Chapter 71
Calliope stared at her reflection in the mirror, her eyes wide with panic and confusion. She clutched the sink, trying to steady herself. "Stay calm, just get a pregnancy test and find out for sure!"
She fought back the nausea and slowly stepped out of the bathroom. Sylvester was still asleep, so she quietly slipped out of the room.
She took the elevator down to the first floor and bumped into a servant cleaning up Sylvester's mess in the living room.
"Hey, where's Jenny?" she asked.
The servant looked up. "I just saw her in the garden."
Without missing a beat, Calliope headed out of the villa. Just as she stepped outside, she ran into Ava, who was carrying a pile of towels. Ava looked surprised. "Mrs. Moore, where are you off to?"
"Perfect timing," Calliope said, glancing around to make sure no one else was around. She pulled Ava aside and whispered, "Do you have a pregnancy test?"
"A pregnancy test?" Ava's eyes widened, thinking Calliope was already pregnant. Calliope quickly covered her mouth. "Do you want everyone to know?"
Ava giggled softly. "Mrs. Moore, are you pregnant?"
Calliope felt a surge of irritation. "No, I just need to check. I've been feeling nauseous, and my period's late. It's weird."
She did a quick mental calculation. Her period was over a week late.
"What day is it today?" Calliope grabbed Ava's sleeve, her eyes full of anticipation.
Ava, a bit puzzled, smiled. "It's the 20th, why?"
Calliope's mind went blank. It was already the 20th! Her cycle usually came around the 15th, give or take a day or two. Could she really be pregnant?
"Do you have a pregnancy test?" Calliope asked again.
Ava shook her head. "No, Mr. Moore rarely brings girls home; they all stay at hotels. Should I go buy one for you? There's a convenience store nearby."
"Go quickly! And don't tell anyone!" Calliope's expression was tense. If the Moore family found out, she'd be in big trouble.
"Why? If Mr. John Moore knew you were pregnant, he'd be thrilled. He's always wanted Mr. Sylvester Moore to have his own child." Ava was confused. Didn't Calliope like Sylvester? Why was she acting like this?
Realizing her outburst, Calliope forced a smile. "No, I mean it's not confirmed yet. If you spread the word and it turns out I'm not pregnant, it would be a false alarm."
Ava nodded. "You're right; it would be disappointing. Okay, I'll go now."
"Thanks, Ava. Hurry back." As Ava left, Calliope grew even more anxious.
Her heart pounded. If she was really pregnant, she'd have to terminate it.
But this would be the first time in her life facing such a choice. Abortion, a word that had always seemed distant, now awaited the verdict of a pregnancy test.
In the shadows, Linda, the eldest daughter of the Moore family, and her husband Joseph Brown were eavesdropping on everything.
"Did you catch that? Calliope might be pregnant," Linda said, a flicker of jealousy in her eyes.
Joseph sneered. "She's playing it smart, not rushing to announce it, just quietly confirming first. But that kid can't stay, whether it's a boy or a girl."
"Let's wait and see. Sylvester won't last long anyway. I talked to Dr. Garcia yesterday, and Sylvester's condition is pretty grim. He might look fine, but one hard hit to the head, and he's done for," Linda said, her tone cold and unsympathetic.
"Find out what your dad thinks. He's always been wary of us, never letting us into the board of directors, not taking me seriously at all. Does he really think Sylvester can pull off a miracle? After all the crap he's done, he still wants to sleep peacefully? Wishful thinking!" Joseph's eyes were filled with malice, eager for Sylvester to die so he could take over the family business.
Linda looked troubled. "You're not his biological son. If he doesn't rely on Sylvester, who else can he rely on? He even guards against me, let alone you. Dad has always been biased, spoiling Sylvester since childhood. Now that Sylvester has harmed him so much, he doesn't have a word of complaint. Seeing that Sylvester doesn't have much time left, he's still doting on him!"
"Sylvester's life is really torturous. It would be better if he just died! Dragging on for two years and still not dead, I don't know how much longer this will go on," Joseph said, full of resentment. He wasn't the only one hoping for Sylvester's early death.
In the living room, Calliope paced anxiously. Why hadn't Ava returned yet? Her brows furrowed with worry.
"Mrs. Moore!" Ava came running back, panting. "Mrs. Moore, I got it! I got it!"
Calliope snatched the pregnancy test and rushed to the first-floor bathroom.
Ava stood there, bewildered, as Calliope disappeared.
Five minutes later, Calliope stared at the result on the pregnancy test, utterly confused. Was she pregnant or not?
One line was deep red, while the other was very faint, almost pink. What did this mean?
She only knew that two red lines meant pregnant, and one line meant not pregnant. But what did this uneven color mean?
Calliope walked out of the bathroom, looking slightly disappointed. As she opened the door, Ava and Jenny were already waiting. Jenny looked expectant. "How did it go?"
Calliope glared at Ava, as if blaming her for telling Jenny.
Ava scratched her head awkwardly, still curious. "Mrs. Moore, what's the result?"
She helplessly handed the pregnancy test to Jenny. "I can't understand it. Do you?"
Ava shook her head, equally puzzled. Jenny took it and said, "Calliope, one deep and one faint line means you might be pregnant, you'd better go to the hospital for a check-up."
