Chapter 218- Through Pain and Power
Lexy
The day had been peaceful—almost deceptively so.
The sun stretched high over the training fields, its warmth spilling across the warriors below as they clashed and sparred under Tarria’s command. From where I stood, watching from the sidelines, the sight filled me with quiet pride.
Tarria moved across the field like she’d been born for this. Her voice carried confidence, her stance sure and commanding. Each warrior she trained—wolf, elite warriors, or guardian—listened to her with full respect. I could see how far she’d come. There was no hesitation in her anymore, no trace of the girl who once questioned the strength she carried.
My heart swelled watching her.
She had become the embodiment of balance—darkness and light, strength and grace. I saw myself in her once, but now, she stood entirely in her own right. That realization warmed me in ways I couldn’t explain.
The triplets fluttered restlessly within me, tiny surges of energy responding to the movement on the field. I placed a hand on my belly, smiling softly.
“I know,” I whispered. “You sense her too, don’t you?”
They always did. Tarria’s energy resonated with mine, and by extension, with them. It was comforting to feel their connection—to know that when the time came, she’d be someone they could trust, just as I did.
The scent of sweat and soil filled the air, mingled with laughter of my kids and the rhythmic sounds of combat. Tarria had divided the trainees into groups, moving between them with careful attention. I leaned against the tree, savoring the rare moment of calm. CJ will be home soon. The thought alone sent warmth through my chest.
He’d been away for days, finalizing the transition of Adrian’s old pack. I missed him terribly, but I knew he was doing what needed to be done. And when he returned, everything would feel whole again.
At least, that’s what I thought—until the wind changed.
It started as a whisper, a sudden chill threading through the heat. The triplets stirred sharply, and I frowned, straightening. The air thickened, humming with a strange, unstable energy that made the hair on my arms rise.
Then it hit me.
A sharp, searing pain cut through my body, stealing my breath. My hand flew to my stomach as the world tilted. Fire rippled beneath my skin, followed by a cold wave that left me trembling. I gasped, clutching the ground to keep from laying.
Not now…
The pain came again—stronger, deeper—rolling through me in merciless waves. My vision blurred, and I could feel my powers slipping loose, threads of energy cracking through the air around me.
“Lexy!” Tarria’s voice cut through the haze, sharp with alarm.
I turned toward her, trying to speak, but another contraction tore through me before I could form the words. The ground beneath my feet trembled. Light flared from my fingertips—uncontrolled, wild.
The warriors froze mid-combat. Tarria didn’t hesitate. She was already sprinting toward me, her power surging to meet mine. I tried to steady my breathing, to hold everything in, but it was too late. The energy pouring out of me wasn’t mine alone anymore—it was theirs too.
The triplets. They were ready.
And their combined energy was far too much for my body to contain.
Tarria reached me in seconds, catching me as my knees gave way when I stood up. The moment her hand touched mine, her smoke energy flowed outward, wrapping us both in a soft, cool shield that dampened the wild currents sparking off my body.
“It’s happening,” I breathed out between gasps. “Tarria… they’re coming.”
Her eyes widened, but she didn’t falter. “Hold on. I’ve got you, my Queen.”
The world blurred as she guided me through the chaos. I could barely focus—pain and power collided inside me, each contraction pulling at my control. I felt light, shadow, and heat tearing through my veins, desperate to escape.
Tarria shouted orders to the warriors behind her, her voice steady and sure even as the earth quaked beneath our feet. “Clear the path to the hospital—now! Move!”
Everything after that became a blur of movement and light. Tarria’s power carried us swiftly across the grounds, her shadow forming a protective cocoon around us. I tried to focus on the bond that tied me to CJ, but it flickered in and out—distant, unstable, like a candle in the wind.
CJ… please… hurry.
By the time Tarria rushed me through the hospital doors, I was shaking from the effort of holding back my powers. Dr. Bennett and her team were already waiting, calm but clearly on edge.
“She’s losing control,” Tarria warned as she helped lower me onto the bed.
Dr. Bennett’s voice was firm. “Then keep her grounded. I’ll handle the rest.”
I tried to speak—to tell her that I was fine—but another contraction hit, and this time my power exploded outward. The room flooded with golden light, heat radiating from me like the sun itself. Monitors flickered and glass rattled in its frames.
Tarria moved immediately, her shadow expanding to absorb the excess energy, grounding it before it could hurt anyone. I could feel her presence anchoring me, a tether pulling me back from the edge.
“Focus on my voice,” she said softly, leaning close. “You’ve got this, Lexy. Breathe with me.”
I gritted my teeth, forcing the power down, trying to breathe through the pain. But every time I managed to suppress it, another surge followed. The triplets weren’t just coming—they were fighting to be born, their energy bursting through me in uncontrolled waves.
“CJ…” I whispered. “He’s… on his way…”
Tarria nodded, brushing a strand of hair from my face. “Then hold on for him. You can do this.”
Her confidence steadied me. I took a deep breath, letting her shadow merge with my aura, cooling the fiery chaos beneath my skin. Slowly, the light dimmed, though the pain didn’t ease.
Dr. Bennett gave quick instructions to the nurses. “She’s dilating fast. Keep her stable. Don’t let her power spike.”
I tried to follow her words, to center myself, but the bond between CJ and me pulsed faintly again. For a moment, I felt him—his urgency, his fear, his determination cutting through the distance.
“Lexy…” His voice was faint but real in my mind.
“I’m here,” I whispered back, tears forming. “The babies are coming.”
The connection wavered as another contraction struck, harder than before. My control slipped again, a surge of white-hot energy crackling across the room. Tarria responded instantly, reinforcing her power, the air filling with swirling smoke and faint sparks of light.
“Stay with me!” she shouted, her power pushing back against mine.
I screamed through the pain, gripping her hand. The energy between us burned, then steadied—like two storms colliding and finding balance.
Through the haze, I caught glimpses of Dr. Bennett’s focused movements, the nurses’ calm urgency. But all I truly saw was Tarria—her unwavering eyes, her steady breath, her strength wrapping around me like armor.
And through it all, I felt CJ’s presence at the edge of the bond—faint but pulsing stronger with every mile he crossed.
“Tarria,” I whispered hoarsely, voice trembling. “He’s coming.”
She smiled faintly, tightening her grip. “Then let’s make sure everything’s ready when he gets here.”
The pain came again, fierce and consuming, but I held on. Not just to Tarria’s hand—but to the bond that connected me to the man racing through the skies, and the life that surged within me.
Because no matter how wild the storm grew, I wasn’t facing it alone.
