Chapter 25- The Path 2

I continued walking south still not sure if I was heading the right way. But after talking to CJ, I was in high spirits. I knew he was looking for me and I was doing everything I could to make it back to him. I reached a swamp-like area that extended my walk. I continued to walk until night fall reached. I found a huge tree with an opening almost looking like a cave. I snacked on some food, drank a bit more water and turned on the phone. While the phone powered on, I put on the shirt I had found in the cabin. Mosquitos are killer out here and I’m nobody’s snack.
Right when I was grabbing the phone, the phone when off and it was CJ calling. I answered immediately. “Hey CJ” I said enthusiastically. “Hey my fiery Phoenix. We found the gas station you mentioned. And have begun to move south-west” he responded sweetly but firmly. “I passed a swamp-like area that took me 45 minutes to get around it. That was about 2 hours ago. Right now, I’m inside a huge tree with an opening almost like a cave” I gave him as much detail as I could. “Will get to you soon. Just..” Before he could finish his sentence, I heard someone interrupt and say something to him. Next thing he says “They found one of your rocks We are getting closer. I will see you soon. Rest for tonight”. “I knew you would. I’ll call you when I wake up. Good night” I said to him and hung up. I then turned the phone off and went to sleep more relaxed.
The next day I woke up before the sun even came out. I turned the phone on while I rinsed my mouth with my water and ate a snack. I decided to call CJ while beginning my walk. CJ keeps answering on the first ring. “Morning muñeca. How did you sleep?” he sounded concerned. “Morning. Yeah. I began to walk already”. “We passed the swamp-like area. We are less than 2 hours away. Find somewhere to hide”. I was relieved. “See you soon. Bye” I responded and hung up. Battery was at 20%. I shut it off. I didn’t want to walk too much since they found my trail but didn’t want to leave a small gap if that guy catches up to me. I reached a spring and watched my face in it. I decided to hide here when I noticed a waterfall. It had enough gap to keep me hidden and my scent low. I called CJ and let him know where I was going to be hiding. Now to wait to be found. But by who first.
CJ
I really was trying to keep myself calm and not take off like a mad wolf. I knew we were making progress, but it was killing me not to have her with me. Everyone kept taking turns to keep me distracted. Every time I got a call from her my heart wanted to jump out of my chest. Hearing her voice would give me some type of peace, even if for a moment. We weren’t too far from her but for me it was like being in different countries. The great thing is we were staying coordinated and moving with ease. When we were less than an hour away from her I picked up a repugnant scent that pulled me to a stop. Is the same as the night of our birthday. “ROGUE!!” I growled and caused everyone to stop. “The rogue is on her trail. He’s a couple of minutes ahead of us”. We picked up our pace to a fast jog. We didn’t want to exert more energy than needed in case we had to fight.

I can’t believe how much trouble that girl has been to me. I spent a whole damn day looking for her and couldn’t find her anywhere. I can’t pick up her scent since I sprayed her, and it lasts 24 hours. I decided to go back to the truck when I went looking for my phone and it wasn’t on me. I got in the truck and went looking for it but couldn’t find it anywhere. I started thinking I lost it, and it was pissing me off more. When I find her she’ll pay for it. The next day the sun woke me up. I got up and went back to it. I had to find her no matter what. If I didn’t bring her to him I would be as good as dead. And THAT wasn’t going to happen. She would die before I do. As the sun was setting, I was seething from not finding any trace of her. Right when I was about to give up I picked up a slight scent. I wasn’t sure but it was the first time I’ve picked up any scent in the area since I began the search.
I decided to follow it even though it was hard to fully pick it up on how light the scent was. I had to take a break when nighttime hit. I took a spot under a tree and just kept playing back how she could have woken up so fast. She was supposed to last passed out until I got to my pack. The thinking was driving me crazy, so I closed my eyes and went to sleep. Next day the sun had woken me up yet again. From there I went back to try to pick up the scent but this time it became easier since the scent was a bit stronger. It was definitely her, finally. Oh, I was going to enjoy catching her for putting all this work for me. I knew I was closing in with her scent getting stronger. But I was still 20 steps behind.
CJ
His scent was not far off. I hate the smell of rogue. We decided to split the group. One would follow the scent of the rogue and my group would follow her trail. I was just hoping we would get to her before he dared to put a finger on her. I would have loved to be the one to find him and kill him, but Lexy comes first. I found the tree she slept in and felt a bit of relief since I knew we were close to her. I can smell her beautiful scent. I sprinted from that point. Everyone followed my lead but told me to watch around for the rogue. I decided to slow back down and continue to be smart for her safety. ‘Will be there really soon my Phoenix. I’ll see you soon’ I said to myself. For a moment I picked up the rogue scent, but it wasn’t close enough or too strong. That put my thoughts in overdrive that he didn’t get to her already. I sniffed again and it smelled like the wind was carrying his scent. That told me he wasn’t far off. Just a little bit off direction.
