Chapter 145 Tell Me How You Really Feel

There were tons of parties after the awards ceremony. Since she was a winner, Andrea was expected to at least make an appearance at most of them, especially those held by movie studies, producers, and big stars. She didn’t have much of a chance to do anything at each one but say hello to a few people and have a sip or two of a drink before she headed to the next one.

She did have a lot of fun saying hello to friends, other actors and actresses she admired, and lots of people who just wanted to congratulate her. It was all a whirlwind, and by the time she’d gone to her tenth party, she was exhausted and ready to go home. But she still had three or four parties she needed to go to.

“Are you okay?” Case asked her, his arms around her as she went inside the home of a huge actor who’d been nominated and won best actor awards several times.

“I’m fine. Just tired,” Andrea said with a smile. Her face was beginning to ache because she had been smiling so much.

“I’m sorry,” Case said. “Do you just want to skip all of this and go home?”

“No, no, it’s okay. I’ll make it through.” It helped that she had his strong arm to hold onto.

They walked into the main area where the party was being held and said hello to the host and his beautiful wife. Then, Andrea heard a loud, familiar voice out on the patio. Bracing herself, she walked outside, staying to the shadows, Case following behind her, the look on his face saying he wished she would just leave it be.

“I mean… she’s not even that good of an actress,” Sarah was saying. “I have no idea how she won. I wouldn’t have minded losing to someone talented, but her… seriously. It’s a joke. She was probably sleeping with half the academy or something.”

“Come on, Sarah. Don’t be so overly dramatic,” another voice said. Andrea couldn’t see who the woman was, but she appreciated it.

“It’s easy for you to say something like that, Brandy, because you didn’t just lose a major award to a two-faced whore. I’m telling you, she’s gone so far out of her way recently to pretend everything is okay between us. It’s just a ploy so she can use it against me later. I totally know that.”

“I heard she bailed you out of jail,” a man said.

“Yeah, right,” Sarah replied. “I’m sure she wants everyone to hear that.”

“Sarah, you’ll have other award nominations. Try not to be so upset,” Brandy said. Andrea realized it was the actress Brandy Farr who’d lost the Best Actress award to Stella Croy. She didn’t seem nearly as upset as Sarah. But it was also clear that Sarah was drunk.

Case tugged on Andrea’s arm. There was no point standing there listening to Sarah badmouth her. It made tears well up in Andrea’s eyes, though. She thought she’d made some progress with her half-sister, especially after she’d let her into her house so that Stephon could do her makeup.

Reluctantly, Andrea walked with Case back inside, trying not to let her tears fall. “She’s drunk,” Case reminded her. “She might not even realize how awful she’s being. And no one else was sympathetic.”

“I know,” Andrea replied with a shrug. “I just hate that she’s not being real when she says she wants to get along with me. I know I can’t trust her. I thought I could.”

“Thinking you can trust Sarah is a mistake no one should make,” he replied.

He had a point. Andrea took a deep breath, wiped tears off of her cheeks, and went around to say hello to a few more people. She wouldn’t stay at this party any longer than she had to, not with Sarah comfortable on the patio talking bad about her. At least no one else was agreeing with her. That would’ve been worse.

Andrea had worked so hard for this award, and she’d been so proud of herself. Now, Sarah’s remarks tainted that. No, it wasn’t for Best Actress, which had always been Andrea’s dream, but it was the next best thing, and someday, she’d make it all the way to the top. Sarah just had to do her best to knock her down at every turn.

“How miserable of a person must she be to talk that way about anyone,” Case noted as they both sipped glasses of champagne. “If you can’t be happy for your own sister, for the person who’s bailed you out of the last two catastrophes you’ve found yourself in, who can you be happy for?”

“No one but yourself, I guess,” Andrea realized.

“Exactly. And that’s just sad.” Case pulled her close and kissed her, and Andrea decided to let Sarah’s bitterness go. If she wanted to be that way, that was her problem, but Andrea couldn’t let it ruin one of the best nights of her life.
