Chapter 118
Tom was no stranger to getting roughed up himself, so it was pretty obvious that the ointment wasn't going to be saved for Rose.
"You bitch! I'm asking you one last time, got any money? And don't think I'm bluffing this time," Tom snarled, his eyes blazing.
Rose wasn't about to back down. "I don't have any money. Do your worst."
Tom's hand flew up, and he slapped her hard, spitting out, "Bitch, just 'cause I haven't hit you lately, you think I won't? Today, you're getting it!"
"You think I'm a pushover, Tom? I'll fight you to the end!" Rose lunged at him, scratching wildly until his face was a bloody mess.
Meanwhile, someone had told John that Calliope had fallen into the water. He was in the middle of a meeting when he got the call and bolted out, leaving his execs behind.
A curious female colleague remarked, "The Moore family has been acting really weird lately."
A male colleague quickly shut her down. "Mind your own business. We get paid to work, not to gossip. Don't ask too many questions."
The female colleague had no choice but to drop it and stay quiet.
At the Moore manor, Lucas came out and asked, "What happened? How did Calliope end up in the water?"
By now, a crowd had gathered, mostly just nosy onlookers who'd heard about Calliope's fall.
Lucas's eyes landed on Mia, who stepped forward and said, "I was just passing by and saw her fall in, so I saved her. How is she doing now?"
Lucas didn't question her story and said, "It's okay. The baby's fine too. She'll probably wake up by tomorrow morning."
Mia awkwardly avoided Lucas's gaze, thinking about how to handle things once Calliope woke up.
"Don't worry, we'll just deny everything when the time comes. It'll be fine," Nina said, squeezing Mia's hand to reassure her.
Mia nodded. For now, that was all they could do.
John rushed home, his heart pounding. This was his only grandchild. With Sylvester so sick, losing the baby would mean the end of the Moore family line.
That evening, he gathered everyone and demanded, "Who did this? Are you trying to end the Moore family line?"
Mia didn't dare speak, knowing John's anger was no joke.
"Mia, I heard you were the one who took Calliope to Lucas," John said, his face stern.
Mia lowered her head. "Yes, it was me. I saw her fall into the water and took her to Lucas." She had no choice but to admit it.
"Jenny, what about you? Weren't you always with Calliope? How do you explain her condition now?" John found Jenny in the crowd, his eyes boring into her.
Jenny took a deep breath. "Sir, I really don't know. I left Mrs. Moore for a bit because she said she wanted to be alone."
Jenny planned to spill the truth when Calliope woke up the next day; otherwise, Mia wouldn't let her off tonight.
John saw Jenny's helplessness but said nothing more.
"Some of you might wonder why I don't check the surveillance footage, but I have to tell you, the footage has been destroyed. I don't know who did it, but once I find out, they won't get away easily," John said, looking around at everyone. He was already swamped with company issues and now this family crisis, leaving him too exhausted to even get angry.
Seeing no one confess, John sat back on the sofa. "If anyone confesses now, I'll be lenient. If not, the consequences will be severe once I find out. Does anyone have anything to say?"
John first suspected Nina, but her fearless demeanor made him doubt his suspicion.
Everyone stayed silent, so John had no choice but to let them leave. He couldn't really keep everyone there overnight.
Back in her room, Mia was very nervous and confided in Nina, "What if my Dad finds out it was me?"
Nina was in a foul mood. Calliope was unharmed, which was incredibly frustrating.
"Don't worry, nothing will happen. Even if Calliope says something, she has no evidence," Nina said irritably before going off to rest.
The next morning, Calliope woke up groggily, anxiously feeling her abdomen. And then she breathed a sigh of relief.
Lucas was tidying up nearby. Seeing her awake, he said indifferently, "Don't worry, the baby is fine. Now tell me, how did you fall into the water?"
Calliope was filled with anger at the thought of it. She hadn't provoked Mia, yet Mia had pushed her.
"Get me a glass of water first. I'm dying of thirst," Calliope said weakly.
Lucas handed her a glass of water, and Calliope drank it all in one go.
"How is Sylvester now?" Calliope couldn't help but ask.
