Chapter 117
Nina pulled Mia aside, signaling her to keep it down, and said, "Mia, come on, why would I hurt you? I didn't do anything. We're on the same team, remember?"
Even though Mia didn't think Nina had done anything directly, she still felt something was off, like Nina had orchestrated the whole thing.
She remembered it was Nina who told her Calliope was by the lake and said a bunch of other stuff that made her go after Calliope.
"You really didn't set me up?" Mia asked, eyeing Nina suspiciously.
Nina nodded firmly. "I swear, I didn't set you up. We're friends, why would I do that? Right now, no one knows what happened except us. If Calliope doesn't wake up, just say it had nothing to do with you. If she does wake up, you can pay them off to keep quiet. Even if Calliope blames you, you can deny it and say she's lying."
Mia thought Nina had a point.
Mia frowned at Nina. "But Jenny is super loyal to Calliope. If we try to bribe her, will she go for it?"
Nina rolled her eyes. Mia was so naive. No wonder she was getting played without even knowing it.
"Think about it, would she risk everything for someone who might never wake up? Even if Calliope wakes up, we can still threaten her. She'll definitely agree." Nina smirked. After years in the entertainment industry, she had gotten pretty good at this.
Mia was still unsure and stammered, "Will this really work?" She was arrogant, but she had never done anything this bad before, and she was naturally worried about her first time.
Nina pressed on, "You know how important the baby in Calliope's belly is to the Moore family. If something happens to the baby, you can imagine the punishment you'll face. Even if both she and the baby are fine, you won't escape punishment. So, you might as well go all in."
Hearing Nina stress the consequences, Mia finally made up her mind. Since she was going to be punished anyway, she might as well take a chance.
"Come over here," she called to the three people by the lake. Calliope had only brought Jenny, and the gardener and cleaner could be easily swayed.
Jenny, though clearly unhappy, walked over with a scowl. Being called over at this time was definitely not a good sign, but as a servant, she had to obey.
"If anyone asks about what happened just now, you all have to say that Mrs. Moore fell in by herself, got it?" Mia said sternly, looking directly at Jenny, not trusting her one bit.
"Ms. Mia Moore, you should be honest," Jenny snapped, not expecting Mia to cover up the truth.
"Don't forget you're just a servant. What right do you have to talk to Mia like that? You're a servant of the Moore family, not the Gray family," Nina chimed in from nearby. She had long been annoyed with Jenny for messing up her plans and was happy to take the chance to put her in her place.
With Nina backing her up, Mia felt a surge of confidence. She took a deep breath and followed Nina's lead.
"Jenny, I know you've done a lot for the Moore family, but don't stick with someone who has no future. Calliope's situation is up in the air, and you need to think about your own future. There are some people you just can't afford to cross." Mia was nervous about Calliope's condition, but she tried to sound confident.
Jenny stayed silent. She knew that as a servant, she had no real power to fight back. It would be fine if Calliope was okay, but now things were uncertain, especially with Lucas involved.
Nina nudged Mia, and Mia took the hint. "Have you thought it through? Don't make an enemy out of me for the wrong reasons. Remember, the Moore family is powerful. Making someone's life difficult is a piece of cake for us."
"I wasn't there at the time, I don't know anything. I just ran into you when you were taking Mrs. Moore to see Dr. Williams," Jenny said, trying to play dumb. She wasn't about to lie and say Calliope fell by herself, so she pretended to know nothing.
Nina and Mia exchanged a knowing look and then smiled.
After the servants left, Mia frowned and asked worriedly, "What about the surveillance footage at the Moore Manor?"
Nina patted her hand reassuringly. "Don't worry, leave that to me. I'll take care of the footage. Once it's destroyed, we're in the clear."
Mia nodded, still feeling uneasy. She was torn, hoping Calliope would wake up on one hand, and wishing she wouldn't on the other.
Nina left, claiming she was going to handle the footage, but a sly smile crept onto her face as she walked out.
In reality, today's incident with Calliope was all part of her plan.
She had given Mia a drug that induced anxiety beforehand and told her where Calliope would be, predicting the outcome and hinting that she was watching everything through the camera.
The camera had already been destroyed by her, so it couldn't record their actions.
Meanwhile, in a dingy alley, Rose and Tom were at it again, arguing because Tom wanted Rose to pay for David's medical treatment.
Rose was in a foul mood, having been beaten at work, and her cheek was still swollen.
"Why should I pay for your son's treatment? Isn't all my money with you? You lost it gambling and now you come to me for more? No way!" Rose snapped, applying ointment to her wound in front of the mirror.
If it weren't for the injury on her face, she could have just covered it up, but with a facial injury, Rose had to buy ointment from the hospital.
"Bitch, how dare you talk back! And you bought ointment? Don't you know how to save money? How dare you buy ointment for yourself!" Tom yelled, snatching the ointment and examining the cheap item in his hand.
"I make a living with my face. If my looks are damaged, who will want me?" Rose tried to grab the ointment back, but Tom held it tightly to his chest.
