Chapter 116

Jenny hesitated, looking like she had something tough to get off her chest.

Calliope gave her a gentle smile. "Jenny, if it's hard to say, just don't."

Jenny felt a pang of guilt. Calliope had gone to bat for her to keep this job, and now she couldn't even share this little thing.

Awkwardly, she said, "It was Ms. Mia Moore who said it. And when people asked why Miss Rodriguez couldn't come in, she always looked all sad and said it was your call, and they shouldn't pry."

Calliope stirred her soup, her face giving nothing away, leaving Jenny clueless about what she was thinking.

Calliope thought, 'Nina's making it sound like I stopped her from seeing Sylvester, and Mia's backing her up. Whatever, let them talk. I don't have time for their drama.'

She stood up slowly and said to Jenny, "Let's take a walk by the lake."

Jenny, knowing Calliope needed to unwind, quickly nodded and followed her.

In a corner of the dining room, Linda and Joseph watched Calliope leave, looking annoyed. "Why isn't she eating anything?"

Linda was irritated, and Joseph patted her shoulder. "It's okay, just because it didn't work this time doesn't mean it won't next time. But this is risky. Do we really have to do this?"

Seeing Joseph waver, Linda kicked him lightly. "Don't be such a wimp. Do you want me to live off my family's scraps? Dad gave everything to his son, and we daughters got nothing."

Joseph's face changed a bit, but he didn't argue. He couldn't, really, since he was benefiting from her family.

To get the company, they needed Sylvester out of the picture. With his fate up in the air and no access to his ward, they had to target Calliope's baby.

They'd slipped a tiny bit of abortifacient into her food. It wouldn't harm her right away, but over time, it could cause a miscarriage or a stillbirth.

Calliope reached the lakeside, staring at the shimmering water, feeling the weight of the world on her shoulders. She'd never had a loving family, so why was life so hard?

Mia, who couldn't stand being alone, happened to run into Calliope by the lake.

She quickly approached. "What did you do to make Sylvester so mad that he's still out cold?"

Calliope turned to her, full of disdain. "Haven't you heard? That's just how he is. If that's my fault, then I guess falling leaves are my fault too?"

Already in a bad mood, Calliope didn't want to deal with anyone, especially not Mia. But Mia wouldn't leave her alone.

"Calliope, you're so ungrateful. I'm talking to you nicely, and you don't appreciate it. I'm warning you, stay away from Sylvester. His wife can only be Nina. Who do you think you are?" Mia, being young and impulsive, snapped.

Calliope didn't want to argue. Her mind was a mess, and she glanced at Mia with disdain before turning away.

"Are you listening to me?" Mia, spoiled her whole life, had never been ignored like this, except by Sylvester. Seeing Calliope's attitude, she lost it and shoved her.

Calliope, standing at the edge of the lake, fell right in with a splash.

She screamed and struggled in the water. Mia was stunned, and so were the people around them.

Someone jumped into the lake and, after a struggle, pulled Calliope back onto the grass.

"Mrs. Moore, Mrs. Moore, wake up! Quick, get her to Lucas!" Jenny held Calliope tightly, calling out anxiously, but Calliope was out cold. What now?

Mia also shouted urgently, "Quick! Get her to Lucas!"

Mia's only hope was that Calliope's baby was okay. If anything happened, she'd be in deep trouble. Just thinking about Michael, John, and Sylvester's reactions made her shiver!

She couldn't believe she'd pushed Calliope. Now, it was too late for regrets.

Seeing Calliope unconscious and soaking wet, Lucas couldn't help but ask, "What happened? How did she end up like this?"

He'd only been gone a short while.

Mia cried, "Lucas, please check on her first."

Lucas picked up Calliope and headed towards the villa, everyone trailing behind, worried about what might happen.

Nina, who had been watching the whole time, had a barely noticeable smile on her lips.

Seeing Nina, Mia angrily approached and demanded, "Did you set me up?"
