Chapter 80 Pushing Back

The waiting area was actually the back half of the warehouse. In front of her, Andrea saw rows of different backgrounds and sets partitioned off by large curtains, each one with a camera set up in front of it. The drivers started at one end, did several shots in that set, and then moved to the next one. Right now, Gordon was on the first one, which meant Case would be coming out next.

As soon as she stepped into the area, she heard someone further down the row of backdrops shouting her name and immediately laughed. “Heeey, Aaandreaa!!”

Charlie was standing near a giant red and gold throne with a trophy prop in his hands, but he didn’t mind messing up the videographers shoot in order to greet her.

Rather than shouting back at him, she waved, and then a woman who was directing several of the backdrops at the same time came over and refocused him, which served to be a challenge anyway. Of the group of drivers she was currently working with, the other seemed to be taking their tasks quiet seriously whereas Charlie was messing around—which didn’t surprise Andrea.

Several other people were standing back in the waiting area, watching. She recognized a few of them. One was Kevin Holister’s wife. Their son was with her. he couldn’t have been more than four and was watching his dad intently as he moved through the set up. Another was one of the team owners, an older gentleman with graying hair named Richard Peyton, but everyone called him Duck for some reason Andrea didn’t understand. He was chatting with another man Andrea thought could’ve been a crew chief.

Sarah was intently staring at Gordon when Andrea first came over, but out of the corner of her eye, the other actress was watching Andrea as well. Gordo was hamming it up on the set, looking like he was the best racecar driver who ever lived. It made Andrea want to roll her eyes.

When the director gave the word it was time to move on, Case came out onto the first set, the one Gordon had just left. Sarah slid down so she could keep a better eye on her man, but she was watching Case, too. Andrea could feel the other woman’s stare as it penetrated the space between them.

She gave Case a little wave and a reassuring smile, but then she decided it was best not to distract him. She knew he didn’t particularly like any of this stuff, and when the director told him to look more confident, he glanced at Andrea. He didn’t want her to think he was arrogant or cocky. Rather than continue to stand there where she was making him uncomfortable, Andrea decided to slide down to where Charlie was.

Which meant she had to walk past Sarah. “Gee, did you get any makeup on your clothes when you wiped the whole styling station out, sis?”

Andrea did her best to ignore her, but then, Sarah stepped right in front of her, blocking her path. “We’re not on the set anymore, sister dear, so Cam’s not around to threaten me.”

“Move out of the way, Sarah. Stop acting like a child.”

“A child? I’m not the one being a child. You are.”

“Seriously, move.” Andrea tried to go around her, but Sarah wouldn’t move until she decided to fling herself backward onto the concrete floor.

“Ouch!” Sarah shouted, and Andrea could see already exactly where this was going.

Before her half-sister had a chance to make it look like she’d pushed her, Andrea shouted, “Oh no! Sarah slipped! Can someone get the nurse? I hope her ankle’s not twisted. She’s wearing such high heels. Here, honey, let me help you up. Poor dear!” She stretched her hand out but didn’t dare touch Sarah unless she initiated it.

Sarah glared up at her on the floor. “You knocked me down!”

“You fell down?” Andrea said even louder. “I saw that. Are you okay? Do you want a hand up?”

By then the nurse who was on the other side of the stage to help if the drivers needed her was rushing over.

“Be careful, Sarah! That floor is tolerable slick!” Charlie shouted. “I saw you twist your ankle and fall. Sure hope you’re okay!”

“Sarah, be careful on those high heels! You’re always falling on those!” Case added.

Any plans Sarah had for making it look like it was Andrea’s fault had been foiled as the nurse assessed her and declared she was fine. She continued to sit on the floor for a few moments, though, stewing about her missed opportunity.

The director got on to Charlie again, and Andrea hid a smile. She’d have to thank him when he was done. He likely hadn’t even seen what had happened with Sarah and was just taking up for Andrea. He was such a good friend. She really did wish Leslie would come down soon and meet him. She hadn’t even mentioned the driver to her sister yet, but she needed to.

The shooting continued, and Sarah stayed at the other end of the line from Andrea, following Gordon. As long as there were other drivers between them, she hoped they’d be okay, but if Sarah got too close to her, she’d already decided it wasn’t worth it to stand there and wait for her to employ more antics. She’d just follow the other family and friends out and spend some time with Charlie.

Sure enough, as Sarah got closer to her, she could see evil brewing in the other girl’s eyes. Normally, Andrea would stand her ground, but since Case didn’t seem to really want her there anyway, when Charlie was done, Andrea went out the door the others had went through to meet their respective drivers. She’d much rather talk to Charlie than try to guess what horrible thing Sarah would think of next.
