Chapter 141
Calliope stormed out in anger, not letting Ava accompany her, thinking that a walk might help clear her mind.
The Moore manor was quite secluded, and the nearest supermarket was a ten-minute walk away. For most people, this distance was no big deal, but for Calliope, who was seven or eight months pregnant, every step was a struggle, especially with the dim lighting at night.
She hadn't walked far when it started to drizzle. Calliope frustratingly realized she had forgotten to bring an umbrella and had no choice but to continue walking to the supermarket.
Inside the Moore manor, ever since Calliope left, Jenny and Ava had been on edge.
Jenny knew Sylvester never ate a midnight snack; his earlier request was just an excuse. She hastily cooked something in the kitchen, but her mind was preoccupied with worries about Calliope.
"It's raining, Mrs. Moore didn't bring an umbrella. Jenny, do you think she'll be in danger?" Ava paced back and forth in the kitchen, looking worried.
"I'm worried too, but it's dark and slippery outside, we can't go out." Jenny clasped her hands tightly, feeling helpless.
In the bedroom, as soon as Calliope left, Sylvester made the woman's moaning stop. He found the sound annoying and lay alone in bed, his mind filled with thoughts of whether Calliope would encounter any trouble outside.
Time ticked by, and two hours passed, but Calliope still hadn't returned.
Does it really take this long to buy something? Is Calliope really walking slower than a snail?
Sylvester muttered to himself, clearly growing anxious.
In the living room, Jenny and Ava had long been standing by the door, eagerly waiting. Ava couldn't help but suggest, "Why don't we go talk to Mr. Sylvester Moore and ask him to go look for Mrs. Moore?"
"Alright, that's all we can do." Jenny sighed, and the two of them headed upstairs together.
Just as they reached the door, it opened, and a cold voice came from inside, "Get that person out of here!" Then, Sylvester hurriedly ran downstairs to drive and look for Calliope.
At the supermarket, Calliope finally finished shopping and queued up to pay, grumbling about how there were so many people shopping on a rainy day. After paying, she prepared to leave, only to find that the rain had intensified.
The torrential rain made it impossible for her to move, and she didn't have enough money in her pocket to buy an umbrella. Helpless, Calliope decided to find a place to take shelter from the rain.
Sitting on a bench, she looked at the shopping bag in her hand and couldn't help but smile bitterly. She never thought she would end up in such a situation: buying daily necessities alone and now unable to go home.
Why did she agree to come here to buy things for Sylvester? Why did she stay in this place that was so unfriendly to her? The Moore family was hostile towards her, and she was tired of enduring such pressure.
The root of all this was that released video. Although the video wasn't real, she had borne all the blame. If it weren't for that video, Sylvester wouldn't have fallen ill, and none of this would have happened.
If it weren't for the child in her belly, Calliope didn't even know what she would be like now. Thinking of this, tears began to fall uncontrollably, and she didn't care how the people around her looked at her.
When Sylvester drove over, he saw Calliope's face covered in water, unable to tell if it was tears or rain. From her expression, she seemed very aggrieved.
He couldn't help but reflect on whether his actions had been too impulsive. Maybe he should listen to her explanation?
But then he thought, Calliope was so clever, was she deliberately putting on a show for him?
Sylvester smoked a few cigarettes in the car, waiting for a long time, but Calliope still didn't move. Seeing her wipe away her tears and prepare to walk back in the rain, he finally got out of the car.
"What are you doing here?" Calliope looked up and saw that familiar face, feeling a bit surprised. How could Sylvester possibly care about her?
"For the child." Sylvester said coldly, pulling her into the car.
Looking at Sylvester's stern profile, Calliope suddenly felt that the person in front of her was so unfamiliar, as if everything before had been a false play.
Noticing Calliope's gaze, Sylvester repeated once again, "Don't overthink it, I'm here because of the child."
"I didn't say it wasn't because of the child, you don't need to explain." Calliope immediately retorted, then withdrew her gaze. She didn't expect Sylvester to notice.
"I have nothing to explain, but don't you think there are some things you should explain?" Sylvester felt he should know the answer and asked directly, regardless of the occasion.
Explain? What? What was Sylvester thinking?
Do they all need explanations? Even if she explained, would Sylvester believe her? Or would he just think she was making excuses?
Before Calliope could speak, the car had already stopped at the house. John stood expressionless at the door, with Jenny and Ava standing beside him.
"It seems they all know." Calliope thought, but she didn't care much. This matter wasn't her fault.
Sure enough, as soon as they entered the living room, John frowned and said to Sylvester, "You really are something, how could you be so impulsive over a video? What if something happened to the child?"
After speaking, John didn't forget to glare at Calliope. Calliope understood that John never wanted her here. From the bracelet incident to Zoey's issue, and then to Sylvester's near-death experience, all these misfortunes made John see her as a bringer of bad luck.
"Yeah, better go to the hospital tomorrow to make sure the child is okay." Michael chimed in.
"Got it." Sylvester replied impatiently, then turned and went upstairs.
The Moore family really cared about the child in her belly, the child she once considered a bargaining chip.
The child was a bargaining chip, and Calliope herself was nothing more than a tool for having children. If it weren't for Sylvester's near-death experience and the concern about the Moore family having no heir, John and Michael probably wouldn't have let her live until now.
