Chapter 93

Calliope gave an awkward smile.

The young nurse got the hint and held her hand, asking, "Did your husband agree?"

Calliope shook her head, feeling embarrassed. How could she tell him? If he found out, he'd lose it, maybe even joke about how she should choose her own way to die.

Just thinking about it made Calliope shiver, a chill running down her spine.

"No, he didn't agree," she admitted.

The young nurse sighed, her eyes full of judgment. "How can you not tell your husband about something this big? The fetus is a life too, you can't just end it because of your selfishness. They're innocent, and pregnancy is the best time for a man to show his fatherly love."

Calliope could only manage a bitter smile. She got it, but what could she do? She had her own life to live, and Sylvester was just passing through. He was a playboy with a good family background and plenty of admirers, while she had nothing, coming from a humble background. Without a plan, her future looked tough.

Just then, Room 24 needed a sheet change, and the young nurse hurried off, not forgetting to say goodbye. "I gotta go, let's chat next time."

Calliope nodded and wandered around the gynecology department for a bit before finally leaving. Maybe the nurse's words had struck a chord.

"Where did you go?" David asked gently.

"Nowhere." David didn't know about the pregnancy yet, and she wasn't planning to tell him, keeping it a secret for now.

Who knew what kind of scene Sylvester and Nina were having at home, probably all lovey-dovey?

Why even think about them? What did it have to do with her? She had no interest in that playboy!

Just then, Tom showed up out of nowhere, empty-handed. The person on the bed was his biological son, and he was obviously there to ask David for money to pay off his debts. Since he couldn't get into the Moore manor, he came to bug David. When someone was as selfish as Tom, they didn't deserve to be called human.

Seeing Calliope, he knew he was in the right place and quickly grabbed her wrist, afraid she'd slip away. "Calliope, you still owe me $100,000. When are you gonna pay up?"

In his excitement, he forgot David was there.

David wasn't surprised at all. He knew what Calliope had been through over the years, but he didn't want to face it. "Dad, let go of Calliope."

Tom's only soft spot was his son, but when it came to his own interests, David didn't matter at all.

Amid the crowd's murmurs, Tom cursed and finally let go. Calliope shot him a look full of resentment. This so-called stepfather always claimed he raised her, but it was really Rose who kept the family afloat. Without her and her mom, he'd probably be on the streets. She still couldn't wrap her head around why Rose married such a loser.

"What are you staring at? Calliope, if it weren't for David, I wouldn't give a damn about you," Tom spat out, his words cutting deep, making the nearby patients urge them to keep it down.

"Tom, without my mom and me, you'd be dead already. Every penny you spent was earned by her. You keep badmouthing her, and if it weren't for David, I wouldn't even want to see you."

This was the first time Calliope had let out her frustrations in front of David. She was scared Tom's insults would make David see her differently. She wanted to keep that sweet and innocent image in his eyes.

The surrounding patients watched like it was a show. Life in the hospital was dull, and this argument was their entertainment.

Tom's face turned red with anger. He never expected Calliope to call him out in public. If it weren't for the nurse stepping in, he might've lost it and hit her.

The head nurse sternly warned from the door, "This is a hospital, not your personal battleground. If you want to argue, do it at home. The patients need rest."

Tom stopped, pointing a finger at Calliope's face. "You, come outside with me!"

A patient by the window shakily extended a finger, trying to point something out. The head nurse approached with concern. "Do you need anything?"

The patient, trembling with excitement, said loudly, "Don't stop them, I want to watch the drama."

Calliope laughed at herself. When did she become a joke to everyone else?

Tom had been out of the hospital for a while without seeing Calliope and was about to head back in when he saw her walking out. He stubbed out his cigarette and approached her, extending his hand. "Where's the money? I just want the money. Otherwise, I'll tell the Moore family you're an illegitimate child!"

Anger surged in Calliope's heart as she pointed to the hospital door. "Your biological son is in there. Have you ever paid a cent? Do you think I'm an cash cow?"

"Calliope, why are you so high and mighty? Didn't you marry into a rich family? How are you still short on money? Don't give me any excuses. I want $200,000, not a penny less!" Tom wouldn't miss the chance to extort her, asking for an outrageous amount, thinking Calliope would still cave. But this time, Calliope was completely fed up.
