Chapter 115
When it came to surgery, John couldn't help but frown. The odds were so bad that he might not even make it off the table alive. This was his only son, after all.
Calliope felt uneasy too. Thinking about Sylvester's condition brought a wave of sadness she couldn't quite explain.
She quickly shook off the feeling. Why should she feel sorry for someone like him?
The Moore family had a ton of stuff that needed John's attention. As Sylvester's wife, she should be by his side, no question.
Night fell, covering everything in darkness, and the moonlight looked like it was wrapped in a thin veil, ready to blow away with the wind.
In the VIP ward, Sylvester's sleeping face looked unusually peaceful.
Calliope stood there, staring at him with a mix of emotions. She had married him hoping he'd kick the bucket, but then she found out he wasn't as bad as everyone said. Now, she wasn't so sure she wanted him gone.
Nina wanted to stay with Sylvester, but John shut that down real quickly. Calliope still remembered the hateful look Nina gave her.
Calliope found it kind of funny. She'd never tried to compete with Nina. Even when Sylvester brought Nina home, she didn't make a fuss, but Nina just wouldn't let it go.
"Calliope, Calliope," he kept mumbling her name in his sleep, looking serious. Calliope rushed from the window to his bedside, worried.
"I'm here. What do you need?" She grabbed his cold hand, only to realize he was still out cold, just talking in his sleep.
Hearing her voice, Sylvester seemed to calm down, the worry lines on his forehead easing up, and he fell back into a peaceful sleep, still holding her hand.
Calliope had never seen him so at peace. She gently stroked his smooth face, then sat down beside him and slowly drifted off.
Liberty Grove University was a top-notch school, full of famous professors and future big shots. Lately, companies have been snapping up their grads as soon as they hit the job market.
"Alright, let's get into this experiment," a professor said, full of energy.
This was Samuel, the psychology professor.
If people knew this guy was a psycho killer, would they still show up to his class?
Samuel was deep into his lecture, and the students were eating it up, finding his insights pretty mind-blowing.
Psychology was a mysterious and fascinating subject, drawing in lots of curious minds, including some very talented and beautiful female students.
After class, the students didn't want to leave, eager for more. Samuel's lecture was just that good, and his deep understanding of psychology let him read people like a book.
"Professor, this is for you," a female student said, handing him a heart-shaped gift.
Honestly, Samuel wasn't bad-looking, especially in a suit with glasses and slicked-back hair. He looked sharp and sunny.
It wasn't surprising that some female students had a thing for him. Some girls just liked that type, and maybe there was even a bet involved.
The crowd cheered, and the girl blushed, while Samuel just smiled a little, saying nothing.
Then the girl ran off, and the others, seeing the show was over, scattered too.
As the crowd thinned out, a sinister look flashed in Samuel's eyes, and a cruel smile played on his lips as he watched them leave.
Back at the Moore manor, Sylvester's condition wasn't looking good, and Calliope stayed by his side, never leaving.
Sylvester still called out Calliope's name every now and then, making her heart almost melt.
Seeing this, Lucas suggested she go grab a bite to eat.
Calliope gave him a blank look and shook her head. "No thanks, I'm not hungry. I don't want to eat."
"You can't just not eat. You need your strength. Eat something and then come back to take care of Sylvester," Lucas said, looking at her with concern.
"I really don't want to eat. You go ahead." Calliope's eyes stayed glued to Sylvester lying in the hospital bed. She felt more frustrated than ever, just hoping he'd wake up soon.
"Calliope, Sylvester hasn't woken up yet. What if you collapse too? Don't you want to see him wake up with your own eyes? The Moore family will take good care of him, and his condition will be managed," Lucas said, almost losing his cool for the first time.
Calliope looked at him, confused, not getting why her eating mattered to Lucas.
When Calliope stepped out, she saw Nina crying outside. As soon as Nina saw her, she rushed over. "Calliope, I know I messed up before, but can you tell me how Sylvester is now? Is it serious? Can I go in and see him, just for a moment?"
Calliope found her over-the-top actions amusing. Anyone who didn't know better would think Nina was the lady of the house.
"Sylvester hasn't woken up yet. Stop being so dramatic; it's making me uncomfortable. If you have any requests, ask the Moore family. I don't have the authority to decide." Calliope walked past her without a second glance.
Nina watched Calliope's back, gritting her teeth in anger. What right did she have to criticize her? If it weren't for trying to change the Moore family's opinion of her, she wouldn't bother with this act.
The dining table was loaded with tempting dishes, but Calliope had no appetite.
"I still don't feel like eating." Calliope stared at the food, feeling nauseous.
Jenny continued to take care of Calliope attentively. Ever since Calliope had saved her job, she had become even more loyal to her.
She brought a bowl of chicken soup to Calliope. "Mrs. Moore, you can't go without eating. The Moore family's hopes rest on you and the baby. Even if you don't want anything greasy, at least have some soup."
Calliope looked at the soup, frowned, and touched her belly, forcing herself to take a few sips. But to her, the once delicious food had lost its flavor.
"Jenny, has Nina been acting weird around the Moore family lately?" Calliope put down the bowl and asked calmly.
Calliope always felt that Nina was good at causing trouble, and many problems were stirred up by her.
Now John was busy with the company, Michael had gone abroad to find a doctor, and Sylvester was still unconscious. Besides Sylvester's sisters, she was the only one left in the Moore family who could make decisions.
Surely, others wouldn't be happy to see her pregnant. They were all hoping for the child to be lost and Sylvester to die. Maybe they were even secretly supporting Nina's schemes.
"She hasn't done anything bad these days, just occasionally chatting with Ms. Mia Moore and often crying. The servants in the house feel sorry for her, saying you are unkind, letting her cry and not allowing her to see Mr. Moore."
Jenny observed Calliope's expression secretly as she spoke, feeling slightly relieved to see her remain calm and composed.
Experienced people would know Nina's schemes, but those who were naive could easily be deceived by her pitiful appearance.
"Not letting her in was Dad's decision. Why is all the blame on me?" Calliope found it amusing but still wanted to find out who was secretly helping Nina.
