Chapter 145

Not far away, David had been watching Calliope's actions. Seeing her leave, he followed her to the back garden. He wanted to explain everything to clear up Calliope's misunderstanding.

The back garden was particularly quiet due to the noise from the front hall, with a slight chill in the air. Looking up, there were only a few stars, and the moon in the night sky seemed lonely, just like Calliope's desolate and solitary mood at the moment.

She walked towards the distant pavilion, hugging her arms and trying hard to hold back the tears in her eyes.

She had thought that her long efforts would change David's view of her; she believed that after the betrayal, Lily would no longer have any ties with him.

However, what she saw today was the real truth.

David walked into the garden, saw Calliope standing there, hesitated for a moment, and then approached her.

"The weather is getting colder at night, put on a coat to avoid catching a cold." David gently draped his coat over her shoulders but didn't know how to start the conversation.

"Even if I catch a cold, I don't need your fake concern." Calliope turned her face away, her eyes filled with sarcasm and anger. "Do you think that intimate scene just now doesn't explain anything? What else do you have to explain?"

Facing such questioning, David showed a pained expression and tried to persuade her, "I believe you are very angry right now, but Calliope, please listen to my explanation."

"Now I finally see your true nature!" Calliope sneered coldly. "You appeared together arm in arm, what else is there to explain? What other excuses do you want to make up to deceive me?"

"No matter how you view this, there are some truths I must tell you." David put on a serious expression and continued to explain, "Indeed, there were feelings between Lily and me in the past, but that is all in the past. After I survived the heart transplant, I realized that you are the one truly worth cherishing..."

"So according to you, attending this event was purely for business?" Calliope interrupted him with a disdainful eyebrow raise, "To make your lies seem real, you even came up with such a seamless excuse?"

"Whether you believe it or not, that's the truth. If you don't believe me, I can go find Lily right now and explain everything, but it might make the company's situation more complicated." David said with a troubled look, hoping to convince Calliope.

Calliope sneered coldly, "Do whatever you want, I don't care!" She then took off the coat and threw it back at David.

At that moment, Nina, who had come out for some fresh air, saw this scene. She was still jealous of Calliope and Sylvester's close relationship. She quickly ran into the banquet hall to tell Sylvester what she had seen, then followed him out, eager to watch the drama unfold.

Seeing Sylvester approaching angrily, Calliope calmly said, "I ran into him by coincidence, you don't need to be so agitated."

Before she could finish, Sylvester grabbed her waist and pulled her to his side, glaring at David fiercely, "David, if you want to stay in Winner Group, you'd better stay away from my wife! If I see this again, don't blame me for being rude!"

Thinking about David's feelings for Calliope made Sylvester furious. But Calliope still liked this bad man David, making him wish he could tie them together and throw them to Antarctica.

Nina had intended to stir up trouble, hoping to see Sylvester scold Calliope. But to her disappointment, he only warned David and then took Calliope back inside, leaving Nina frustrated but having no choice but to follow them into the banquet hall.

Watching Calliope and Sylvester's backs, David sighed deeply, shook his head, and followed them into the banquet hall.

Inside the banquet hall, Calliope stayed close to Sylvester, her mind filled with David's words until she saw a familiar yet strange face. Her body trembled slightly. How could it be him? That face had appeared in her dreams countless times. Was he also part of this circle?

The man clearly noticed her presence, or rather, he intended for her to notice him. He kept staring at her with a playful look, making her very uncomfortable.

Time seemed to freeze, and Calliope felt a bit dizzy, her eyes only seeing Samuel's figure.

"Are you feeling unwell?" Sylvester asked, noticing the slight tremor in the arm he was holding.

"What? No, nothing. I need to go to the restroom." She quickly found an excuse to escape and ran to the restroom, gasping for air.

Standing in front of the mirror, she calmed down a bit while fixing her clothes. Just as she was about to leave, she opened the door and found Samuel standing outside.

He gave a wicked smile, "What's the matter? We're not strangers."

Hearing this, Calliope instinctively took a few steps back, "What do you want?"

"Don't worry, I just want to see how you're doing." Before he finished speaking, his gaze had already settled on her abdomen, with a malicious smile on his lips.

Feeling goosebumps all over, Calliope protected her belly with her hands, "I don't know what you're talking about. There's nothing between us."

"Aren't you curious about who I am? Aren't you worried about the child in your belly?"

Despite her inner vigilance, she had to admit she was indeed puzzled by Samuel. "Who exactly are you? What do you want?"

"My purpose is simple, I just want to see what your child will look like in the future." He said, reaching out to touch her belly.

"Don't touch me! Get away!" She screamed in fright.

Samuel looked up and smiled softly, "The child in your belly can't really be that useless Sylvester's, can it?"

Useless? He actually called Sylvester useless. Did he have a grudge against Sylvester?

Calliope's curiosity about Samuel increased, but for now, it was better to leave quickly. "Who the child's father is has nothing to do with you. Thank you for your concern, but I need to leave."

"If the child is born like Sylvester, would you strangle him? What if he's born mentally disabled or as short-lived as Sylvester?" Samuel stared at Calliope with gritted teeth, his eyes filled with anger.

"The condition of my unborn child is none of your concern. Please move aside!" Calliope glared at Samuel, furious that he would curse her unborn child. Samuel's heart was truly cruel!

"What if I don't move? Are you going to get Sylvester to come and hit me?" Samuel recalled how Sylvester had almost died in a fight over those videos of Calliope six months ago. At that time, Samuel thought Sylvester was surely dead, but Lucas had said Sylvester was only pretending to be dead, and it was all a setup by John.

Whenever Samuel thought of John, he would remember his early-deceased daughter Zoey. His hatred for the Moore family was deep-rooted.
