Chapter 72
The next morning, just as the first light of dawn peeked through, Calliope quietly changed her clothes, ready to head to the hospital alone for a check-up.
But as soon as she stepped out of Moore manor, her phone buzzed. Sylvester's name flashed on the screen. She hesitated but picked up. His slightly annoyed voice came through, "Where are you going?"
How did he know she was leaving?
Calliope glanced back at the big floor-to-ceiling window. There was Sylvester, one hand in his pocket, staring right at her.
"Just going to the hospital to see a friend," she lied smoothly, like she was up for an Oscar. But Sylvester wasn't buying it. "I'll go with you. I need to head to the office anyway."
Panic flickered in her heart. "No need, I can go by myself."
"It's on the way. Let's go," Sylvester said, hanging up before she could argue.
Listening to the dial tone, Calliope's face darkened. What a pain!
In the end, she got into Sylvester's car, heading towards City Center Medical Center. The moment the car stopped, her heart seemed to stop too.
"I'll head in first. Have a good day at work," she joked lightly. Sylvester reached out, gently stroking her long hair, his tone affectionate. "You're being too naggy. Want to be my personal secretary?"
"You guessed it!"
"Then I approve."
Anyone overhearing would think they were a couple in love, but they'd only known each other for just over a month.
Calliope got out of the car with a smile, waved as it drove off, and then her smile faded.
Suddenly, a hand landed on her shoulder. Turning around, her heart filled with anger. That lecherous voice and smile could only belong to Tom.
Calliope didn't want to say a word to Tom. "Stay away from me. Just looking at you makes me sick." She hurried into the hospital, but Tom grabbed her wrist. "Calliope, no wonder you haven't come home. You've been living it up. Do you know how your mom and I have been living? If you have money, why don't you give us some!"
Calliope struggled to break free. "Let go! If you keep bothering me, I'll call the police! Get lost!" She shook off Tom's hand and rushed into the hospital.
Tom watched her go, sneering. "Fine. I got the license plate number. I'll find you myself! So rich, driving such a nice car, and you don't feel guilty not giving me some money? Raising you all these years was a waste!"
Only after confirming that Tom hadn't followed her did Calliope relax a bit. She registered for a pregnancy check-up and joined the long queue, silently praying, 'Please don't be pregnant, please don't be.'
After two days of shooting underwater scenes, Nina ended up in the hospital with a nasty cold, hooked up to an IV drip. Her agent and assistant flanked her, making sure she was bundled up tight to avoid being recognized.
She'd called Sylvester a million times, but no answer. Could he have left his phone somewhere? No way. He was definitely ignoring her on purpose.
Nina was fuming, both from the cold and frustration. As she passed the OB-GYN department, she spotted a familiar figure in the crowd.
"Nina, what's up?" her agent asked, noticing her stop.
Nina stared hard at the figure in the queue. Calliope? What was she doing in the OB-GYN department? Her face twisted in shock. Could Calliope be pregnant? Why else would she be here?
"Calliope!" a nurse called out, snapping Calliope out of her half-asleep state. She got up and went into the exam room.
Nina clenched her fists in anger. Pregnant or not, if she didn't act soon, it would happen eventually! Sylvester was so into Calliope now. If she didn't do something, she'd lose him for good. But Sylvester was ignoring her. What should she do?
"Doctor, what's the result? Am I pregnant?" Calliope asked anxiously, a mix of hope and fear in her voice. The doctor reviewed the test results and said, "You're not pregnant. Your delayed period is likely due to hormonal imbalance. Just take care of yourself, and you should be fine with some rest."
"Not pregnant?" Calliope's worries melted away, and a smile spread across her face. What a relief.
She left the doctor's office with the test results, tossing the prescription into the trash.
A few steps later, someone blocked her path. She looked up to see Nina!
Once a top-tier star she admired on screen, now standing before her as an adversary.
"What are you doing here?" Nina asked bluntly, her main concern clear.
Calliope glanced at the OB-GYN sign, a faint smile playing on her lips. Seeing Nina's nervous expression, she decided to play along. "What do you think? Of course, I'm here for a pregnancy check-up."
"You." Nina's face grew more tense, but before she could say more, Calliope cut her off. "Be happy for Sylvester. He's going to be a dad."
"What?" Nina's face was a mix of shock and disbelief. Sylvester's child with someone else?
Calliope feigned innocence. "I'm pregnant."
The hallway fell eerily silent, as if one could hear Nina's heart shattering. Her eyes blazed with fury as she shouted at Calliope, "You don't deserve to have his child! Never!"
