Chapter 49 Grandma Goes Gaga
Calling his mom was one thing Case didn’t want to do. However, he felt like she needed to know. Sarah was four months along this time, according to the doctors. There was never any guarantee that the pregnancy would last, especially with Sarah’s history. But chance were better this time than last time. He just hated to get his mom’s hopes up again. He knew the reason she’d bonded with Sarah last time was because Rhonda wanted a grandchild so badly.
“Hi, Case, honey. How are you?” Rhonda cooed. “It’s so nice to finally hear from you. I guess that Andrea has been keeping you busy.”
A dig at Andrea two seconds into the phone call. “I have been busy, Mom. I’ve been talking to the team a lot, trying to get ready for Daytona.”
“Well, it’s certainly nice you’re still getting time to pay attention to your work.”
He rolled his eyes and bit his tongue, not about to start a fight with her. “Listen, Mom, something important has happened, and I wanted you to hear it from me before you hear it from some tabloid site.”
“Oh, God, Case! Did you propose to that woman? Please tell me you didn’t!”
“No, Mom. This has nothing to do with Andrea.” He ran a hand across his forehead. Why did she have to jump to conclusions. “It has to do with Sarah.”
“Oh?” Her tone changed completely. “Are the two of you seeing each other again? Wouldn’t that be a dream come true!”
“No, we’re not seeing each other. But I did run into her today, and she gave me some news, Mom. She’s pregnant again. And she says it’s mine.”
The squeal on the other end of the phone had him holding his at arm’s length away from his ear. He should’ve been prepared, but he wasn’t. “That’s the best news I’ve ever heard!”
“Yah, but listen, Mom, I’m going to ask her to get a paternity test. I don’t think it’s a good idea for us to get too excited over this. There’s always a possibility it’s not mine. Or… nothing’s guaranteed, Mom.” He stopped himself short of reminding her that Sarah could end up losing the baby again.
Rhonda was already beyond all of that. “I cannot wait! We’ll have the most beautiful baby shower ever! We can even do one of those trendy baby reveals!”
“Mom….”
“Have you told your sister yet?”
“No. You can tell Shayna and Edward, but Mom, don’t be telling everyone else. Not yet. We need to make sure of a few things first.”
“Okay, okay. I won’t say anything, but you know how it almost killed me last time.”
Her choice of words could’ve been better. Case feel a sharp pain in his heart, remembering how it had felt to see Sarah sitting on the toilet, bleeding, knowing everything was lost. “I’ve gotta go, Mom.” He didn’t really—but he didn’t want to talk to her anymore. Now, there was absolutely no way his mother was ever going to give Andrea a chance. Not that he should necessarily even be worried about that anymore. She probably wouldn’t want to have anything else to do with him.
“All right, honey. Thank you for telling me. And congratulations! I’m so happy!”
“Love you, Mom. Bye.” He hung up, knowing she’d go on and on if he didn’t.
Case stared at his phone. He’d called his lawyer earlier to get some council. He had no intention of marrying Sarah. He’d done everything he could to make it work last time, once he found out she was pregnant, and once he found out she’d lost the baby. That had been the rumor Andrea had heard about, he was sure—that he’d broken up with Sarah because she lost the baby. But that wasn’t the truth. The only reason he’d even tried to stay with her in the first place had been because of the baby. He couldn’t do that again.
But he also couldn’t expect Andrea to stay with him under the circumstances. Maybe if they’d been further along in their relationship, she would want to. He wasn’t banking on that now.
His lawyer had suggested he ask Sarah to get a paternity test from a third party doctor in order to make sure the results were honest. He should go with her and monitor everything himself. It sounded like a good idea With a deep sigh, Case dialed Sarah’s number.
