Chapter 111

Calliope shook her head, looking confused. "I don't know. I woke up next to this tombstone with a splitting headache and no memory of how I got here." She rubbed her temples, wincing in pain.

"Alright, let's get you back to the station to make a statement. We need to figure out what happened," a nearby cop said, breaking the subtle eye contact between the two.

At the station, Calliope was a blank slate. Talking about the incident only made her headache worse. The cops were stumped and turned to John for any leads.

John asked, "Did you find anything?"

The cops all shook their heads. "Calliope doesn't remember a thing, not even what the person looked like. This makes our job really tough. Plus, everyone who's come into contact with the suspect can't describe them. Even your bodyguards, who saw the suspect up close, can't recall any features. We usually don't buy into this kind of stuff, but this case is really weird."

The cops, looking worried, explained that this was the biggest mystery they'd faced. For the past three years, there had been similar reports, all involving the same person and methods. Calliope was the only one who'd escaped unharmed.

All the other victims were connected to Sylvester. Why the suspect spared Calliope was a mystery, but at least she was alive.

"Finding the real culprit is your job. Stop wasting time on irrelevant stuff, got it?" John snapped, clearly frustrated with the police.

This mystery had haunted the Moore family for a long time. Catching the real culprit was their top priority, as the hidden enemy made them constantly uneasy.

Meanwhile, Sylvester pulled Calliope aside. Even when apologizing, Sylvester kept his cold demeanor. "I should've been there for your check-up, but what you did was really out of line."

Calliope glared at him. "How many times do I have to say it? I didn't do that. If you keep blaming me, there's nothing I can do. I'm done explaining."

Sylvester wanted to argue but held back, considering she'd just been through a lot. "It's getting dark, let's go home," Sylvester said impatiently.

Calliope glanced at John, who was still talking to the cops. Was it really okay to leave him behind? Before she could say anything, Sylvester had already pulled her into the car.

When John realized what was happening, Sylvester and Calliope were already gone, leaving him feeling ignored. Noticing John's awkwardness, the cops made excuses to leave, letting John be. John took the chance to leave as well.

In the car, Calliope couldn't help but ask, "Where are Jenny and the bodyguards?"

Sylvester's eyes were calm, showing no emotion. "They made mistakes and have been dismissed."

Calliope looked at Sylvester in surprise. She hadn't expected her disappearance to cost so many people their jobs.

"Don't do this. They've served the Moore family for years. You can't just fire them. Besides, I'm safe now. There's no need to make such a big deal out of it. I'm used to Jenny's care," Calliope pleaded. She knew how tough unemployment could be, and it wasn't their fault.

"The Moore family doesn't tolerate incompetence. This is Grandpa's decision. If you have any issues, take it up with him. It's out of my hands," Sylvester said, eyes fixed on the road.

"If I mess up after having the baby, will the Moore family kick me out too?" Calliope was fed up with the Moore family's strict rules. She made a mental note to talk to Michael when they got home to keep Jenny and the others. If that didn't work, she'd fake a stomachache. No way Michael would say no to that!

"Don't talk while I'm driving!" Sylvester snapped. Calliope shot him a glare but kept quiet.

Back home, the table was loaded with soups and delicious dishes, making her feel warm and full. She had to admit, the Moore family knew how to eat.

After stuffing herself, she went to find John, saying she wanted to see Michael. Even though she'd been around for a while, she'd only met Michael a few times. He always seemed energetic and commanded respect without even trying.

John looked puzzled. "Why do you want to see him?"

"I just want Jenny and the others to stay," Calliope said bluntly, her big, lively eyes fixed on John.

John thought for a moment, then passed on her request to Michael, who agreed right away.

When she saw Michael, Calliope got straight to the point. "Grandpa, I heard you plan to fire Jenny and the others."

Michael was lounging in a wicker chair with his eyes closed. Without opening them, he said, "Yes, that's the rule. They messed up big time. If we don't punish them, people will think the Moore family has no standards."

Calliope's eyes darted around, and she quickly walked over to Michael, flashing a bright smile. "Grandpa, I don't think so. If you forgive them, they'll be grateful, and people will praise you for being generous. Plus, I'm really used to Jenny taking care of me."

Michael opened his eyes, a hint of worry in his gaze. "But rules are rules. They are responsible for this incident. The punishment stands."

Calliope pouted and gently shook Michael's hand. "Grandpa, for the sake of your unborn grandchild, please forgive them."

Michael looked at her with a smile. "Calliope, you're the only one who's ever acted spoiled with me. John avoids me, and Sylvester is always respectful. Only you dare to be so close." Michael laughed heartily. It had been a long time since someone had been so endearing towards him.

"You're so kind. Why can't I act spoiled?" Calliope had figured out Michael's temperament, so she dared to be so close.

"You actually think I'm kind." Michael stroked his white beard, laughing heartily, a long-lost sense of happiness welling up.

"Since you're so kind, shouldn't you forgive Jenny and the bodyguards this time?" Calliope still clung to Michael's sleeve.

Michael couldn't resist her. "Alright, alright, I'll do as you say."

Hearing this, Calliope was very happy, her face lighting up with excitement. "I'll go tell Jenny and the others they don't have to leave. Thank you, Grandpa."

After leaving, Calliope let out a sigh of relief. She had no elders at home, and this was her first time dealing with an older person. Online rumors said they favored affectionate younger ones, and it turned out to be true.
