Chapter 109
John finally hit Sylvester's number. Sylvester was knee-deep in a meeting. Lately, he'd been grinding hard, often stuck in meetings way past bedtime.
"We could try another approach; the client might find it more acceptable." Before he could finish, his phone buzzed, throwing him off track.
The folks in the room didn't show it, but getting interrupted sucked. So, Sylvester hung up and kept talking.
Michael shot a look at the flustered John and asked, "He didn't pick up?"
John shook his head. Michael pulled out his own phone. "Guess I gotta handle this myself."
Just as Sylvester was hitting his stride, Michael's call came through. Michael was always cool and collected, and since John had just called, he wouldn't be blowing up Sylvester's phone unless it was a big deal.
When Sylvester picked up, he found out Calliope had been kidnapped. He shot up from his seat and bolted out of the room, leaving everyone else scratching their heads.
With a serious look, Sylvester asked, "Any leads?"
Michael stayed calm. "We'll talk when you get here."
Even though Sylvester had beef with John, he had mad respect for Michael, knowing he never spilled the beans over the phone. He sped over to the Moore Manor, finding the place buzzing with activity, realizing how serious things were.
"What's going on?" he asked Michael, feeling a knot in his stomach. Even though he once wished Calliope would vanish, now he was freaking out.
Michael played a news clip. The local media was on it, reporting every detail, including a close-up of the bracelet.
"Did you call the cops?" Sylvester asked urgently.
"Yeah, they're on it. But before they get here, Calliope might..." John trailed off, but they all knew what he meant.
Sylvester glared at John. "This is all on you! You caused my mom's death, and now Calliope's in danger because of your past! I should've fed her body to the wolves back then! If she comes back to haunt Calliope, I'll show her how deep my hate runs!"
John opened his mouth but stayed silent. It was his fault. If it weren't for his past, their family might've been happy. The Moore family staff had no clue about the past because the family had buried it deep.
"Enough! We need to save Calliope! She's carrying the Moore family's child!" Michael cut in, glaring at John, his blame clear.
If he could do it over, John would never make the same mistakes. Now, he had to take Sylvester's anger and Michael's scolding. If it weren't for his past, Sylvester wouldn't be in danger, and Faith wouldn't have left him.
Sylvester shot John a fierce look and stormed out. The cops had the place taped off, but a crowd had gathered, gossiping about Calliope's disappearance and her pregnancy.
If anyone was happy about this, it was Nina. She secretly hoped Calliope would vanish so Sylvester would come back to her.
Nina, who had shown up at the scene, was heavily disguised, but the media still spotted her. The cameras turned on her instantly. She tried to slip away but bumped into someone. Looking up, she saw the anxious Sylvester. Thinking he was there for her, Nina leaned into his arms. "Sylvester, I'm so scared."
Sylvester recognized Nina but, with his mind on Calliope, gently pushed her away and quickly walked to the cops. Nina stared in shock at Sylvester's retreating figure, her emotions all over the place. 'He actually pushed me away?'
The media wouldn't miss this. A reporter shouted, "Got it! The shot of Nina being pushed away! This is gold!"
Facing the media frenzy, Nina's eyes darkened. She tried to escape but was surrounded, microphones in her face. A reporter asked, "How do you feel about Sylvester pushing you away? Did you come here to watch the drama?"
Some were even more blunt, making Nina feel both ashamed and angry. "How do you feel about breaking up families?"
Finally finding a chance to slip away, her hair a mess, she couldn't shake the image of Sylvester pushing her away from her mind. Sylvester rushed to the cops and urgently asked, "Any news?"
