Jennifer
As we approached my dad’s house, I could see him standing outside clearly waiting for me. I want to make it clear it was just turning 12 which means I wasn’t late but still he was standing outside as the car approached something was different today. Romeo’s driver wanted to get out to open the door for me but I stopped him. An Uber driver won’t do that I told him. “What time should I come back?” He asked. “Can I phone you?” “Yes, off course.” He gave me his card I saw his name was Elijah. “Thank you, Elijah.” “Pleasure Jennifer, good luck.” He said making big eyes towards my dad. “Thank you, looks like I’m going to need it.” I got out and put a huge smile on my face “Hi dad.” “You late.” He said turning around and walking into the house. “Technically I’m not late it’s 12 right now.” “Jennifer Rynn, I raised you better than that if you are not early you are late.” “Sorry dad.” I knew I had to apologize before he just goes on and on. “You do know time is money right.” He went on “Dad I said I’m sorry okay can we leave it.” I raised my voice at him. I had enough of everything and clearly, it’s going to come out at lunch. He turned around and gave me a look that said he was very disappointed in me. Oh well what’s new. I thought. We went to his office to go through the weeks social events that I need to accompany him to. He sat behind his desk and I in front. Peter came in with a tray of coffee, “Thank you Peter.” “My pleasure Jennifer.” Then he left us again.
“How is business going?” my dad asked. Every Sunday the same questions leading to the same arguments. “Good thank you.” “You not done with that yet?” Here we go “No” “Are you ever going to give up on that hobby?” “No dad and asking me the same thing every Sunday is not going to change the answers.” “Well then if you won’t stop this silliness you have to get married I need someone to take over the business.” I didn’t know what to say I just looked at him stunned. “Don’t look at me like that, you need a husband that can take over the business.” “Are you serious?” “Do you know me as someone who makes jokes?” “I will marry when I’m ready and I’m not going to marry just for someone to take over your business.” “You will do as you are told. If you don’t want the business then I need someone that will want it.” I got up and almost screamed at him “No DAD I will not.” “Sit down Jennifer and behave yourself like a lady.” “I will not you are already trying to rule my life I’m not going to let you force me into marrying someone besides with all the events I need to go to with you where should I get time to meet someone to marry?” “I’ll find you someone.” He said as if it was nothing. “Are you fucking kidding me?” I screamed. “Jennifer Rynn remember I’m still your dad.” “Yes, but we don’t live in the Middle Ages anymore where fathers chose their daughters brides.” “If you not going to find someone and you not interested in the business then I will.” I walked towards the door and ripped it open I heard my dad scream “Jennifer get back here!” I took out my cellphone and called Elijah he couldn’t be far away “Jennifer?” He answered. “Can you come and get me?” “I’m on my way.” He didn’t ask any questions he just told me his on his way. I stormed out of the house and started to walk down the drive way. My father was still screaming behind me “Jennifer get back here. I’m not done talking to you.” But I ignored him, he went way to far today. As I reached the entrance of my father’s estate Elijah stopped next to me, I got in and just told him “Drive.” As we drove away from my childhood home I started to cry. I couldn’t believe my father went there marriage and he wants to chose him if I don’t get someone. Is he out of his mind.
We arrived back at Romeo’s house before 1 pm. Romeo came walking out the house when he heard the car. When we stopped and I opened the back door he came to me immediately looking surprised. “Jenn what happened?” I was just to mad to talk. I walked passed him into the house. He walked with me into the house and as we passed his mini bar I stopped and poured myself something I don’t even know what it was. I downed it in one shot and cough afterwards it was so strong. “Jenn?” Romeo asked again very concerned. “What did your father do?” “Well Romeo apparently I need to get a husband as soon as possible to take over the business because I don’t want to give up on my hobby.” I basically screamed “You not serious?” Romeo said in shock. “Unfortunately, I’m dead serious.” “What else did he say?” “I didn’t give him time he said if I don’t get a husband, he will choose one for me.” “No fucking way?” “Yes, Romeo we are back in the Middle Ages where your father gets you a man.” Romeo pulled me towards him and hugged me. “I’ll have a talk with him.” Romeo said “God no Romeo you can’t do that. What would you even say?” “Jenn I won’t come right out and talk about you. I will take him out and we will talk about life I have a way of getting information out of people Jenn without them even noticing they are giving more away than they wanted to.” “It probable can’t hurt but I’m not going out with him this week I left before we even spoke about my daughter commitments for the week.” “That’s better like that Jenn then I have time to talk with him.” “I’m warning you know his going to be in a very bad mood. He hates going to social gatherings and going alone is even worse for him.” “Don’t you worry I know him I can handle him.” “Thank you, Romeo” “Anything for you Jenn.” “Even marriage?” I joked with him
