Chapter 124- Gnawing Feeling

Lexy

The celebration last night was a great success. We have 4 members from other packs join us. What surprised me about it was that 2 of them were males and chose to move with their mates than have their mates move to their pack. We did lose a couple of ladies, but I’m proud of the relationships we are building.

In 2 weeks will have the meeting with all the packs to establish a full alliance. It’ll also help with trading and helping each other. But since CJ has taken over that, I’ve been working on purchasing new land to make room for the next step of plan I’m working on.

My thoughts were broken by the sound of giggles. My pups came running in from spending the day with their grandmas. “How was your day Kashi?” my mom asks. “Slowly putting the pieces together for their future” I respond with a smile while hugging my pups. I kissed their heads and asked them, “Did you play a lot with grandmas?”. “Yeah!” they said in unison while jumping.

“Are you ready to help mami cook?” I asked them excitedly. Their eyes lid up and smiled from ear to ear. “Go wash your hands and agree what you want to eat for dinner, ok?”. They nodded their heads in agreement and took off. “Thanks for everything mom. I love you” I tell her before she heads out.

I went into the kitchen with the pups and began to make empanadillas de carne (beef). They chose their uncles favorite Puerto Rican snack that can also be a meal after eating enough. While the meat was cooking they wanted to make dessert. They wanted cinnamon rolls with fruit on top.

After 2 hours in the kitchen, we finally finished everything. As we were setting the table CJ walked in through the door. We don’t cook as much as we used to since we enjoy eating with the pack. But from time to time, I take time just for us.

“Hey there, it smells amazing in here!” CJ exclaimed, a warm smile spreading across his face as he approached us. “What’s cooking?”

“Empanadillas de carne and cinnamon rolls with fruit,” I replied, feeling a sense of pride as my pups eagerly shared their excitement about the meal we had prepared together. CJ’s eyes lit up with anticipation, and he leaned down to give each of the pups a loving squeeze.

“Sounds delicious! You three did a fantastic job,” he praised, ruffling their hair affectionately. “Now let’s dig in and enjoy this feast.”

The dining room was filled with laughter and animated conversations as we shared our meal. It was in these simple moments, around the dinner table, that I felt the true essence of family and the bonds that held us together. The world outside might be filled with uncertainties and challenges, but within these walls, there was only love, unity, and the promise of a bright future.

As the evening drew to a close, and the pups were tucked into bed, I sat with CJ on the porch, enjoying the cool night breeze. We talked about the plans for the upcoming meeting with the other packs, the land we hoped to acquire, and our dreams for the future of our tribe.

“Whatever happens, we’ll face it together,” CJ said, taking my hand in his. “We’ve come this far, and I have no doubt that our tribe will continue to thrive, no matter the obstacles.”

I began to feel something strange, and I couldn’t put my finger on it. I kept pushing it to the back of my head while I focused on the upcoming conference.

One week before the conference and another checkup with the same results. Dr. Bennet took some blood work and now we are waiting for the results. I couldn’t push my thoughts to the back of my head anymore and CJ picked up on it quickly.

“What’s wrong my fiery queen?” he asked sweetly. “I’m not sure. I have this nagging feeling that keeps getting stronger the closer we get to the conference” I responded without catching my breath. “I don’t know if it has to do with it or something else. But I can’t push it to the back of my head anymore” I explained.

“If you’re feeling something go with it” he responded as he grabbed my face and kissed my head. That move washed away all my worries.
CJ

Lexy telling me a week before the conference that she’s having a feeling I’m going to listen to it. Her instincts have been right every single time. I was going to help her figure it out any way I could.

The week dragged on, each day filled with anticipation and a slight undercurrent of unease. Despite the cheerful facade I maintained for the sake of the pups and the tribe, CJ could sense the growing tension within me. Dr. Bennet's call finally came, and the results were inconclusive, leaving us with more questions than answers. It was then that I realized I needed to trust my instincts more than ever.

On the eve of the conference, CJ and I went through the final preparations, ensuring that every detail was meticulously planned. As we reviewed the agenda once more, CJ's unwavering support and confidence in me provided a much-needed anchor.

When the day of the conference arrived, we were greeted by representatives from all the country’s packs, each bringing their own set of concerns and aspirations. The discussions were intense, with debates ranging from territorial disputes to cooperative endeavors for the future. Throughout the day's proceedings, my nagging feeling persisted, growing stronger with each passing moment.

Suddenly, during critical negotiation, a realization struck me. It wasn't just the conference that was causing my unease; it was something deeper, a threat to our very existence as a tribe. I shared my concerns with CJ, who immediately called for a pause in the discussions.

After taking a 15-minute break to discuss things with CJ and let everyone calm down, we resumed the conference. Before we could even settle into the conversation a voice spoke up and brought chills to my whole body.
