Chapter 82
No matter who this was, their goal was crystal clear: they wanted to dig up the secret from two years ago and get revenge for Zoey.
"Now that Calliope's pregnant too, we can't let this get out. She can't find out either, 'cause I'm worried they'll come after her next," Michael said, looking sharp and lost in thought.
John's face tightened at this. He ran through a mental list of who could be behind this scheme. After years in the business world, he had plenty of enemies and had ticked off even more people. But only a handful knew about what happened back then.
Michael turned around and said, "I'll head to Frostholm in a few days. I'll get Chris to find me a neurosurgeon. If he operates, there's about a forty percent chance it'll work."
"Make sure to protect Calliope's baby at home. Maybe this kid is Sylvester's..." Michael trailed off, feeling a pang of heartache, and shook his head helplessly.
John nodded. "Got it, Dad."
Ever since Calliope found out she was pregnant, she had been living like royalty.
"Calliope! You can't wear those shoes; you need these flats. They're safer!"
Seeing her about to slip on a random pair, Jenny quickly swapped them for some flats and helped her put them on. After learning about Calliope's pregnancy, the Moore family had bought over a dozen pairs of comfy, stylish flats just for her.
Calliope was speechless. Was all this really necessary? It was just a pregnancy! She didn't even feel pregnant; the doctor had said there were no signs yet, so how did she suddenly become a pregnant woman?
"I'm not that fragile, and these aren't even high heels," she said. Growing up in a tough environment, she wasn't used to this kind of pampering.
Jenny shook her head. "The first three months are crucial. You have to be super careful; otherwise, it could be bad if something goes wrong."
The Moore family was treating her like she was made of glass, but she was secretly plotting how to get rid of the baby without anyone noticing.
The more they fussed, the more suffocated and trapped Calliope felt. If she aborted the baby, the whole Moore family would probably lose it.
Calliope was taking a walk in the garden with Ava and couldn't help but sigh. Seeing this, Ava said, "Mrs. Moore, why the long face? Pregnancy is a good thing! Why are you sighing?"
As they walked, they saw the butler directing the gardeners to dig up some camellia trees. Calliope frowned. "Why are they digging up the trees?"
"You don't get it, do you? It's because of you, Calliope!" Ava said proudly. Calliope looked at herself in surprise. "Me? What does this have to do with me?" Then she added, "Is it because of the pregnancy?"
Ava nodded seriously. "Of course! I heard camellia trees can mess with pregnant women, so Mr. John Moore ordered us to yank them all out to make sure you have the perfect environment for the baby!"
Calliope felt the urge to bolt and exclaimed, "Oh my God, this is too much!"
She glanced down at her belly. This kid was really living the high life! Not even born yet and already getting the royal treatment. She finally got why Sylvester turned out so spoiled;being pampered like this, it was no wonder he was so arrogant!
"Mr. Sylvester Moore is the only son in the Moore family. He's got two older sisters and a younger sister. Sylvester's been coddled since he was a kid, and now his situation is pretty unique. We're all scared Mr. Moore might suddenly die without leaving any trace in this world," Ava said, understanding John's actions, with a hint of sadness.
Calliope was stunned by Ava's explanation, and a deep sense of guilt welled up inside her. But this baby really couldn't be born.
After a while, Ava helped her back to the bedroom and reminded her before leaving, "Oh, and Mrs. Moore! Mr. Moore said you shouldn't play with your phone anymore; it has radiation."
Calliope didn't care and accidentally sat on the remote control, turning on the TV, which startled her.
But the entertainment news on TV made her heart race!
"Next up, some breaking news. Yesterday afternoon, our long-lost Sylvester suddenly made an appearance. Whenever Sylvester shows up, it's big news. He reposted a girl's photo on X and openly admitted that she is his wife. This news caused quite a stir! In just one afternoon, it sparked a lot of debate. The girl in the photo is pure and lovely; we wonder which family's socialite she is."
At that moment, the phone rang abruptly, and an unknown tension crept into her heart.
Calliope glanced at the phone in panic. Who was it? What did this call mean?
Her heart pounded, and fear spread quietly. If the news got out and her true identity was revealed, she couldn't imagine the shame.
She almost couldn't breathe just imagining the mocking and ridiculing gazes.
Ava stepped forward lightly. "Calliope, the phone is ringing. Aren't you going to answer? It's Mr. Moore's call."
Ava picked up the phone and handed it to Calliope. Calliope snapped back to reality, took the phone, and saw "Sylvester" on the screen. She swiped to answer, her voice calm and steady. "Hello."
But on the other end, Sylvester's angry voice came through. "Who allowed you to answer the phone? Don't you know it has radiation?"
Calliope suddenly felt much clearer. Sylvester was just looking for trouble. Was he looking for a fight?
"Sylvester! My phone kept ringing. Should I just let it ring?" Calliope retorted.
