Chapter 89
"No. Why are you so nosy? There's nothing big going on, stop digging." Jenny clearly didn't want to talk about those two years, like she had a ton of secrets to keep.
Calliope tugged on Jenny's sleeve. "Jenny, come on, spill it. It's not just Ava, I wanna know too. What really went down two years ago?"
Seeing their intense reaction to the bracelet, could it be tied to what happened back then?
Seeing Calliope's persistence, Jenny sighed, sat down, and started explaining, "Actually, this bracelet used to belong to Zoey!"
"The Zoey who died?" Ava was shocked. This whole thing had a creepy vibe. What did the sudden appearance of this bracelet mean?
Zoey? Calliope shivered. Why did Zoey seem to be everywhere, like everything was connected to her? What was going on?
"Who's Zoey? Is she really dead? Don't start with ghost stories, I don't buy that stuff." Calliope looked skeptical.
Jenny lowered her voice. "Hear me out, and you might change your mind. There's a lot of weird stuff in this world."
"Jenny, hurry up and tell us!" Ava was bursting with curiosity, ready for the story. Her gut told her the Moore family's secret had to be juicy.
"Mrs. Moore, everyone got it wrong. Zoey and Mr. Sylvester Moore weren't a thing. A guy like Mr. Sylvester Moore wouldn't go for a girl like her. Zoey was two years younger than Mr. Sylvester Moore, but she was ambitious. What she really wanted was Mr. John Moore." Jenny's words showed her dislike and even disgust for Zoey.
Listening, Calliope couldn't help but mutter, "Her taste is really something. I thought she was after Sylvester, but she was aiming for John."
"How did she die?" Calliope pressed on, and Ava nodded, just as curious.
Talking about this, Jenny looked puzzled. "I don't know the details, it's too secretive. Probably only Mr. John Moore and Mr. Michael Moore know. Not many people are in the loop. Some say Mr. Sylvester Moore killed her, others say he didn't. But I trust Mr. Sylvester Moore. However, what happened next was even weirder."
"Go on." Calliope was hooked, getting more curious about Zoey. A young woman who could tempt the sly John must have had something special.
Jenny looked around and lowered her voice. "After Zoey died, strange things started happening a lot in the Moore family. At first, they would hear Zoey's crying in the middle of the night, very clearly, it was her voice, super creepy. But if Zoey was scary, Mr. Sylvester Moore was the real devil! Mr. Sylvester Moore was fearless, and gradually, Zoey's crying stopped."
She continued, "But after that, Zoey's bracelet kept showing up at the Moore house. They'd toss it, but it always came back, like it was haunted by Zoey's vengeful spirit. Anyone who picked it up had bad luck! A gardener thought it was valuable and took it home, but the next day he got into a car accident and broke his leg, right where Zoey died. Creepy, right?"
Ava shivered. "Jenny, stop, it's freaking me out. Did Zoey really turn into an evil spirit?"
Calliope, though, wasn't buying it. "Maybe it's just a coincidence."
Jenny shook her head. "Let me finish. The gardener was so scared he never touched the bracelet again. Others who didn't believe in the curse picked it up, and they all had accidents. The weirdest part was, no matter how many times they threw it away, it always ended up in Mr. Sylvester Moore's room, until he finally threw it into the fire and burned it. Only then did things calm down."
"Burned it? Then what's this on my wrist?" Calliope felt a chill. The bracelet sounded seriously creepy. She suddenly thought of Samuel, who had said Sylvester would like it.
The more she thought about it, the more freaked out she got. Could that guy be a ghost? But Zoey was a woman, so who was that guy?
"Because it happened two years ago, my memory's a bit fuzzy. When I saw the bracelet on your wrist today, I felt something was off but couldn't place it. Until Mr. Sylvester Moore got mad, I suddenly realized this bracelet is bad news. Don't keep it! Listen to Mr. Sylvester Moore!" Jenny warned seriously. "Also, it's best not to go out much right now. Bad things happen whenever the bracelet shows up!"
Calliope stayed quiet for a long time, deep in thought. Even though she now knew Zoey's identity and what had happened, she was still clueless about the details, like why Sylvester hated Zoey so much and what had caused his drastic change in personality.
The turmoil in Calliope's heart gradually settled. Sylvester's earlier attitude had really ticked her off, but thinking about his good intentions, her anger quietly faded.
Entering the room, she saw Sylvester standing by the floor-to-ceiling window, a cigarette between his lips, the red glow flickering in the night. The swirling smoke couldn't hide the complex emotions in his eyes.
Calliope approached quietly, gently tugging on Sylvester's sleeve, still showing some resentment on her face, stammering, "I really didn't think it would be this serious. Don't be mad, okay?"
Sylvester scrutinized Calliope, who was proud even when apologizing.
"Are you saying this is all my fault?" Sylvester's deep eyes locked onto her, a mocking smile playing on his lips. He took a deep drag on his cigarette, and a cloud of smoke blew straight into Calliope's face.
