Chapter 104 First Fight

Sunday morning, Andrea noticed Case was still in a foul mood. She’d thought having her there had made him feel better, had taken his mind off of Jones’s dirty racing the day before, but he had very little to say that morning as he got ready to meet with his team before qualifying started.

It made her uneasy. She’d never seen him like this before. Most of the time, Case was laidback and easy going, but his disposition was completely different that morning, and it was evident he was still upset about the situation with Jones.

“Are you sure you don’t want to talk about it?” Andrea asked him, once they were done eating breakfast.

“We did talk about.” He took a sip of his coffee. “I told you. I’m p*ssed he wrecked me. What else is there to say?”

“I don’t know. But you seem… really angry about it.”

“I’m not angry.” His expression didn’t match his words. “It is what it is.”

“At least it wasn’t the big race.” She was trying to be positive, but that just made him scowl.

“Any wreck, any loss, sucks, Andrea. Whether it’s a points race or not.” He shook his head and set the mug of coffee he’d been drinking down. “I’m going out for some air.”

“Oh, okay.”

“What?” he asked, as if she’d said something that implied she didn’t want him to go.

“Nothing.”

“It has to be something.”

“No, it’s just… your meeting is soon. I can’t go to it. I just thought… we could spend some more time together, that’s all. I have to leave early tomorrow.”

“I remember. God, Andrea, can’t I have five freaking minutes to catch my breath?”

Her eyes widened. She couldn’t believe he was being so rude. “Sure. Take your time.”

She tried not to make a face that implied that she didn’t mean it, and Case walked out the door.

Andrea wanted to cry. They hadn’t had fight—not since they’d officially started dating anyway—and this seemed like a fight to her. She hated it.

Case came back a few minutes later, but he was still not himself. He sat on the couch and checked his phone for a few moments, which seemed to make him angrier, and then he got up and said, “I’ve gotta go to my meeting.”

“Okay.” Andrea knew she couldn’t go. “I guess I’ll see you after?”

“I guess. Qualifying is different here. You know that, right? Only the pole positions count today. The rest of it will be settled on Thursday during the duals. So I’ve got to have my head in the game.”

“Are you saying if I’m around you’ll be distracted?” Now, Andrea was starting to get a little angry.

“No, I’m not saying that at all. I’m just saying, I’ll see you if I can, but it depends on how long it takes the meeting to get over.”

“If you want me to just stay here, I will, Case. I didn’t come here to cause problems.”

“I didn’t say that, Andrea!” He yanked on his hair with both hands for a second and then dropped his hands. “Stop putting words in my mouth.”

“I’m not. I’m volunteering. I’m saying , if having me out there will mess you up, I’ll just stay here out of your way.”

“Fine. Stay here, go out there, I don’t care. But I’ve gotta go, and I don’t have time to talk about it right now, all right?” Case walked out of the trailer, letting the door slam, and a few seconds later, she heard his golf cart fire out and throw gravel as he hurried away from the motor coach—away from her.

Andrea couldn’t control her tears now. The last thing she wanted was to make the situation more difficult for Case. She’d thought her being there had made him happy. He’d called her his good luck charm, after all. Maybe he thought her presence had actually been bad luck, that it had been her fault he’d crashed. In a way, maybe it had been. Gordo and Whiskey were both mad at him because of her, weren’t they? Because of her relationship with Sarah on Gordo’s part and because she hadn’t accepted Whiskey’s advances.

Maybe Case would be better off if she wasn’t there.

Andrea took a deep breath and thought about what she should do. Should she stay, should she go, or should she just take a walk and try to get her head on right? After a few moments, she decided she knew what she needed to do. Checking she had her phone, Andrea headed out of the RV, hoping Case would be glad she wasn’t there when he came back from his meeting. Maybe then he could focus on racing and forget about her for the time being.
