Chapter 35 The Pain is Realizing

A marching band seemed to be playing inside of Andrea’s head. She cracked her eyes open and wished there was a way to dim the sun. With a moan, she pulled a pillow over her head, but it didn’t do anything to stop the pounding as the band played on.

She hadn’t drank that much the night before, had she? It hadn’t seemed like it. But then, she hadn’t exactly been counting champagne flutes, either. In desperate need of some aspirin, she pushed the pillow off of her head, dug herself out from beneath the blankets, and went in search of her bag.

The bathroom was down the hall, so once she’d swallowed a couple of pills she hoped would make her head stop pounding, she put on a robe and went out to use the restroom.

She’d only taken a few steps into the hallway when she heard Case’s voice. Once again, his door was cracked open, and he was talking on the phone. From what he was saying, she could only conclude it was Sarah he was speaking to again, and she was unhappy.

Andrea really didn’t want to eavesdrop on him again, but it was hard to walk away and not listen to what he was telling her. He didn’t sound too upset himself, though, which piqued her interest.

“No, Sarah, we aren’t dating, but we did go on a date. I understand that, but you’re not my girlfriend anymore, so you can’t really tell me what to do.”

She took a step closer to the door, hoping he didn’t hear the floorboards creak.

“You’ve got to be kidding me, Sarah. You did? How did you get that done so quickly? No, I do not think it’s a good idea. Not only are you going to drive Andrea crazy, you’ll be miserable yourself. Why can’t you just let this go? No, I understand that you feel like she stole your part. She feels the same way about you. Don’t be ridiculous. No, she didn’t tell me anything. She doesn’t want to talk about it. I don’t think you should either.”

Andrea assumed Sarah had asked him if she’d told him what she’d done to her. A chill ran down her spine. She hadn’t told anyone because the movie company had insisted she sign a nondisclosure after the settlement, but that didn’t prevent her from telling people in her immediate family. That didn’t include Case at this point, but if they were ever to start dating….

Case sighed loudly. “Sarah, I do remember everything you and I have been through. I couldn’t possibly forget that. I do remember how upset you were. I was, too. Sometimes those types of traumatizing events bring people together, but other times, it doesn’t work out that way. You and I both know our relationship wasn’t what either of us wanted. We wouldn’t have even continued to date as long as we did if it wasn’t for—”

The floor creaked again, and Case stopped talking the second it did. Then, as he said, “Hold on a minute,” Andrea darted down the hall toward the bathroom, praying he didn’t see her.

Inside the bathroom, she closed the door and leaned back against it. Whether he saw her or not, she couldn’t say, but she felt horrible for eavesdropping. And yet, she really wanted to know what he was going to say. If it wasn’t for… what?

She wouldn’t find out now, not unless he voluntarily told her, and they weren’t close enough for that sort of a conversation yet. Frustrated and angry at herself for acting so immature and spying on him like a little kid, Andrea went about what she’d come to the restroom to do, thinking it was about time she and Case sat down and had a talk. She would be leaving Seattle to return to California in a few days. Was he planning on coming with her? Could she trust him if he did?

While it did sound like he and Sarah really were split up, the idea that he might’ve known she was listening the whole time and it was all a ruse came to mind. Andrea turned on the shower and then sat down on the edge of the bathtub and held her aching head in her hands. This was all so complicated! Why did she have to meet Case in the first place? And why did he have to be so d*mn cute?

It was time to sit down and hash this all out. They might’ve had a wonderful time the night before, but if it wasn’t real, it needed to end now before someone ended up getting her heart broken.
