Chapter 150
Since David was rescued, Calliope had been deeply immersed in self-blame every day. Whenever she closed her eyes to sleep, she would dream of Sylvester's ferocious face and the way he tightly gripped her throat. Every time she recalled what she had done to Sylvester, Calliope felt extremely guilty. It was only when she saw Sylvester again and confirmed he was safe that her guilt slightly lessened. But after learning more from Lucas, those painful memories surged back like a tide.
This incident taught her a lesson: in life, one must never do evil, as some mistakes, once made, can never be undone. From then on, she became more cautious in her actions and learned to distinguish between what should and shouldn't be done.
Late at night, when Sylvester returned home, he happened to see Jenny tidying up. "Mr. Sylvester Moore, Mrs. Moore is already asleep," Jenny whispered to him. Sylvester nodded slightly and turned towards his room.
Suddenly, he heard shouting from the room: "Go away! Don't come near me!" "Let go of me!"
Sylvester immediately rushed in, thinking it was Zoey. He pushed open the door to see Calliope sitting on the bed, drenched in sweat, with tear stains still on her face.
"What happened?" Sylvester asked urgently, looking around but finding nothing unusual.
Seeing Sylvester in front of her, Calliope felt like she had seen a savior and threw herself into his arms. "Sylvester," she said with a choked voice, "I'm so glad you're okay, so glad you're alive." Tears welled up in her eyes, and at that moment, she spoke from the bottom of her heart.
Sylvester noticed her constant trembling and wondered what kind of nightmare could have scared her so much.
After comforting her for a while and seeing Calliope's emotions stabilize a bit, Sylvester was about to turn on the bedside lamp. "Don't turn on the light," Calliope quickly stopped him, not wanting Sylvester to see the tear stains and fear on her face.
In the darkness, Calliope began to speak: "Ever since I heard about your 'death' that night, I've been tormented by the same nightmare. I dreamt of you lying on the operating table, covered in blood, with a terrible wound on your chest. No matter how others called out, there was no response. But when I inadvertently got close to you, you would suddenly wake up and grab my neck."
After saying all this in one breath, Calliope felt much lighter. Sylvester, on the other hand, was deeply moved: Could it be that deep down, she didn't want me to leave?
He held her tightly and softly said, "So, deep down, you actually don't want to lose me?"
Calliope released the hug, gently turned on the bedside lamp, and looked directly into his eyes, saying, "When I signed the organ donation papers for David, I didn't think much about it. But when I later heard the news of your death, I was really very sad. That period was harder to bear than any nightmare."
The air seemed to freeze, so quiet that even the sound of breathing was clearly audible.
At this moment, the tenderness almost melted all the barriers between them. "Don't worry, from now on, I'll sleep with you and won't let you be troubled by nightmares anymore," Sylvester's gentle words softly soothed the wounds in Calliope's heart.
Despite such sweet words being incredibly moving, reason told her this was just a fleeting moment of happiness, and perhaps everything would eventually disappear like a bubble.
The next morning, Calliope had a rare good sleep. When she woke up, she found the quilt beside her was lifted. Thinking back to last night, she wondered: Could it be that he stayed with her all night?
Impossible! Sylvester hated her to the core; how could he have stayed with her all night?
Calliope smiled bitterly, shook her head, changed her clothes, and went downstairs. Seeing that Jenny had only set one set of tableware, she asked, "Where's Sylvester?"
Jenny came out of the kitchen, carrying dishes, and said, "Mrs. Moore, Mr. Sylvester Moore has gone abroad. He said there were some company matters to handle, and he went with Mr. John Moore and Mr. Michael Moore." Jenny said this with a noticeable smile on her face.
"I see," Calliope nodded and sat down to eat. But she couldn't help but be curious, "Why are you so happy? Did something happen?"
Just then, Ava walked in, beaming, and said, "Mrs. Moore, congratulations on reconciling with Mr. Sylvester Moore!"
What? Reconcile?
Calliope almost spat out her soup. She hadn't even seen Sylvester this morning, so where did this reconciliation come from? Last night didn't count either; Sylvester had just comforted her a bit. The issues between them weren't so easily resolved, and their relationship hadn't been that good before.
But seeing Jenny and Ava's rare smiles these days, Calliope didn't say anything, shook her head helplessly, and continued eating.
For some reason, she felt particularly good today, perhaps because she had spoken some heartfelt words last night. After breakfast, she even asked Jenny and Ava to accompany her for a walk in the garden.
She lived quite a leisurely life, taking walks, watering flowers, reading books, and occasionally joking with Jenny and Ava. The previous unhappiness was all forgotten.
But good days are always so short. That evening, just after drinking milk and preparing to sleep, Calliope suddenly heard a commotion downstairs, mixed with Mia's drunken words.
Calliope frowned, got out of bed, and called Jenny: "What's going on downstairs? What's Mia causing a fuss about?"
Jenny whispered, "Mrs. Moore, Miss Moore is drunk and brought a man back."
"What! She brought a man back?" Calliope was instantly furious and went downstairs with Jenny.
Sure enough, Mia was dead drunk, limply clinging to a man. The man looked quite decent.
Seeing Calliope come down, Mia drunkenly laughed, "This is my brother's wife, Sylvester's wife, but let me tell you, Sylvester doesn't love her at all. He only married her to have a child. The funniest thing is, this woman is still clinging to our family and won't leave!"
Calliope was burning with anger but didn't want to argue with her too much. She coldly said, "Get him out of here. The Moore manor isn't a place for just anyone to come in."
The man, seeing Calliope's large belly, provocatively said, "You're just carrying the Moore family's child. You're an outsider who got into the Moore manor, so why can't I?"
