-happy, about to cry, Ann asked.
Shysie can see that Ann is holding back her tears, but had no intention of making it easier for Ann. Shysie holds Ann responsible for Paris being in love with her.
“Werewolves cannot be compelled, and Jessica is one with a mental block. You cannot accept Wynn loving anyone else,” Shysie compelled Ann to be even deeper in love with Wynn. The bell rang, and the break was over.
As the students made their way to class, Jessica went to the principal’s office. When she found that the principal was not there, she went to go have a look in the teacher's lounge. She found only Mr. Ondrink.
“Everything ok Jessica?” Mr. Ondrink asked, putting his cup of coffee down.
“Sir, two students attacked me. They think they are Vampire-Werewolf Hybrids and say that I am one!” Jessica informed him.
“Come take a seat,” Mr. Ondrink showed Jessica to take a seat across from him.
“I should get to class, sir,” Jessica said, still standing in the doorway.
Mr. Ondrink was unsure how to break the news to Jessica and decided that it can wait for after school.
“Ok, let’s go. Who are the students?” Mr. Ondrink asked, already having an idea.
“Wynn and Paris. It seems that Shysie and Ann also believe that they are Vampire-Werewolf Hybrids,” Jessica said, satisfied to get Mr. Ondrink to follow her to class.
Paris, Wynn, Shysie, and Ann were a bit worried when they did not see Jessica in class.
Ann kept on looking at Wynn, trying to get his attention. She cannot believe that the love of her life just fell out of love in a blink of an eye. Wynn did not notice Ann; all he could think of was how to break the mate bond with Jessica.
The classroom door opened. “Miss Steel, just because it is your birthday, does not mean you get longer breaks,” the Geography teacher said, annoyed-looking over her glasses at Jessica.
“Paris, Wynn, and Shysie, please come with me,” Mr. Ondrink pointed at the three students.
“And Ann,” Jessica quickly threw in Ann’s name.
Ann gave a look of shock at Jessica, not believing that her so-called best friend did just throw her under the bus. Ann wondered if Jessica really does not know that she was a Werewolf and deliberately stole her boyfriend. Ann gave a disgusted look at Jessica and made her way out of the classroom.
“You can continue the class. These students are suspended and won’t return today,” Mr. Ondrink said, leaving the classroom.
“You guys were warned that if you do any harm in this town, I will contact the council and inform them of your whereabouts. Where is Dario? Your nest has 24hours to leave the town,” Mr. Ondrink said.
Paris took out his phone and started dialing Dario, but he only got a voicemail. “Dario, call me back when you get this. We have 24 hours to leave town.” Paris left a voice message.
The three Vampires left with Vampire speed, leaving Ann behind. Mr. Ondrink gave Ann a concerned look and wondered if the Vampire has been feeding on her and she on them, and just how much she knew. He thought of how much her grades have dropped these past weeks and thought that if she had been drinking from them her grades would not have dropped, as vampire blood enhances all human cells, including making the neuropathy better. He gave Ann a frown. “Follow me.”
“Sir, I didn’t do anything wrong,” Ann said, worried that she was suspended for real. She really wanted to catch up with Wynn right now.
“So, you know they are Vampires and Wynn is a Hybrid?” Mr. Ondrink asked as they walk beside each other down the hallway.
“Yes,” Ann said, noticing that they were on their way out of the school building.
“Do they drink from you?” Mr. Ondrink asked, hoping to get a ‘no’.”
“Only Wynn, he is my boyfriend, so I don't mind,.. I mean, was my boyfriend. Out of the blue, he dumped me! You don’t seem surprised by all of this,” Ann said, stating her observation of Mr. Ondrink.
“I am a Shaman. Well, I am also a Werewolf. I am just over 1100 years old,” Mr. Ondrink said, waiting for a reaction from Ann that does not come.
“A while back, I research for a shaman to get help so that the Vampires cannot compel me, but all I found was that the last real shaman died 500 years ago,” Ann said.
“That is what we want humans to believe,” Mr. Ondrink opened the school door.
They walked in silence for a minute and Ann realized they were walking toward Mr.Ondrinks car.
“Sir, I can call a taxi and find my own way home, “Ann said, standing still.
“We are not going home. I want to show you something,” he opened the car door.
Ann looked uncertain.
“You hang out with vampires; your boyfriend is a Hybrid, and you are scared to get into a car with your trusted teacher of almost five years?” Mr. Ondrink questioned.
Ann got into his classic 1936 Ford Two door. Ann was surprised that the car started like a beast with no problems whatsoever. “How does this car even still drive in Alaska, of all places?”
“She has her good days and her bad days, but mostly she runs on magic,” Mr. Ondrink laughed.
“Have you drunk from them?” Mr. Ondrink did not think that she did, but had to ask. He was too curious to wait until he can use his magic to see for himself.
“No. Yes, once, weeks ago from Paris,” she answered.
“I see,” Mr.Ondrink said, paying little attention to the road.
“Why? Does it matter? Don’t worry, they never offered to make me a vampire,” Ann said, wondering why Wynn never talked about it.
“It is not that easy to become a vampire,” Mr. Ondrink said, turning into his driveway.
“How do you become a vampire?” Ann asked, interested.
“By drinking a Vampire to death, “Mr. Ondrink said, getting out of his car. Ann got out as well and followed him. At his doorstep, Dario waited for Mr. Ondrink.
“You and your nest have 24hrs to get out of town. I will be informing the council tomorrow this time about your whereabouts,” Mr. Ondrink said, about to walk Dario out of the way. Dario, not wanting to get burnt, stepped out of his way.
“No, need. I just came from them. Spent the weekend there and they will allow me a hearing to prove my ‘nest’ innocence. I am returning to the council after sorting out the mess at hand with Paris and Wynn,” Dario said.
Mr. Ondrink stopped and turned around. “You still have only 24 hours to get out. I am putting a protective spell over the town, no vampire will ever be able to enter it again!”
“Wait, a minute! Let us talk it through. Please,” Dario tried to reason with Mr. Ondrink.
“Come Ann, let me get you cleared of all compelling bounds,” Mr. Ondrink left Dario at the door. The moment Mr. Ondrink stepped into his house, his appearance changed from a 50-year-old man to that of a 70-year-old. Ann gasped, “what just happen?”
“It is just a spell. I change my appearance every 30 to 40 years so that I can stay in the town. But in my own house, I can just be me. After I lost my mate, I did not want to be alive anymore and stopped changing into my wolf form for many years and got old. But then more and more vampires showed up, and I decided to stay alive a bit longer. I am also in charge of keeping your friend Jessica out of harm’s way,” Mr. Ondrink showed Ann to take a seat. He looked around on his shelf and then drawers, mumbling to himself.
“Jessica?” Ann asked, confused.
“Yes, she is born a Werewolf and her parents gave her up to come live a peaceful life as a normal person,” Mr. Ondrink said, still searching for something.
“I didn’t know she was adopted,” Ann stated, shocked at the news.
“Neither does her human parents. Her human parents had a miscarriage, and we swopped the two newborns out, after putting a mental block and a Werewolf Lycan spirit over her,” Mr. Ondrink said. He finally found what he was looking for.
“Now keep quiet, I need to concentrate,” Mr. Ondrink started to mix some things together on a hand size stone that looked like a bowl.
Ann's mind was raising with questions regarding Jessica, but she kept silent.
“I will be right back,” Mr. Ondrink left the spice mixture on the table and left the room to change into his Shaman attire. He never thought that he will have to mix a spell in his lifetime again and thought he will be long dead by the time Jessica turned eighteen and didn’t bother to keep any special pre-mix and ready-to-use Shaman things around.
Ann looked around the room for the first time. It had several potted plants hanging in front of the large window. A cluttered bookshelf that stretches from ceiling to floor and across from wall to wall.
The bookshelf had glass bottles filled with different color liquids placed between stacked books that looked incredibly old and weathered. Ann even noticed some feathers, strings, and different size stones here and there on the shelves.
Mr. Ondrink returned wearing a Warbonnet (traditional headdress) that appeared to be made from Snow Owl feathers. Ann recognized the feathers as she did an essay on Snow Owls last year. Mr. Ondrinks' face was painted white, and he wore a pant that looked like animal skin shaved off their white hair and hand-sewn together. He wore a matching loose-fitting robe. His hands and feet were also painted white. He had a woven rolled-up matt in his hands and signaled Ann to join him in the center of the room.
He threw the weaved matt open onto the floor and told Ann to sit. Ann did as she was told but found it highly amusing and entertaining to experience a real-life shaman doing his thing.
“Try to remember the hymning. If you do, you can remove compelled bounds yourself,” Mr. Ondrink said.
He started the hymning, “hmm, hmmmm-mu, hmm, hmm, hmmmm-mu,” he repeated it several times as he sprinkled the crushed spice over Ann. Every time he repeated the hymning, Ann heard and felt a compelling bound lift.
“You may stop,” Ann said after a while of no compelling bounds.
Mr. Ondrink stopped and opened his eyes to find a teary-eyed Ann in front of him.
Mr. Ondrink took the leftover mixed spices and placed them in a small container that looks like it’s been carved out of wood. He sealed it and string some rope and stone beats together.
“Here, carry this with you, if you suspect you have been compelled, then hum the hymning and the compelling should be lifted.” He handed the necklace to Ann.
