Chapter 122

Calliope smirked, a hint of sarcasm playing on her lips.

These two would say anything to make a quick buck and were pros at hijacking the conversation.

"If I don't buy it, you won't even see $10,000. Think it over," Calliope said casually, rubbing her head.

Rex, defiant as ever, shot back, "If you don't buy it, then don't! Just wait and see how David dies!"

Calliope's tone turned icy. "I forgot to mention, he's just my stepdad's kid, and my stepdad doesn't give a damn about him. I'm only doing this out of pity. If it gets too much, I'll walk away. No blood ties, no big deal."

She said it so easily, like she really meant it.

"Aren't you scared he'll die?" Rex glared at her.

"He's not blood, why should I care? Sure, he was nice to me when we were kids, but I can't bankrupt my family over it." Calliope's words made sense, but inside, she was torn. She was bluffing; she'd never abandon David. But this couple seemed to buy it.

"$10,000 won't cut it. $50,000." Rex's eyes bore into her, like he wanted to eat her alive. Dropping from $100,000 to $50,000, he was clearly reluctant.

Calliope watched their reactions and didn't push further. She knew $50,000 was their limit, and pushing more might blow the whole deal.

She pretended to hesitate for a long time before finally agreeing, "Alright, deal. I'll go get the money."

She left, but in reality, she was far short of the cash, and Rose wouldn't even give her the $10,000, leaving her stuck.

After Calliope left, Nina quietly slipped into Sylvester's hospital room.

Seeing Sylvester, she burst into tears. "Sylvester, if I knew this would happen after I left, I would've never gone. But why are you so cold to me now that I'm back?"

"Sylvester, you said our wedding would be in Simbara or by the sea. You said the flowers in Simbara were the prettiest, but not as pretty as me. Sylvester, please wake up."

"Sylvester, Sylvester." Sylvester's voice came, but he was calling Calliope's name.

Nina gritted her teeth. What did Calliope have that made Sylvester think of her even in a coma?

"Sylvester, it's not Calliope, it's Nina." Nina's eyes were full of resentment.

Sylvester didn't seem to hear and instead pulled Nina into his arms, kissing her lips in his confusion.

Nina didn't resist until Sylvester started to unbutton her clothes, but then he suddenly stopped and fell heavily to the side. Nina shook him. "Sylvester, wake up."

Sylvester fell into a deep sleep again, calling Calliope's name in his unconsciousness, which made Nina furious. Sylvester was hers, and she wouldn't let anyone take him away, anyone.

She hatched a plan, slowly undressing and lying naked beside Sylvester, her disheveled appearance enough to make anyone think they'd just had a wild night.

Meanwhile, Calliope returned to the Moore family, her mind racing about where to get the $50,000.

At home, Lucas was keeping a close eye on Sylvester, as the Moore family didn't trust other doctors.

Seeing Lucas, Calliope was less hostile than usual. "By the way, how's Sylvester doing now?"

Lucas scrutinized her. "You know, even though you two are married, it always feels like there's something missing between you. It's weird."

Calliope waved it off. "What's weird about it? My marriage is just for show. Nina's back, and Sylvester's heart is all hers. He can divorce me whenever he wants."

Usually, Calliope was indifferent about divorce, but today she felt a strange reluctance.

Feeling reluctant for a sick person, Calliope found herself a bit odd.

"Calliope, that Nina isn't as simple as she seems. Be careful." Lucas hesitated but decided to spill the beans. He and Nina were just acquaintances, not close friends.

"Aren't you two pretty tight? What's with the sudden change?" Calliope's eyes were full of suspicion. She used to see Lucas and Nina being close and thought they were friends, but now it seemed there was more to it.

"You're overthinking it. We're just casual friends. If it weren't for Sylvester, I wouldn't have pretended to be a couple with her. From the start, she was after Sylvester, but he didn't want to believe it."

Lucas confessed. He had warned Sylvester that Nina had ulterior motives, but Sylvester didn't believe him.

Calliope felt that Lucas had many secrets. He knew a lot but never revealed much, only sharing what he wanted to. The rest, no matter what, he kept to himself. He was indeed a deep thinker.

Once, Calliope had ignored Lucas's existence. She thought, what could a gentle, seemingly frail man hide in his heart? Now she realized it was her own shallowness.

"Why are you staring at me like that?" Lucas touched his face, puzzled.

Calliope coughed twice and said directly, "Why didn't I notice before that you also have secrets?"

Lucas's smile faded, and he turned to leave. "Everyone has untold stories. You do too. Everyone has another self inside them, just not willing to show it usually."

Calliope had to admit that Lucas made sense. When she came back to her senses, Lucas was already gone.

She walked towards Sylvester's hospital room, wondering where Nina had gone.

She grabbed Jenny and asked softly, "Jenny, have you seen Nina?"
