Chapter 75
Sylvester took one look at her sad face, sighed, and headed into the living room. He grabbed a glass of ice water from the bar and handed it to Calliope.
Calliope, looking beat, caught her reflection in the mirror and wondered why she felt so off tonight. The doctor had ruled out pregnancy, which was a relief. If it wasn't that, then it was probably no big deal.
When Sylvester handed her the ice water, she was taken aback. Who knew this rich guy had a soft side?
"Thanks," she said, downing the water in one go. She felt a lot better.
"Stop eating random stuff, okay?" Sylvester said gently. Calliope felt a strange warmth.
She avoided his eyes and mumbled a reply.
Seeing her hair all messy, Sylvester started fixing it for her. She froze, staring at him, her emotions all over the place.
Why was her heart racing? Was this what they called love in those cheesy dramas?
She blinked and saw his deep gaze, feeling like she might drown in it.
Reality snapped Calliope back. "I'll deal with this nutjob. Don't worry. How dare he pretend to be my dad, what a freak!" She put down the glass and left the room.
Sylvester's gaze deepened, his fingers still tingling with the scent of her hair. This girl was more trouble than he thought.
Calliope stormed into the living room, spotting Tom snooping around.
"You're shameless! Why are you asking him for a hundred grand?" Calliope demanded.
Tom, startled, turned and relaxed when he saw it was Calliope. "Calliope, how can you talk to me like that? Now that you're with a rich guy, you don't care about your mom and me? Heartless! If you don't give me the money, I'll take it myself. Think you can hog all the wealth? Dream on!"
Calliope was stunned. How could she have such a stepfather?
"Get out! Get out now! I don't want to see you!" Calliope tried to push Tom away, but he grabbed her wrist. "Want me to leave? Give me the money! You're living it up while your mom and I suffer. Where's your conscience?"
"I don't have any money! Do you think I'm a cash cow? Get out!"
Suddenly, Tom screamed in pain, clutching his cheek and falling to the ground.
Before Calliope could react, someone stepped in to protect her—it was Sylvester.
"Who gave you the right to touch her? Get out!" Sylvester barked at Tom, his voice icy.
"You dare hit me! She's my daughter! What's wrong with me touching her? I've been hitting her since she was little! Calliope! Now that you're with a rich man, you turn your back on us."
Calliope hid behind Sylvester, playing innocent. "I don't know you! You're crazy! My dad is Jack!"
"You ungrateful brat! I'll tell your mom you don't recognize her! And dare to mention Jack, you're just his..." Before he could say "illegitimate daughter," Calliope snapped, "Shut up! Stop talking nonsense!" She slapped him and hissed, "Get out! I'll give you a hundred grand in three days! Otherwise, you won't get a dime!"
Tom's eyes gleamed, a sly smile spreading across his face. It was clear Calliope didn't want Sylvester to know she was an illegitimate daughter.
"Fine! I'm leaving! I'll be waiting!" Tom straightened his clothes and left, with Ava quickly leading the way.
After Tom left, Calliope's racing heart began to calm down. If the truth about her being an illegitimate daughter got out, both she and Jack would be in big trouble.
Sylvester frowned and asked coldly, "What did you say to him?"
Calliope put on an innocent smile and turned around. "I just said if he didn't leave, I'd call the cops. He got scared. People like him aren't worth wasting words on, just pure scum."
Sylvester stepped closer, his deep eyes scrutinizing her. "You really don't know him?"
"Yes!" She looked at Sylvester firmly, hoping he'd believe her.
Sylvester seemed to see through her, nodding slowly. "Then how does he know you have a mole on your left shoulder?" As he spoke, he gently pulled down her collar to check the mark.
Calliope's body stiffened, her eyes widening.
"What's so strange about that? Before I knew you, I often wore revealing clothes and went to bars, wearing sexy camisole dresses. Haven't you seen that? I'll wear one for you next time. He probably saw me at a bar, tried to hit on me, failed, and now comes here pretending to be my dad! It's ridiculous!" She lightly stroked Sylvester's shirt collar, tugging at his tie, her eyes flashing with a teasing look.
Seeing her seductive demeanor, Sylvester felt slightly displeased. Calliope seemed to have been too wild in the past.
"Don't reveal anything in places where I can't see you, or I will be very angry."
Although her explanation sounded reasonable, he still had doubts. But he quietly suppressed them because it no longer mattered.
