Chapter 128
John's eyes widened in shock. A ten percent success rate for the surgery. How was that any different from not doing it at all? Wasn't this just sending him to his death? But if they gave up on the surgery, wouldn't Sylvester just be waiting to die?
Nearby, Calliope collapsed upon hearing the news. It felt like her heart had sunk into an abyss. Could Sylvester really be leaving her?
At that moment, her phone rang. Distracted, she answered it, only to be plunged into despair once again by the news on the other end. She turned and hurried towards David's hospital room.
David had also received a critical condition notice, and Calliope felt as if her entire world was collapsing. This was a double blow!
Just as she reached David's ward, Tom suddenly rushed out, yelling at her, "You selfish woman! There was a suitable heart donor before, why didn't you give it to my son? How could you be so heartless? You have so much money, can't you come up with this $200,000?"
"Believe it or not, I don't have any money right now! When you were gambling so recklessly, did you ever think that one day your own son would need life-saving money? He is your biological son!" Calliope was exhausted from dealing with everything.
She thought again of Sylvester's pale face, his handsome features devoid of any color, lying quietly in bed as if he were just asleep. She felt a wave of helplessness.
"No matter what, it's your responsibility to save him! I raised you for so many years, now you must find a way to get the money! Go!" Tom's aggressive demeanor made people want to punch him hard!
It wasn't until evening that David slowly woke up, his face still pale and weak. The machine beside him recorded his fragile heartbeat, giving the constant impression that it could stop at any moment.
"Calliope," he called her name softly, his voice barely a whisper.
Calliope looked at him in surprise, and once she confirmed he was awake, she excitedly held his hand. "David, you're awake!"
David nodded weakly, now wearing an oxygen mask, finding it incredibly difficult to move even a little.
"Calliope, have you been crying?" he asked.
Tears welled up in Calliope's eyes, and she quickly looked up to keep them from falling. She had never thought David would leave her; he had always been her protector, like a knight in shining armor, but now she had to face this harsh reality.
"No, I just didn't sleep well last night. My eyes are just tired," Calliope replied.
"Calliope, don't cry. Remember when we were kids, I told you not to cry so easily? This might be the last time I remind you, but you must take good care of yourself. I have nothing to worry about except you. When you encounter trouble in the future, protect yourself well, Promise me, okay?" David held Calliope's hand, a hint of a forlorn smile on his face.
Calliope looked at him in disbelief. Did he really care about her? Did he understand her inner emotions?
"Be good, Calliope. Go back now. Don't let Sylvester find out, he will bully you." Before David could finish, he fell into a deep sleep.
Calliope hurriedly called for the doctor, and the medical staff began resuscitation. After the procedure, she anxiously asked, "Is he okay?"
The doctor sighed. "It's a miracle he's held on this long. His heart failure is severe, he might not have much time left."
Hearing this, Tom panicked. He couldn't bear the thought of losing his son. The only ones he could turn to now were the Moore family!
Tom suddenly stood up and walked towards the ICU where Sylvester was, intending to find John for help.
John felt a surge of irritation seeing Tom storming in. "Who are you?"
Tom was straightforward. "It doesn't matter who I am! You have to pay to save my son!"
It was the first time John had seen someone so brazenly demanding money without even a greeting. He signaled the butler to throw this madman out.
As Tom was being dragged away, he shouted, "My son and your son are half-brothers! How can you let him die?"
John froze, then turned back and roared, "Shut up! Don't you dare slander Faith! Get out!"
Hiding in the corner, Calliope's eyes widened. She believed Tom's words because he was never this serious about anyone else.
Her heart raced, and she leaned against the cold wall, looking down at her belly. David was actually Sylvester's half-brother, and she was pregnant with Sylvester's child. What was going on?
A sense of inexplicable fear surged in her heart, and she couldn't calm down for a long time.
After a long while, Calliope staggered into David's ward. From the doorway, David's face looked terrifyingly pale as he lay in bed, barely showing any signs of life. Seeing him like this made Calliope feel as if her heart was being torn apart.
No, she couldn't bear to watch David and Sylvester fall one by one, even if it meant resorting to every every possible means. The terrible thought that had flashed through her mind reappeared.
At that moment, David's body suddenly began to convulse violently, his breathing rapid. Calliope was terrified and rushed in, shouting, "David, David, what's wrong?"
David finally regained normal breathing, opened his eyes, and smiled weakly. "Calliope, go back and rest. You're pregnant now. You need to take good care of yourself."
Hearing this, Calliope burst into tears. "David, no, I want to stay with you."
