Chapter 98

Jennifer

I got to work much later than normal, I greeted John like nothing was wrong, then I went to the kitchen. “Morning Eleanor, Matilda.” “Morning Jenn.” Both of them said. “How are you child?” Eleanor came to me and asked. “I’m good thank you Eleanor, I need to apologize to you for Romeo’s behavior.” “Nonsense.” “Can we go and sit in front I need to talk to you.” “Yes, off course Matilda you still good here?” “All good.” She said. I took Eleanor to my favorite seat in the bakery. “Eleanor I’m really sorry about Romeo he should never have accused you.” “Nonsense his was just looking out for you I would have done the same.” “You wouldn’t have?” “Off course I will. Have you decided what to do with him?” She whispered. “I’m going to fire him as soon as the rush is over. I already advertised the barista post and have interviews today.” “That’s good.” “I have more news.” “Oh, do tell.” “You know the place I wanted on the strip to open the other bakery?” “Yes” “Well the building belongs to Romeo and he gifted me the space as an engagement present, we are opening another bakery, Eleanor. Can you believe it?” She jumped up and grabbed me hugging me. “Oh, child all your dreams are coming true, I’m so so proud of you.” “Thank you, Eleanor, but this means I need a manager for this one, are you interested?” “Off course I am, thank you Jenn.” “Don’t thank me it’s going to be a lot of work. Do you have more friends that needs an income and are willing to start so early in the morning?” “I’m sure I can find more but I do have a request.” “I’m listening?” “I’m suggesting you get a barista and a cashier that way the bakers can go home earlier.” “That’s not a bad idea Eleanor, I’ll interview for that as well, thank you.” “No problem now you have to excuse me I need to go check on the last batch of cupcakes.” “Thank you, Eleanor.”

When the doors open it the morning rush stormed in and it was busy for at least 2 hours. I tried my best to stay on my seat and look at the people’s CV’s I’ll be interviewing today. I caught myself a few times behind the counter of the bakery helping customers but that is my passion helping I won’t say growing my business is as big as a passion as seeing the joy on my customers faces. But then if I open another bakery more people will be able to get my cupcakes and now muffins thanks to Elijah. Talking about him when I looked out the window, I saw him walking around the car while he was on the phone with someone then he went down on his hands and knees and looked underneath the car which I found strange but perhaps that is his job. When the rush was over, I called John to come have a seat with me he was still totally in the dark about what was going on or the fact that I knew he was working for my father. “Yes Jennifer, can I help you with something?” He asked “Please sit-down John.” “I can’t who’s going to help the customers?” Luckily Eleanor was behind the counter when he ask. “Eleanor is there.” “You know she doesn’t know how the coffee machine works.” “Well then she’ll have to figure it out and soon.” He looked at me dumbstruck. “Why?” “John, I’m firing you.” “What you can’t I didn’t do anything wrong; you have no grounds to fire me.” He went on. “John, we don’t have a contract you are a casual I can fire you whenever I want.” “No, you can’t.” “This is my business John and although I’m sure you going to miss the two salaries you are receiving at the moment; I just don’t want spies in my bakery.” “I don’t know what you are talking about.” “John please stop making a fool of me you’ve done it for long enough. I know you are working for my dad.” “I would never.” “John my father told me, he also told me you wouldn’t have jumped in to help me when Kyle was choking me out.” “I’m not getting paid for shit like that. I’m not your fucking bodyguard.” “There is the real John, nice to meet you, now get out of my bakery.” I must have raised my voice a little too much because Elijah was entering the bakery looking straight at me. “You are making a mistake Jennifer.” John said. “I’m not now please leave.” He was still standing in front of me. I don’t know why maybe he thought I’ll change my mind but Elijah walked closer “I’m very sure I heard her tell you to get out of the bakery. Do you need help?” Elijah asked him. “No, fine I’m going.” “Thank you, Elijah.” He just winked at me.

Before my first applicant came in the afternoon rush started so I went and stood behind the coffee machine and Eleanor at the cashier, we made a good team. We got through the afternoon rush without any problems, take that John, I thought to myself. I left Eleanor behind the counter when my first applicant came in, it was a girl she was 19 years old and needed a job while she studies at night. I felt sorry for her and asked her if she ever work as a barista before which she truthfully answered as no. Then I asked her if she worked as a cashier before and luckily for me, she did. I asked her if she wanted to have a trial run and if everything goes well, she can start tomorrow. She was over the moon. I should stop feeling sorry for the students that is the trap I felt in with John but I was sure Sarah the new cashier does not know my dad.

I went through more interviews and got my cashier and barista. I also had a cashier and barista for the new bakery as well. That is if they didn’t find anything else in the meantime. Taking everything in consideration I would say it was a very productive day. At around 3 pm I received a text from Romeo

“Hi Darling

I’m so sorry to do this to you but I have a black-tie event tonight. I totally forgot about it. Will you please go with me? I won’t be mad if you say no.”

I wasn’t in a mood for one of those functions because I also know my dad and his friends will be there but Romeo asked so nicely and he gave me the option of saying no. I’ve never had that option before. I sent him a message back;

“I’d love to.”
