Chapter 59
“So… you really like this girl, dontcha?” Charlie asked as he walked along beside Case on their way down the Walk of Fame.
“Yeah, I do. A lot,” Case admitted, a goofy grin on his face.
Charlie chuckled. “Good. She’s a mighty fine gal. And sweet, too. I don’t know what she sees in you,” he teased.
“Me neither.” Case laughed along with him. It was meant to be a joke, but most of the time, he couldn’t see it either. Andrea was gorgeous. She could date anybody. Why would she want to spend her time with him?
“You worried about that actor she’s staring with? From what I hear, she was getting along with him pretty nice in the club the other night.”
“No, I’m not worried about Travis Copper. I know Andrea doesn’t like him like that. He seems to like her. What happened in the club was as much my fault as hers. I pushed her to his arms. But… they were just dancing.”
“Dirty dancing. Speaking of which, look, Patrick Swayze. Now there’s a guy we lost too soon.”
“I agree,” Case said, “about Mr. Swayze. No, I’m sure Andrea doesn’t like Travis. Besides, after the whole mess with Leo, I’m pretty sure she’s not planning on dating any more actors.”
“That guy is an a*s. Who the hell would cheat on Andrea? She’s too d*mn pretty for that sh*t.”
“Too pretty, too sweet, too much of a catch. I agree.” Case shook his head. His phone rang, so he pulled it out of his pocket, hoping it was Andrea. When he saw that it was his mother, he almost didn’t answer but then knew he’d better just do it or she’d never stop calling. “Hello?”
“Case! Where are you, dear?” she said as if he was late for dinner.
“I’m… in Hollywood. With my friend Charlie. Where are you?” He chuckled, expecting her to say the salon or something.
“I’m at the airport, dear. Surprise! Now, come and pick me up.”
Case stopped in his tracks. “You’re… where?”
“Oh, no.” Charlie knew him well enough to know when something bad was going on. He shook his head, his crazy curls dancing everywhere.
“The airport. I came to see you.”
“But… Mom, the apartment I’m housesitting in only has two bedrooms, and Charlie’s sleeping in the other one.”
“Well, then, I’ll stay at a hotel. Come on, now, son. You can’t expect me to spend all day at the airport.”
Shaking his head, he said, “Fine. I’ll be there as soon as I can.” He put his phone in his pocket. “Sorry, man. Our sightseeing is coming to an end.”
“Is she in town?” Charlie sounded as exasperated as Case felt.
“Yep. Surprise.”
“You’re sh*tting me. Who does that?”
“Rhonda Adams Meyer, that’s who.” He turned and headed back to where he’d left his car. “Wanna see the airport again?”
“No, not even a little bit. Tell ya what, I’m gonna see if I can find a cute chick to finish my tour with, and I’ll catch up with you later.”
“I don’t blame you.” Case stopped to pound Charlie’s fist and then headed on toward his car.
He knew his mother was up to something. She wouldn’t show up like that for no reason. Shaking his head and trying to figure it out, he got in his car and headed toward the airport, praying she didn’t end up causing more problems for Andrea. That was the last thing either one of them needed.
About an hour later, after having fought through crazy traffic, Case found a parking spot outside the passenger pick up and sent a text to his mother that he was there. She didn’t respond, so he called her, just as he saw a member of the parking patrol headed his direction. “Mom, where are you?”
“I’m inside one of the establishments having a drink.”
“Well, I’m here. I need you to hurry and come out, or they’re going to make me go park the car.”
“So? Go park the car. I’m going to need you to get all of my bags anyway.”
“All of your bags? How long are you planning on staying?” The officer was standing next to his window now. He rolled it down.
“This zone is for loading and unloading only sir…. Oh, wait! You’re Case Meyer! Wow. I’m such a fan. Never mind. Carry on.”
“Thank you. I’m hurrying, I promise.”
“Take your time,” the officer said with a big smile.
Case nodded appreciatively. He’d missed everything his mother had said, though. “Mom, I’m waiting outside the pickup zone. I can’t come in. Get your luggage and come on. You know I’m only going to be in town a few more days myself, right?”
She muttered something about him being a horrible son and hung up, and Case was glad for the silence. He knew it wouldn’t last.
About thirty minutes later, she came out with enough bags to carry the entire contents of his closet at home. Case got out to help the poor b*stard she’d found to help her. “Thank you,” he said, handing the man some money. He took it and gladly disappeared.
“Well, I had to have some help,” she said with a shrug.
“Mom, I’m not sure all of this will even fit in the car.”
She got in the passenger side, not helping, which was fine. He’d have to manhandle it to get it all in there anyway. Once he’d finished shoving it all inside, except for one bag, which had to go in the back seat, Case got back in, sweating.
“Welcome to California,” he said with an eye roll, and headed off toward home.
