Chapter 147
Calliope watched as Sylvester walked far ahead and couldn't help but quicken her pace. She didn't want to encounter anything creepy; it was just too scary.
At the corner, that shadow appeared again, like a ghost, always following her. Calliope broke out in a cold sweat. Upon closer inspection, it was Lucas. Calliope frowned. Why was Lucas sneaking around here so late instead of staying in his villa?
Driven by curiosity, Calliope quietly followed Lucas, hiding and observing his every move. She saw Lucas take a small brush from a bucket and vigorously apply something to the wall. But because it was too dark, Calliope couldn't see anything.
After finishing, Lucas looked around, and Calliope quickly hid. After Lucas walked away, Calliope went up to inspect the wall closely, only to find that there was nothing different about the area Lucas had brushed. But wait, there was a strange chemical smell in the air.
Lucas was a doctor, so using chemicals was normal. But why was he brushing something in a place everyone passed by? Was he conducting some research? If so, why do it secretly at night?
Having encountered so many strange things today, Calliope decided to investigate Lucas's villa out of curiosity. She saw Lucas just entering, and the door was still open, so she walked right in. In the hallway, she smelled the same familiar scent from the wall.
Lucas, who had just washed his hands, was shocked to see Calliope. "Calliope, what are you doing here?" His expression was unnatural, as if he was hiding something. "I was just taking a walk and came to see you," Calliope said, trying to appear casual.
"Dressed like that, you call it a walk?" Lucas asked, eyeing her dirty clothes. "I went to a party, had some drinks, and took a walk to sober up," Calliope made up an excuse.
"Would you like a cup of coffee, sit for a while?" Lucas seemed to relax a bit but was still visibly tense. "No, thanks. You seem a bit off, like you're anxious. Did something happen?" Calliope probed, knowing Lucas wouldn't tell the truth if asked directly.
Hearing this, Lucas's hand trembled slightly as he held the cup. "What could happen to me? Look, I'm fine," he smiled, but it was a forced smile.
"Good to hear. I was just concerned," Calliope smiled to reassure him. "By the way, how have you been feeling lately?" Lucas tried to change the subject. "Very well! It's getting late; I should go rest."
As she was about to leave, she saw Sylvester standing there with his arms crossed, looking at her sarcastically. "Had enough fun? Ready to go to bed?" His tone was full of mockery. "Move!" Calliope snapped, feeling that the whole manor was off.
Back in her room, changing clothes, Jenny and Ava were complaining about how despicable Nina was, but Calliope didn't hear a word. She tossed and turned in bed, unable to sleep, her mind filled with chaotic thoughts. Even with heavy eyelids, she couldn't fall asleep. Finally, with Ava's help, she managed to sleep, but her dreams were restless.
Early the next morning, hurried footsteps outside woke her. Opening the door, she saw Jenny rushing over, and Ava asked in confusion, "Why does everyone look so unsettled? Did something happen?"
Calliope, also awakened, immediately asked Jenny what had happened. "Don't worry, we'll take you to see the scene," Jenny said. They all went to the scene, where several people had already gathered, all with serious expressions.
When Calliope saw the situation, she almost couldn't stand, but Jenny supported her: on the wall Lucas had brushed yesterday, there was a huge, terrifying word "DEATH!"
She immediately looked at Lucas; this clearly had something to do with him!
Calliope stared at Lucas, thinking about all the strange things that had happened since she arrived at the Moore manor, wondering if he had some connection with Zoey. Could Samuel have had secret dealings with him?
Otherwise, how could everything unfold like a script?
The Moore manor had always had tight security, but the recent series of bizarre events had John, the head of the family, furious. Sylvester, beside him, angrily punched the wall, determined to find out the truth. How dare someone do such creepy things in his house!
John turned to Butler Jenny, gave some instructions, and then saw Calliope behind him. Frowning, he said, "Jenny, take Mrs. Moore back to rest. This kind of thing is bad luck; it's not good for her to see too much, especially for the baby."
She obediently followed Jenny, but before leaving, Calliope glanced at Lucas again. Although he seemed worried, his reaction was somewhat unusual. If she hadn't been paying attention, she might have missed it.
Why was Lucas acting this way? After all, he was related to Sylvester. If something happened to the Moore family, it wouldn't be good for him either, right?
Could it be that infamous Zoey causing trouble again? But if it were really a ghost, why would Lucas brush that wall?
She didn't believe in ghosts, so the most likely scenario was that Lucas and Samuel were conspiring. After all, those two were not simple, and it wouldn't be surprising if they did something strange.
Meanwhile, John had started to completely lock down the Moore manor, enhancing the surveillance system, and all visitors had to be checked. Sylvester had also been rarely seen lately, seemingly investigating something secretly.
Due to her lingering doubts and recent insomnia, Calliope went to the hospital for a check-up with Jenny and Ava.
As she was about to leave, she happened to pass by Lucas's office and pretended to walk by casually. "Calliope," Lucas greeted her, "Are you here for a prenatal check-up?"
