Chapter 119
Lucas grinned and said, "He's good, stable condition. So, how'd you end up in the water?"
Calliope shot Lucas a sharp look. "What did they say?"
Lucas took a sip of water and said slowly, "Mia said you accidentally fell in, and she just happened to be passing by and saved you."
Calliope scoffed. "Saved me? She pushed me. She got all worked up yesterday and shoved me in."
Lucas was stunned. He knew Mia could be unpredictable, but not like this.
"Are you sure you didn't get it wrong? Mia wouldn't do that," Lucas asked, hoping it was just a mix-up.
"Am I making this up?" Calliope pointed to herself, her smile dripping with sarcasm.
"No, I'm just asking." Lucas forced a smile.
"What about the surveillance footage? Didn't you check it?"
Lucas shook his head. "It's gone. Looks like someone deleted it on purpose. John's looking into it."
Calliope sneered, realizing the whole thing was planned to teach her a lesson.
Soon, John showed up after hearing the news. Seeing Calliope awake, he felt a bit relieved. He walked in and saw her still pale face. "Did you really fall in by yourself?"
Calliope looked up and glanced at Jenny in the distance. "No, Mia pushed me. Jenny can back me up."
"But Jenny said yesterday she didn't know anything." John was shocked. This was more complicated than he thought.
John called Jenny over, and she quickly changed her story. "Mr. John Moore, Ms. Mia Moore told me not to say anything yesterday. I was scared and planned to tell the truth once Mrs. Calliope Moore woke up."
"Tell me what really happened," John demanded, furious. How could Mia do such a thing?
Jenny spilled the whole story. John, already annoyed with Nina staying at the house, was even more ready to kick her out after hearing this.
Mia hadn't expected Jenny to turn on her so fast and spill everything.
John's face darkened, and he sent someone to fetch Mia, who was sitting alone, undisturbed.
Calliope knew he was in a bad mood and quietly picked up a book to read. Jenny, feeling anxious, kept glancing at Calliope on the bed, worried she wouldn't trust her anymore.
"Dad," Mia slowly walked in, calling softly.
John stared at her, silent. Mia was terrified; the unknown was the scariest part.
Soon, Mia couldn't take the tension and knelt down. "Dad, I was wrong. It wasn't on purpose. Please forgive me." Mia never hesitated to admit her mistakes.
Nina, eavesdropping outside, looked down on Mia for confessing so easily.
The result was counterproductive; everyone would be punished, but Calliope's child was unharmed.
"You should apologize to Calliope. I never thought you'd do something like this." John pointed at Mia kneeling on the ground, thinking her actions were a power grab for the company.
Mia was stubborn and showed no respect for Calliope.
"Are you trying to drive me crazy? I'm already swamped with work, and now there's all this drama at home too!" John, without further ado, slapped Mia.
The sharp sound of the slap stunned everyone. Even Calliope didn't expect John to hit Mia.
John was under a lot of pressure, and this incident was just the tipping point.
"Dad! You actually hit me! For Calliope! You're not my father anymore!" Mia, always spoiled, was furious after being hit for the first time.
"I don't have a daughter like you either!" John snapped back, equally enraged.
Mia stormed out. Lucas turned to John, "Uncle John, I'm worried Mia might get into trouble. Should I go after her?"
John waved him off. "Leave her be. She needs to learn her lesson."
Nina hid, scared John might come after her next.
John didn't bother with Nina. After dealing with the situation, he headed back to the company. He had too much work to stick around.
Calliope acted like none of this had anything to do with her.
"You really know how to stay cool," Lucas said, his tone a mix of admiration and frustration.
"Take me to see Sylvester." Calliope closed her book and looked at Lucas, her eyes pleading.
They went to the bedroom where Sylvester lay unconscious. Calliope felt a pang of sorrow. How much longer until he woke up? Why did everything have to go wrong all at once? Fear quietly crept in.
"Why hasn't Grandpa brought in the doctors from abroad yet?" Calliope's voice had a hint of blame and urgency.
Lucas sighed. "You think it's that easy? There are a lot of procedures."
Calliope said nothing more, just quietly gazed at Sylvester, who looked so peaceful, almost lifeless.
At that moment, her phone rang. It was the hospital.
"Hello, Dr. Arnold."
"Mrs. Moore, could you come to the hospital? We have news about the heart donor. We need to discuss it in person."
She suddenly remembered David and quickly replied, "Okay! I'll be right there!"
She glanced at Sylvester one last time and told Lucas, "I have something to take care of. I'll be back soon. Please watch over him for me!" Then she hurried out.
In the doctor's office, Calliope sat across from Dr. Arnold, listening to the details about the heart donor, especially the cost.
The doctor was straightforward. "The surgery itself isn't very expensive, but the donor's family is extremely poor. They're asking for $100,000 as compensation, or they won't donate the heart. This is a tricky situation, and the donor only has a few days left. I suggest you decide quickly; any delay will render the heart unusable."
Money seemed to control everything, making Calliope feel frustrated. $100,000 was a huge amount for her right now, but how could she ignore David's illness?
Seeing her silence, the doctor continued, "Indeed, $100,000 is not a small amount. Think it over carefully. If you decide, please notify me immediately. Time is of the essence."
