Chapter 110

The cops just shook their heads, already knowing Sylvester. "Nope, the car's still MIA, but we're doing everything we can to track her down."

Robert sprinted over to Sylvester, grinning ear to ear, and grabbed his sleeve. "We found the car's trail. Surveillance shows it headed east of the city."

Without a word, Sylvester jumped in his car and sped off to the eastern part of town. In the car, Sylvester went silent, guilt eating him up inside. Panic like he'd never felt before gripped him; this was all on him. If he hadn't been so careless, Calliope wouldn't have been taken. If anything happened to her, he'd never forgive himself.

She was carrying their baby, an innocent life. Not long ago, they were dreaming up baby names, and now, he had no clue where Calliope was.

Seeing Sylvester in such agony, Robert patted his shoulder. "Don't beat yourself up. Maybe Calliope's okay. You gotta believe good things happen to good people. Calliope's never done anything wrong; God wouldn't do this to her."

Sylvester suddenly looked up, eyes blazing, and yelled, "What if something did happen? I can't forgive myself. I'm a lousy father. If I'd just stayed with her, this wouldn't have happened. I'm such a failure! I can't even protect my wife!"

Robert sighed. People said Sylvester was cold and indifferent to women, but they had no idea how much he cared about the ones close to him, like Nina and Calliope.

Robert looked at Sylvester, surprised. He had so many issues with Calliope, so why was he so desperate to get here as soon as he heard she was in trouble? The speed was unreal.

Unable to stand Robert's probing look, Sylvester shoved him away, annoyed. "What's your problem? Back off!"

Robert grabbed his wrist, excited. "Tell me, who do you really love, Calliope or Nina?"

Sylvester pushed him away, irritated. "Cut the crap! What about the stuff I asked you to check? Any news?"

"Not yet, but he said he's got a lead and told me to be patient. I think we'll have answers soon." Robert looked worried too. He always felt there was something off about Calliope, but without proof, he didn't want to jump to conclusions.

As night fell, fear crept into Calliope's heart. In this godforsaken place, it would be easy to kill her and get rid of the body. She kept talking to Samuel, knowing he wouldn't let her go easily, but still hoping for a miracle.

Samuel saw right through her and sneered, "Calliope, you think Sylvester's gonna swoop in and save you? Stop dreaming. I'm gonna make sure your child disappears forever and make Sylvester regret his choice!"

"Wait! This kid isn't Sylvester's. I don't love him; I just wanted his money. I really love David. This baby is David's. I married Sylvester to get cash for David's surgery. It was all a scam!" In a desperate move, Calliope spun this tale. She knew if the baby was hurt, she could bleed out and die in this remote place.

The knife was just an inch from her belly when Samuel paused, intrigued, and looked at her stomach. "Maybe this kid should stick around. Could be a nice surprise for Sylvester later."

Then, Samuel leaned in close and whispered in her ear, "Calliope, forget everything that happened here when I count to three."

With a snap of his fingers, Calliope felt like she woke up from a dream. The desolation around her made her shiver with fear. It was late, the wind was freezing, and she was starving. Surrounded by tombstones, even the toughest person would be scared, let alone someone as fragile as Calliope.

Sylvester arrived in the eastern part of the city, spotting a cemetery. He knew this was where Zoey was buried. He quickly gathered his team to search the area.

The group, flashlights in hand, called out Calliope's name, their voices echoing through the silent graveyard.

When that familiar name pierced the night, Calliope's fear turned to shock. They had actually come to find her. She quickly shouted, "I'm here, right here."

As soon as she spoke, the police and Sylvester rushed over, with Sylvester's steps particularly urgent. He ran to her and hugged her tightly. Calliope was stunned for a moment, not knowing what to say. It had been a long time since he held her like that.

After a moment, Sylvester let go, cleared his throat, and turned his head, saying softly, "I was just hugging my child, not you."

Robert, panting, arrived and excitedly said to Calliope, "In the car, Sylvester was full of guilt, constantly saying sorry to you and the baby. Look, he rushed over as soon as he saw you."

These words made both of them feel awkward. Calliope looked at the police behind her and asked Sylvester, "Did you call the cops?"

Sylvester replied, his tone calm, "Grandpa called the police."

"Alright." Calliope felt a subtle wave of emotion from Sylvester's warm embrace. It was a strange yet ticklish feeling that made her heart flutter.

"By the way, how did you end up here?" Sylvester finally asked the crucial question.
