Chapter 65
The next morning, warm sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows, lighting up the room. Calliope was sprawled out on the big bed, hugging the soft quilt, looking quite lazy.
From the bathroom, one could hear the water running. Sylvester had this almost obsessive need to be clean, even showering in the morning like he was still trying to wash off the passion from last night.
Half-awake, Calliope heard a phone ringing. She reached out and grabbed it, not realizing it was Sylvester's phone, not hers.
Her messy long hair fell over her shoulders as she brought the phone to her ear. Before she could say anything, Robert's voice came through. "Sylvester, Matthew said he wants to thank us for our cooperation and fired David. He's inviting us to dinner tonight. Are you going? I have no interest in that dinner; he's probably just trying to get Lily to cling to you."
Before Robert could finish, Calliope was wide awake, her eyes snapping open. Lily? Again with Lily!
She thought, 'Where does Lily place David? When she liked him, they were inseparable. After learning about his heart condition, she was eager to distance herself, even trying to sever all ties?'
In a flash, a cunning look appeared in Calliope's eyes. Maybe this was a good chance for David to see Lily's true colors!
Just then, the bathroom door opened, and Sylvester walked out, glancing at the now-awake Calliope lying on the bed. He smiled faintly and walked to the mirror, lazily tying his tie.
Calliope quietly watched his tall and handsome back, biting her lower lip as if contemplating something. Then she got up and walked towards Sylvester. "Let me help you."
Calliope stood in front of Sylvester, wearing a thin robe, her face focused as she carefully adjusted his tie.
This gesture surprised Sylvester a bit. He squinted his eyes slightly and asked lazily, "Why are you so obedient today?"
"Can you promise me one thing?" Calliope's gentleness today felt unfamiliar even to herself; she rarely showed such tenderness to others.
Sylvester lifted her chin with his index finger, his deep eyes meeting her starry ones, and said in a low voice, "Go ahead."
"Don't fire David!" Calliope blurted out. This request was the very reason for her visit!
Hearing David, Sylvester's face darkened. He released her chin and sneered disdainfully. "Him again."
"You told me to make a request!" Calliope's temper couldn't be hidden. Her moment of gentleness had reached its limit; she was not naturally a gentle person.
Sylvester instead laughed, a meaningful laugh. "Fine, I'll keep him, but I want him to see with his own eyes that you belong to me."
Calliope's heart tightened, but her primary task at the moment was to save David's job. She feared that David couldn't handle the blow and might have a heart attack.
In the hospital, David, deeply depressed, received a phone call, which reignited his hope for life.
The HR department informed him that he wasn't being fired but transferred out of the finance department. This sudden turn of events puzzled him. Could it be the Smith Family intervening? Thinking of this, David felt deeply guilty and vowed to make a name for himself, to become Lily's pride.
But he didn't know that all of this was because Calliope had pleaded with Sylvester.
He also didn't know that over the years, it was Calliope who had been working various jobs to support his education. Rose and Tom wouldn't have funded him. Calliope saw David as her only hope in a life of hardship, believing he would take her away from her misery. She never anticipated Lily's appearance would disrupt everything.
At the Moore manor, Calliope wandered alone, unintentionally arriving in front of the chapel. She stopped, clasped her hands together, and closed her eyes to make a wish. No one knew what it was.
Suddenly, a male voice sounded behind her. "Calliope."
